I admit that I've never been a huge Star Trek fan. Frankly I watched it as a kid and I think the first episode was that one where they land on the gangster planet. Since then I've never found the universe created by Gene Roddenberry that compelling. But I love good sci-fi, so I've given the series another chance time and time again, only to be disappointed (save Kahn) once more.

So I'm sitting in the movie theater watching this new Star Trek movie preview. I REALLY want to like this because frankly I've been generally pleased with the career of J.J. Abrams, but found that he couldn't finish a story properly. That was clear in Alias and is clear in Lost (and one of the main reasons probably why he is less involved in the series now). Like many of Abrams stuff, he can certainly make it look good and hopefully breathe life into this otherwise dead franchise (or at least dead in terms of the youngsters... aka the next generation of sci-fi geeks).

So back to the preview. In the trailer Kirk as a kid is outrunning the cop and drives the Classic Corvette (BTW, is this the way we're supposed to know he's cool? Does he play the saxophone, too?) off of a cliff, jumping out at the last minute and barely saving himself from certain death. He's a rebel. He plays by his own rules. He knows things you and I couldn't know. Things we shouldn't know. But he doesn't know how to drive a stickshift. He doesn't even know what a clutch is. Spock had to tell him.

I sure hope the plot is better than teenage versions of the Trek crew. Is this how they plan to re-connect to the sci-fi youth? Hot teenage Uhura maybe (could the skirt get any higher?)? Good luck J.J., you got your work cut out for you.

So he drives off the cliff in first gear?!?

Not auspicious start.

Still I'd rather reboot Kirk than Picard

I think this movie will be the suck.

Wouldn't consider myself a Trekkie, but know enough of the franchise to hate Rick Berman.

As for this film, stop with the backstory stuff! From what I can tell of the Eric Bana character, wait for it, wait for it...
he's a time traveller.

I am a Trekker and huge fan ofthe universe that Roddenbury created. I think if you are even a half way fan and nolidgeable about the History of TOS you will be in fits. He is doing stuff to the canon that will make me scream but if he can pull it off story wise and do a good reboot then fine . I do not think he will be able to do it. I feel in for a let down.

I'll check it out with an open mind. Didn't have high hopes for the Battlestar Galactica "re-imagining" and it's the best show on TV. As someone who watched the original Transformers movie multiple times at the North Riverside theater I didn't have high hopes for the remake, but while I wouldn't say the new one was a good movie, it was still entertaining. Have higher hopes for this than the GI Joe movie though.

A few of the guys who did MST3K put out mp3's that you buy and play over movies so it works just like the old TV show.
