I don't know if you all realize that we are 20 years removed from one of the most productive years in recent film history. Or maybe it's just me, being overtly sentimental because it was the first time in my life I was allowed out into theatres *without* the parents, if the movie was PG-13 or less. But 1989 was a great year, and I am going to list a SHITLOAD of them. So be warned.

THIS IS A LONG POST.

The Abyss - One of James Cameron's underappreciated underwater masterpieces. "NOW FIGHT! FIIIGHHT!"

All Dogs Go To Heaven - Aw. I still remember seeing this one in the theatre. Don Bluth was *the man*.

Always - One of the sadder stories of Hollywood screenwriting. The original writer, Diane Thomas (who wrote "Romancing the Stone"), died in a car accident before the film was being produced. Her draft was barely used.

Batman - Come on. This was *20 years* ago? I still remember opening night! And batman candy! And those wonderful toys! WAAH!!!

Best of the Best - Eric Roberts FEST! James Earl Jones, too!

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure - Remember when we *liked* Keanu?

Black Rain - bad ass!

Born on the Fourth of July - Remember when we *liked* Tom Cruise? Easily one of his best, easily one of Stone's best.

The 'Burbs - Remember when we li--ok I'll stop. This is my 3rd favorite Joe Dante film, behind "Piranha" and "Gremlins".

Cameron's Closet - Why am I listing this movie? It sucked. But it was good times...

Casualties of War - Marty McFly gets a taste of The Shit.

Cinema Paradiso - First "Best Foreign Language" film I remember. But I barely do. Can't believe we watched this in class...but it was good.

The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover - My first introduction to a bawdy black comedy, and I don't regret it!

Cousins - Holy shit. That movie came out that year. With Ted Danson. And our guy, Bill Peterson. Can't remember anything else from it. Probably for the better.

Crimes and Misdemeanors - Arguably Woody's best film, and my personal favorite.

Cyborg - It's Van Damme important!

Dead Calm - The beginning of my love affair with Nicole Kidman and...Billy...Zane...?

Dead Poets Society - Did it suck like Roger Ebert said? Nah. Did it rule like all the soccer moms said it did? No. It's "A Separate Peace": The Movie. Because the real "A Separate Peace: The Movie" *sucked*.

Dream a Little Dream - Though they starred in a few other (shitty) movies together after this, I still call this the Swan Song of the Two Cories. Haim's next great picture: "Prayer of the Roller Boys"!!

Do the Right Thing - Okay, I have to...Remember when we *liked* Spike Lee? Hey, this was a good movie for its time. Try watching it now and not vomiting, though. Little hard.

The Dream Team - One Flew Over the Keaton's Nest. I remember renting this movie, and loving it. I was 10. Give me a break.

Driving Miss Daisy - We won't go there.

Drugstore Cowboy - One of Van Sant's best, and his breakthrough film.

Fat Man and Little Boy - Another movie I saw on HB0 some time later. Bored the shit out of me back then. Never gave it another chance.

Field of Dreams - Ah yes, the starry eyed baseball "Gone With the Wind". Want to make love to baseball? Here is your cum recepticle.

Gleaming the Cube - "Hackers" was to hackers as this was to skateboarders. In other words if you weren't one, this was a badass movie. But you can't beat Christian Slater and his asshole hairdo, and the pool skateboarding scene!

Glory - I held a record that night for longest balling spectacle. I think I cried literally 30 minutes straight, starting from the moment Shaw was killed. At that age, I didn't think the Union lost any battles. I didn't really get this movie until I was older, but I've always loved it. Denzel's finest performance, and his finest character, IMO. Yes, I know he was Malcolm X.

Great Balls of Fire! - Probably Dennis Quaid's best shot at an Oscar. And that's saying...what, exactly...

Gross Anatomy - The blueprint for "Scrubs"?

Heathers - Winona Ryder and Christian Slater were busy that year. This is hands down a classic teenage black comedy. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

Henry V - One of the best Shakespeare plays, and one of the best adaptations, if not *the* best. Say what you want about Kenneth Branagh, the guy knows his Shakespeare.

Her Alibi - Another forgettable movie, and yet I remember it.

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids - I went to see this with a few families, and it was one of the best theatre experiences I've had. Makes me want to be a kid again...and shrink myself into a bowl of Cheerios.

How I Got Into College - Really bad teenage comedy but some funny bits. Good thing Hollywood realized that these types of movies don't make money, because we certainly don't get these kind of raunchy college comedies anymore, right?

