I'm telling you all right now:

These jokers are not going to finish higher than 3rd this season.
Remember this post when I bump it again in September.

is this really a surprise? he is totally out-playing miles this spring, and fontenots 2nd base defense is at least equal to what we saw from derosa. i just cant wait to be reminded after EVERY double play that he and theriot are the "cajun connection".

Fontenot will do fine at second. These jokers will finish higher than third, RW, but will likely get swept out of the first round again. Naw, CUBBIES ALL THE WAAAAAY! YAAAAAAAAAY!

If they do finish no higher than 3rd, it will have nothing to with with Fontenot at 2nd.

LMAO finishing 3rd in the division because of Fontenot. If that happens it will be because of injuries to the pitching staff.

Hey, I never said it was (just) because of Fontenot. I don't like ANY of the moves they made this spring, and I will be vindicated in September like it or not!

So there!

i think fontenot starting at 2nd is an upgrade from derosa. i think the outfield, barring the inevitable injury to bradley is improved from last year. i think the bullpen is deeper than last year. they need another lefty arm though. i dont think they are remarkably better, but i do like the balance in the lineup a lot more. the starting rotation looks stronger than last year to me, although i am not counting on dempster to deliver as big a year. i like having harden start the season with the cubs though.

i dont think the moves were earth-shattering improvements, but i think the team is at least as good as last year. it is all about injuries though. i feel that this team is dangerously fragile and thin in some important areas. last year they were pretty healthy. can they do it again this year?

To finish no higher than 3rd they'd have to win less than 75 games because nobody else in the central will. Highly unlikely.

RW I do have concerns but the other teams in our division would have problems finishing ahead of a team of the CSFMB all stars.

Well I hate to disagree with ya, but I do not think this team's downfall will be in September, but once again in October.

If Mike Fontenot was a better player then Mark DeRosa, why did Lou Pinella not put him in ahead of DeRosa? Please explain that for me? Fontenot has not even played a full season yet. Unfortunately, DeRosa had to go for money reasons, not because of his playing abilities. Lou believes he needs a solid lefty to break up the lineup a bit. From the evidence of last year's playoffs, he may be right.

Cubs will make the playoffs, but likely go down again early; then again, who knows.

i believe fontenot is an upgrade at the position of 2nd base in my opinion, not necessarily at the plate. derosa was not a good 2nd baseman. thats all. i think fontenot does have an upside at the plate, but im not declaring him a better hitter than derosa right now.

i wasnt glad to see derosa go, but i definitely in belief that last year was a career year. i don't think it is that big of a deal that he is going. the cubs have a decent group of outfielders, a decent setup at short and 2nd. the only real problem they havent addressed is backing up 3rd. if ramirez goes down, this team is really fucked. derosa AND cedeno were valuable in that regard, they both could play third in a pinch. if ram goes down now, that is a big issue. we will see what koskie can do. the question is, if koskie makes the team, who gets left off? in that regard, derosa was quite valuable.

Koskie hasn't played in over 2 years so he won't be making the team. German played second yesterday and third today and will probably make the team because they are obviously looking for a backup third baseman. Who do they bump? I've been wondering that for a month. Hendry said they are keeping 12 pitchers (you may have missed it between Murph's slurping noises) so that means it's either Hasselhoff or Gathright. I'm guessing Hasselhoff gets sent down and will be recalled when Bradley/Soriano/Ramirez gets hurt.

I hope that you all prove me wrong...I really do...but I am not optimistic about this team.

A 75 win, 3rd place season would not surprise me with the Cubs.

But neither would another 90+ win season, and a 3rd straight Central title.

i agree. they are not good enough to assume they are going to have a 90-win season, but it seems very possible. i really think the cubs are a key injury or 2 away from disaster in the lineup. the starting pitching i think could survive a key injury, but not the lineup. i think it is good, just not deep at some key places.

Ah pick a lane. What's it gonna be the 75 win season or the 90 win season? That's a HUGE disparity. Pick one.

Way to go out on a limb.

I don't think they will do well this regular season. I don't see the playoffs at the end of the regular season for the Cubs. Sub .500 record with a host of injuries.

they do have the benefit of having a weak division, which keeps me feeling pretty good that they will win the division. there are a couple teams that could challenge if everything lined up well for them. i could see the cubs in 2nd, i just cant see them finishing 3rd or lower just due to the depth of starting pitching, and barring injury calamity. you just never know until they start paying for real though.

Well, we all know that's the one you fervently hope for.
Would you be further entertained by the notion that I think the Sox will win 90+ and be the division winner?
Further evidence that God is NOT a Cubs fan....

I think the Cubs will win 83 games, and the Sox 86-- Neither make the playoffs. Now, those win totals may change at the end of spring training, but thats what I think right now.

Mike Fontenot is a better fielder than DeRosa at 2nd base. He will likely hit as well also. If you extrapolate his numbers from last season, over a full season, he would be a huge star. Whether or not his numbers remain outstanding playing every day, is the big question. The greatest loss where DeRosa is concerned is his versatility. He provided very solid protection at 3rd, 1st, as well as the corner outfield spots, as well as playing regularly at 2nd. But as an everyday 2nd baseman, DeRosa was just an average fielder. I'm just glad it will be Fontenot at 2nd as I predicted and not Miles, who has no power and is not as good a fielder. For the idiots predicting 3rd place finishes and 83 win season, you will look VERY foolish. Even more than you already may, when the Cubs repeat as N.L. Central champions. The starting pitching with Zambrano, Dempster, Harden, Lilly and Marshall, will carry the Cubs to another division. With guys like Soriano, Ramirez, Theriot, Bradley and of course Hoffpauir...they will be fine.
