Dave, your list has some good movies but mine has far more movies that have woven their way into the fabric of American Life.

Blade Runner
Conan the Barbarian, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
Fast Times at Ridgemont High,
First Blood, starring Sylvester Stallone
An Officer and a Gentleman,
Poltergeist,
Porky's
Rocky III
Sophie's Choice,
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Tootsie,

I submit that even if people have not seen or do not like these movies, they are familiar with them. Of your list, I would say only -

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective - hilarity
Forrest Gump - Need I say more
The Lion King - another classic
Pulp Fiction - Of course you know my feelings on this.
The Shawshank Redemption - tops many mens' best movie lists.
Speed - extremely popular.

-would qualify in the same way. And I think I'm being kind on Ace and maybe Speed.

I find it impossible to believe that anyone has ever found a Kevin Smith movie to be funny. I refuse to accept that.

No one ever has any thoughts on the Chet Coppock based character...ive mentioned it on this board twice with no replies...interesting to me at least

guess the board is anti chet

for the record I think Chet is great and since MJH died...his weekend shows are my favorite thing on ESPN

I used to listen to Chet in 1982 when the movie industry was thriving. He was great doing late nights on 'MAQ.

By 1989, the quality of the product had declined somewhat like the movie industry.

We will have to agree to disagree Dr. Ken. However, I would implore you to add two more "American Fabric" weaving movies to my list - "Legends of the Fall" and "Clerks", despite what some people think of Kevin Smith. I would take exception with only two on your list - Wrath of Khan and Conan - I personally don't remember anything about Wrath of Khan other than Ricardo Montalban with a really really bad long haired wig and him slamming his hand down and screaming something. Conan was a gawd awful watch - what was that black chic's name? The crazy one? Anyway, awful awful movie. Meaningful and in American Fabric? Not sure about that.

That's more than I, and I suspect more than half of America, remember from Clerks or Legends of the Fall.

Conan was horrible. I don't mean to say it is good. But, if you mention the name Conan or show someone a picture of AHHHNOLD dressed as Conan, people would know what that is.

I thought Clerk's had some pretty funny scenes, but Kevin Smith is terribly overrated, imo.

Irish boy, you are in the minority.
Go to his web site. I am a card carrying fan of Mr Smith not just for his filmaking but have you seen his wife??

Here we go
Clerks brilliant
Mallrats grows on you goog not great
Chasing Amy- Irish boy see it you will laugh
Dogman- as a reformed Roman Chatolic I found it way too funny.
Jersey girl- not as bad as everyone said
Jay and Sielent Bob strike back- if you do not laugh then you need to be taken out and shot,it is basically a Stooges film with Dick and Fart jokes
Clerks 2 nice wrap up some funny but nothing fall out of your seat

Irish I think you may not like them because you over think them and/or do not get the in jokes. You need to remember he makes movies for people like him....Geeks and Nerds

What does his wife have to do with him making funny or unfunny movies?

So if I don't laugh at a Stooges film filled with dick and fart jokes, I will be shot?

I'm glad I missed this film.

I like his movies cuze the seem real , like just people talking. Come on 47 did not make you laugh? What are you some fracking humorless drone like a lawyer...ohh wait sorry.

Chas - I agree. Dogma was great and the not so subtle shots at the Roman Catholic church were funny. Jersey Girl was my daughter's favorite film for years. But I am partial to anything with Liv Tyler in it. Clerks 2 DID have some fall out of seat laughable moments in it - the jail scene and the donkey show come to mind immediately. Plus Rosario Dawson is also very hot.

Totally if you want to see one of the funniest things ever cut from a movie get The Chasing Amy DVD and watch the first one of The comic shop with Fanboy and Steve Dave. I almost pissed my pants

jesus, doc, i offer you a challenge and you give me *1982*? i thought at least you'd give me 1939; not only considered the best year of film by many film buffs, but it's right around when you were an adolescent so i thought for sure you'd mention it.

1990 actually may have been an even better year than 1989, thinking about it...i mean we got two of the best movies from two of the better directors of our generation in barry levinson ("avalon") and martin scorcesse ("goodfellas").

to clarify on kevin smith: his main audience is *fanboy* comic book geeks and nerds. and even a lot of them find him insufferable. he did absolutely nothing with his favorite format. but he does know how to make a pretty good film. he's done it thrice: "clerks", "chasing amy", and "zack & miri".

don't talk to me about "dogma".

What's funny is I was actually going to go with 1939 but I've been very "old coot-ish" of late on the board so I thought I should pick something within the lifetime of most people here.

And I still failed.

I will not and will not argue as I said he is an acquired taste, so you do not like him fine. I will though say I find your opinion not valid as you actually liked Avalon.

i stand by the facepalm. not really sure with what knowing how good "avalon" is as a movie is in connection to being homosexual.