How to Get Ahead in Advertising - Boy did I wish I understood how brilliant this film was when it came out. Richard E. Grant, I later learned, is awesome. If you have never heard of this film or seen it, FIND IT and SEE IT.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - And I do mean...the *last* Crusade. They never made another one of these movies...NEVER.

Jacknife - Want to see a pretty good Robert De Niro movie you've never heard of? Here you go!

The January Man - OK I didn't see this in 1989 but I saw it a few years later when my parents let me. And I laughed a lot.

K-9 - Everybody's favorite Chicagoan in a shitty dog-buddy movie! Who wants popcorn?

Kickboxer - Van Dammnation!

Lean on Me - Morgan Freeman didn't have to do nothin but stay black and die--and this movie. Marginal script empowered by Freeman totally owning.

Licence to Kill - Bond. James Bond. Kicked. Ass.

Listen to Me - Hah! Kirk Cameron, you SUCK!!

The Little Mermaid - Oh Jesus...I had to put up with an entire summer of my sisters watching this *every* *day* when it came out on VHS. Yes. I do know a lot of these songs by heart. Eff you.

Look Who's Talking - John Travolta's *first* come back. "Pulp Fiction" would be his second. Saw this in the theatre with my best friend. We both agreed. 2 thumbs up.

Major League - Hey, who woulda thought *2* greatest baseball movies of all time would be in the same year? WILD THING!!!

Meet the Feebles - An early Peter Jackson film. See it on drugs, and suffer the consequences. But it's damn funny if you look at it the right way. Very messed up.

My Left Foot - Three words. Daniel Day-Lewis.

My Mom's A Werewolf - This movie was all kinds of horrible, but I liked it back then.

New York Stories - Only liked Allen's movie. Most of this movie annoyed the crap out of me.

No Holds Barred - Hulk Hogan's best film. Take that for what it's worth.

Parenthood - One of the best "ensemble" comedy/dramas ever. Possibly my favorite Ron Howard film. Never get sick of watching this movie.

Pet Sematary - Has some of the scariest images ever on film. Deserved a better ending. Still remains the only movie my friend's brother, who was a total headbanger, had to walk out of because he was so scared. What a wuss.

The Punisher - The perfect Punisher (Dolph). Needed a better script.

Roger & Me - Remember when we *didn't know* Michael Moore? Well, say what you want, this is his best film by far. I still watch it from time to time. Too bad it never got better for Flint.

Say Anything - A chick flick and an 80's nostalgia movie all in one. One of my sister's personal favorites...which means I hate it. No, it's actually good. I like Cameron Crowe.

sex, lies, and videotape - James Spader was such a bad ass in this movie. One of my favorite Film Characters: Graham Dalton.

Steel Magnolias - Ultimate chick flick. But DAMN good.

Teen Witch - Top that!

Turner & Hooch - Another dumbass dog-buddy piece of shit. Actually, that's a little rough. This one at least had Tom Hanks.

UHF - Uncle Nutzy's Clubhouse!

Uncle Buck - John Candy's finest *starring* role. Too bad he couldn't have more like this. This movie simply rules.

Weekend at Bernie's - Pretty sad when a dead guy steals the show, but that's just what Bernie Lomax did in this very lame comedy starring Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman as total d-bags you could care less about.

When Harry Met Sally... - Another one of Rob Reiner's gems, thanks to Nora Ephron's brilliant script and Crystal and Meg Ryan were fantastic.

The Wizard - Hey. We all know it. We all saw it. We all wanted to play "Super Mario Bros. 3". We all wanted to go to California. And last but not least...we all...loved...the power glove. Everybody now...

THINK THIS POST WASN'T LONG ENOUGH? I hear ya. Don't worry, guys, there's more. We've got...THE SEQUELS!

THE SEQUELS OF 1989

Back to the Future Part II - Easily the most convoluted and complicated, least funny, but most ambitious of the trilogy.

C.H.U.D. II: Bud the C.H.U.D. - Saw this for the first time on an edition of "Up All Night". If you love trashy 80's horror flicks, this is another to throw on the pile.

Fletch Lives - Can Fletch die now?

The Fly II - The ending of this movie is truly a remarkable special effects extravaganza. The rest of the movie was garbage.

Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan - Welcome to New York, Jason! Talk about east coast bias, why don't you ever come to Chicago, or Cleveland?

Ghostbusters II - OK, so critically this movie stunk up the place. And for the most part, "Ghostbusters" fans hated it. *I* liked it. Yeah I was 10, yeah it was probably geared toward me, and seeing it now just takes me back to being a kid. So what. Enough with the hate.

Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers - This movie is Totally 80's Slasher Flick tasty! The kills aren't as good, but at least there's a nice thick storyline to keep you interested!

