I heard it on XRT (we have no radio here, and for reasons I don't know Sirius has been blocked on my office computer) and I had the same thought, quite underwhelming.

Yeah...I had a similar response to Vertigo, and that album ended up being one of my faves, so I'm hoping the same thing happens with this one, but I'm not counting on it...

I'll weigh in as a card carrying member of the U2 ALS. I'm not a good writer, so bear with me.

1. GOYB. It's not great. It's not bad. I almost always think that if people didn't know
it was U2, they'd like it. There seems to be a preconceived prejudice about
the band that I don't quite understand. It does have some obvious 'Pump It Up' in it, but I love EC, so I don't care.

2. I also think that U2 aren't that concerned with the 1st single being all that great anymore.
They're gonna sell records, and they're gonna sell tickets. Built in audience.
Just like I thought 'Vertigo' was a fun throwaway track, GOYB fills the same void.

3. 'Beautiful Day' was an outstanding 1st single on an otherwise mediocre effort (ATYCLB), but for 'Walk On' and 'New York'.
'Vertigo' should have been a b-side on 'HTDAAB', 'City of Blinding Lights' could've been their next 'WTSHNN' but it was released after 'Vertigo'
and 'all because of you'. I think the singles should've been 'COBL', 'Vertigo', and then 'Crumbs from your table'.
They don't care.

4. Just wait for 'Unknown Caller'....... all I'm gonna say.

5. 'So Cruel'
4. 'Do you feel Loved'
3. 'A SortofHomecoming'
2. 'Acrobat'

ETA: no one liked "The Fly" at first either.

Honest question... do you think that One Tree Hill and Red Hill Mining Town as underrated? I loved those two and they seemed the less popular ones on Joshua Tree.

My all time favorite remains I will follow, closely followed with BAD (I know that is kinda popular, but I have no apologies on that one).

shirtless driver, how could you leave "Drowning Man" off? Or do more people love that song than I thought?

great fucking song.

U2 is one of those real peak and valley band in my opinion. When they are good, they are great, but you have to sift through a lot of weird shit to get to the good stuff.

U2 has, for the most part, always kinda sucked.
That is just my opinion. So don't all of you ALS'ers descend upon me like a bunch buzzards on a fresh carrion.

OK, I'll bite, lets have a list of "Mr. Reason" favorites.

Englebert Humperdink?
Neil Sedaka?

Pat Boone?

Oh kiss my ass. What do those four have to do with the discussion at hand?
You already know one of my favorites, Phillip.

Nothing on Achtung or Joshua can be considered unpopular

Perhaps I should've rephrased my list as "10 Best U2 songs that aren't as popular as One".

Not to pick nits Bryan, but according to U2.com, the only singles released from War were NYD and Two Hearts Beat As One.
SBS and "40" were released as singles in Germany according to Wiki.
As far as "...Homecoming", fine. Not in same popularity ballpark as Pride, Bad, or the title track off that album. That's why I mentioned it.
Anything from AB or TJT is obviously popular, because those might be two best selling U2 albums in their discography.
I mentioned So Cruel, because it's a great song, but not a single - and I don't think Acrobat has ever been performed live.
:)

I'll give you the mid-'90s as being kinda sucky for U2, because I don't like Zooropa or Pop (I like Passengers quite a bit, though) but War is the album we should all be able to agree on. That or Boy. You may not like Brian Eno in the driver's seat, and I'll respect that (even though I think Eno is one of the most important figures in 20th c. music), but what's not to love about angry percussive post-punk?

Agreed. Acthung Baby is a classic but I've never ben able to tell if Joshua Tree is a masterpeice or a pile of steaming, weepy, pretentious crap.

It's frontloaded as hell is what it is. The first three songs are amazing, of course, but people rarely carry that passion over through the rest of the album. There's a reason: it's not as good. I mean, "Bullet the Blue Sky" is pretty good, and "In God's Country" and "One Tree Hill" are good too, and I like "Exit," but it's not an album that captivates you from beginning to end like War or even Achtung Baby (which sags in the middle but closes out strong). It's regarded as a classic on the wings of the first three songs. That's all.