The Karate Kid, Part III - Yeah, this was necessary! Well, if nothing else, it features one of the most hilarious badass villains that even the Angry Nintendo Nerd had to give props to. "Make his knuckles bleed!"

Lethal Weapon 2 - Kicked even more ass than the original.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation - Still remember seeing this in the theatre, and now it's a holiday classic! Shame that it was the last relevant "Vacation" movie, but in some ways it was the best one.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child - I don't remember one minute of this film, and it's probably better that I didn't. The Dream Child?!?

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier - Why do I hate this movie? Because it is there. It had a nice concept. But Shatner had no idea how to pace a film. Row row row your boat? REALLY?

The Toxic Avenger Part II - Hey it's another Toxic Avenger movie!

The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie - Hey it's another Toxic Avenger movie! Two in one year!?

The War of the Roses - Pretty psychotic and over the top, but hey...it had some nice moments.

So there you have it! Stir any memories! Pissed off that you just wasted all that time, and I just wasted all that bandwidth?

Well forGIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEE MEEEEEEEEEEE! (to be referenced again in the 1991 movies 20th anniversary thread).

You dropped the ball on that one.

I also liked Skin Deep and Hear No Evil, See No Evil but I might be the only one.

I remember seeing Lethal Weapon 2 on a double date. The guy I was with was a sloppy kisser and the guy my friend was with had a mullet. I became really good friends with the guy with the mullet. He is kind of a loser now but funny to think back.

Lots of good memories from this list. First movie I saw at a drive in was Batman. First time I saw a sperm fertilize an egg was Look Who's Talking. Loved Uncle Buck. Loved Back to the Future II (MARTY!).

Not to be a downer but that seems like a long list of not very good movies, maybe 5 or 6 good ones, and a list of crappy sequels. Indiana Jones should be in the sequels list, by the way.

But, I understand, that was "your year" and maybe I'm missing something.

Besides, I was busy that year perfecting my "Lou-do" and following the journeys of Kenny Battle, Marcus Liberty, Lowell Hamilton, Les Lancaster, Shawon Dunston, and Jerome Walton for most of that year.

BAD, FORMULAIC, OR GENERALLY NOT MEMORABLE (or OTHER)

Always - sappy
Best of the Best - eh.
Black Rain - had to look it up to see if I had seen it. I had. Not memorable.
The 'Burbs - garbage. Saw it once had no interest in reviewing. And Tom Hanks is one of my favorite actors.
Cameron's Closet - never heard of it.
Casualties of War - half a dozen movies at that time like it that were better. Great cast though.
Cinema Paradiso - Zack is artsier than me.
The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover - I had forgotten about this movie completely...and was happy about that.
Cousins - horrible.
Crimes and Misdemeanors - I hate Woody Allen movies.
Cyborg - It's Van Damme...OK...maybe when I'm in the right mood, but...
Dead Calm - Come on, really?
Dream a Little Dream - Was Nicole Eggert in it? Then, it could possibly be saved.
Do the Right Thing - was OK but not a big fan.
The Dream Team - Awful. He really gave up Batman later to do this crap?
Fat Man and Little Boy - I actually thought this was an HBO movie. Didn't realize it was in the theatre. It was OK.
Gleaming the Cube - not my scene but I love to just drop the phrase "Gleaming the Cube" on people just for fun at inappropriate times.
Great Balls of Fire! - generic, fomulaic music biopic.
Gross Anatomy - I don't think I ever saw and I watched everything back then so it must suck.
Heathers - I never got why people liked this movie.
Her Alibi - Another forgettable movie, and yet I remember it. --Then you are doing better than me.
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids - kid movie that I wasn't into at that time.
How I Got Into College - don't think I ever saw it but sounds bad.
K-9 - horrible
Kickboxer - see earlier Van Damme comment
Licence to Kill - Dalton
Listen to Me - Hah! Kirk Cameron, you SUCK!! Agree.
The Little Mermaid - Oh Jesus...agree
Look Who's Talking - Ugh.
Meet the Feebles - An early Peter Jackson film. See it on drugs, and suffer the consequences If I have to be on drugs to enjoy something, I'll come to this board.
My Mom's A Werewolf - This movie was all kinds of horrible, I'll take your word for it
New York Stories - see above.
No Holds Barred - Hulk Hogan's best film. Well then....
The Punisher -
sex, lies, and videotape - I was fired up to see this since I loved Andie McDowell and figured there'd be lots of nudity, sex, and lies. They were lying about the sex and videotapes. But, I guess the movie was good. I'm just bitter.
Teen Witch - Top that! Is that a threat?
Turner & Hooch - horrible, and again, Dan Hampton, I like Tom Hanks.
UHF - ugh
Uncle Buck - I actually don't like this either but I'll concede to popular opinion that it is good.
Weekend at Bernie's - I don't like it but the premise is so classic.
The Wizard - never heard of it

THE SEQUELS OF 1989

Back to the Future Part II - bad
C.H.U.D. II: Bud the C.H.U.D. - ?
Fletch Lives - bad
The Fly II - bad
Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan - Is this the one where he has to win the disco contest?
Ghostbusters II - despicable
Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers - Schwing.
The Karate Kid, Part III - bad
A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child -
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier - Worst of the original cast movies (AND THAT INCLUDES THE FIRST MOVIE!)
The Toxic Avenger Part II - what?
The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie - I said what?
The War of the Roses - I don't think this is a technical sequel but not my thing, not horrible though

Was that 15?

BAD, FORMULAIC, OR GENERALLY NOT MEMORABLE (or OTHER)

Always - sappy
Best of the Best - eh. ()

The 'Burbs - garbage. Saw it once had no interest in reviewing. And Tom Hanks is one of my favorite actors. WOW
Gleaming the Cube - not my scene but I love to just drop the phrase "Gleaming the Cube" on people just for fun at inappropriate times. I do this as wellHeathers - I never got why people liked this movie. Cuz teen suicide is interestingUHF - ugh Best Weird al movie...ever
Uncle Buck - I actually don't like this either but I'll concede to popular opinion that it is good. If you got a problem with Uncle Buck...you got a problem with yourself

THE SEQUELS OF 1989

Back to the Future Part II - bad What?
Ghostbusters II - despicable (despicable in a good way)The Karate Kid, Part III - bad Would you fuck with Mike Barnes (soap star)

Was that 15?

No not 15 of the ones I commented on but i digest

Back to the Future, parts 2 and 3 were a travesty beyond Crystal Skull proportions.

Back to the Future was a great, fun film. Hell, I just watched it again 2 weeks ago for the first time in 15 years probably. And it's great.

Part 2 was a bad setup for an even worse part 3 movie. They should have left it at 1.

I was interested in part 2 because of the way they changed the town from movie to movie and also the second foray into the 1950's and how they tried to seam part 1 and 2 together.
Part 3 was a complete travesty, agreed. But it was so bad it likely killed off any other sequel...

Dr., I am going to have to debate you on this one...

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective - hilarity
Angels in the Outfield - campy, but very popular
Clear and Present Danger - Im not a Clancy fan, but eh.
Clerks, directed by Kevin Smith - Hello? Out of the park!
The Client, starring Susan Sarandon, Tommy Lee Jones - great movie
The Crow - still a classic for the goth gang
Dumb and Dumber - 15 years later still funny, stands the test of time.
Ed Wood, starring Johnny Depp as Ed Wood - Burton and Wood = success
Forrest Gump - Need I say more
Four Weddings and a Funeral - another good one bit of a chic flick.
Hoop Dreams classic story of two intercity kids trying to get out.
Interview with the Vampire: Pitt and Cruise = bucks.
Legends of the Fall - classic
The Lion King - another classic
The Mask - who didn't say "smokin" for the next two years?
Muriel's Wedding - gay and chicky, but very popular
Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult - Nielsen? cmon.
Natural Born Killers - dark and awesom
Nell - Jodie Foster as a retard? Classic
Pulp Fiction - Of course you know my feelings on this.
Quiz Show
The River Wild, starring Meryl Streep, Kevin Bacon and David Strathairn
[b]The Shawshank Redemption - tops many mens' best movie lists.
Speed - extremely popular.

So, I have to say your 1982 while good, not as good - JMHO

I find it impossible to believe that anyone has ever found a Kevin Smith movie to be funny. I refuse to accept that.

Dave, your list has some good movies but mine has far more movies that have woven their way into the fabric of American Life.

Blade Runner
Conan the Barbarian, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
Fast Times at Ridgemont High,
First Blood, starring Sylvester Stallone
An Officer and a Gentleman,
Poltergeist,
Porky's
Rocky III
Sophie's Choice,
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Tootsie,

I submit that even if people have not seen or do not like these movies, they are familiar with them. Of your list, I would say only -

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective - hilarity
Forrest Gump - Need I say more
The Lion King - another classic
Pulp Fiction - Of course you know my feelings on this.
The Shawshank Redemption - tops many mens' best movie lists.
Speed - extremely popular.

-would qualify in the same way. And I think I'm being kind on Ace and maybe Speed.
