I appreciate everyone's concern with my career decision. As you know I've decided to take a hosting position at the new chicagosportswebio.com. Just to clear up some of your speculation: I was offered a lot more money then I was making at The Score to leave. No, I don't have to sell any advertising. If I chose to bring in any outside advertising I would get a 15% cut. An analogy I've been using to justify my decision is this: It's similar to an assistant college basketball coach. I could continue to be a part-time producer for the next 3-5-10 yrs and possibly get my own show when the current (Head Coach) retires, or I can leave for my own Head Coaching job at a smaller school and work my way up that way. Hopefully it all works out. Thanks for your support. I'll talk to you soon.

So you guys do get a base salary at Webio? That's good. You were considered a "part-timer producer" at the Score? I thought it was different cuz you were only working a 2-hour show. What does "a lot more money than I was making at The Score" mean? 40K?

Cash those checks as soon as you get them. One day they won't clear. You might as well try to sell some spots. Seriously, give us your rates.

Dude you truly are an idiot  . Put your real name & w2 on the board since you are so interested in salary.

Everybody gets really offended when I guess salarys. I don't understand why. I'm not putting anybody down. I'm just taking a guess. It's just me. A nobody, loser jack ass taking a guess at something.

Everybody on this board is better than me. I've said that a thousand times. Happy?

Yeah. Cuz me asking him means he has to answer it. I know I'm not gonna get an answer. I'm being half sarcastic. Get over it.

I don't think it's wrong for me to ask him the ad rates for his show. It's his job to sell them. This board could lead to clients. He's gotta get the word out for this upstart webio operation.

He doesn't have to sell them but he can if he wants to. I'm curious what the rates would be. I know that makes me horrible and evil.

Good move and good luck Webby. It would be retarded not to make the move, 2 hours a day to develop your craft. Even if the ship goes under in 6 months, you'll have 240 hours of airtime to make demos and find some solid airchecks, which is invaluable.

That's a good point. Plus Webby was part time and he said he got a lot more money than the Score was paying him. I really wasn't trying to insult him with my 40k guess. If he got 40k I think that's great for a 2-hour show that nobody will listen to. 40k for a 15-20 hour work week is more than great. You gotta take that and run if you were "part time" at the Score.

Plus, if you look at Drinky, there is no sure bet that you would get your own show at the Score. Hell, you took air time away from him, Weber. He used to be the main back up. North said these guys are getting health coverage too. Probably wasn't getting that at the Score as a "part timer".

This Hernandez guy must be quite wealthy to lay out all of this money on "no-names" and "has-beens" in the hopes of making a profit. A profit he'll never see. I guess this guy can afford the loss.

I don't know Webber and only caught him for a short time doing a weekend show a couple of weeks ago. I've got nothing against him. Good luck. This webio thing is gonna fail but good luck after that. Like R&B said, at least you'll have your own show on your resume.

I wish you the best with your new move Webby even though I think it's a really risky one hitching yourself to anything created by North in this day and age. With the people that have left the Score though for it I can't help but thinking if you had stayed that you would have had more/better long term opportunities at the station filling in for the defectors. But I'm sure there's more to the story that you can't talk about on the board. Good luck and kick some ass. Plus you'll probably have more listeners than North which will make you feel pretty good right?

It's very risky, but more for Jesse then Webby. He's young and that's the best time to take a risk, don't sit on your hands hoping to become a replacement then get the ax so the Score can open up cap space to sign Mac. As long as he doesn't burn bridges, he'll be able to crawl back if need be, The not burning bridges part might be difficult working for Pappy who will likely will treat this shit like some gang initiation, "you haveda fuck up da old place, aint dat right Webby, dat place blows, screw CBS radio"

It actually makes the most sense for a guy like Webber. As far as this helping his career. Hood has already failed at ESPN 1000 and the Score. Both stations didn't think much of him. Hood took this cuz he's out of options. Chet is nearing retirement so he'll do this until it goes out of business. No big deal to him.

The others are "no name" radio guys but they are doing something else. This is just a 2nd job. I'm talkin about Doyle (Big 10 Net) and Teddy (Tribune). The rich boxer, "Boom Boom", is the strange one. I don't know why he wants to do this. I don't know why Chicagowebio would hire him. He must be friends with Hernandez. He lives in LA and probably knows nothing about Chicago sports. Whatever. I guess it's just something to kill the days for him.

Webber can still have a chance at the Score or ESPN when this blows up. He'll also have experience doing a show 5 days a week. I'm sure he didn't burn any bridges at the Score. It's not like they fired him. They seemed to like him. He rose pretty quickly and got some "on-air" shifts at a pretty young age. They can't be upset with him for taking more money and getting his own show.

This just in!!! Teddy Greenstein backs out!!! Weber has to find a new partner. The Trib told Teddy he can't do it.

From Ted Cox:

Greenstein suddenly got the kibosh Thursday from his editors at the Chicago Tribune, after they had originally given him the OK; North and Program Director Jesse Rogers will look for a replacement host.

"My editors felt that the time commitment required to prepare for and do a 10-hour-a-week show would be too great," Greenstein said.

Can someone tell who tell the hell is Webber?

Matt Weber is a guy I've met and was on the Score and is going to the webio and Beardown keeps talking about Webber - WHO THE FUCK IS WEBBER?

Also, I was the first to say this made alot of sense.

Webby, can you now do a little firing on the Score for bringing Hamp in and giving you a awful show to try to put some spit and polish to?

How does this make any sense? Hanley and Mulligan work 20 hours a week at 6:00 AM each day and they are able to?

Are there any Tribune writers who also host radio shows?

David Haugh is a Tribune guy who's a fill in host on ESPN but not an everyday guy.

Good luck, Webby (whoever you are). Hoody is fun and you should enjoy his company.

Webby wrote this in answer: "I can leave for my own Head Coaching job at a smaller school and work my way up that way."

So radio is a "fall back" job? With that approach, I'd grab the whistle and chalkboard now because you don't appear your heart is completely in it. Doing a full-time radio show is not a part-time proposition.

The Trib was incredibly short-sighted in rejecting Teddy's desire to be a part of the webio thing. The Sun-Times gets a four-hour ad every morning on the Score and very few Trib writers have a regular presence anywhere (correct on Haugh, but he's the exception).

As for M&H working 20 hrs a week.... wrong. They're on the air 20 hrs a week. I assume they don't roll out the headsets and recreate (thanks, Lou Henson). With the early start times and having to stay up late, I'm guessing their quality of work suffers. Tough to be exceptional when you're serving two masters on such a full-time basis.

it sounded to me that his desire is to host a full-time sports talk show. this is his best opportunity right now apparently, and he is going for it. how does that lead you to say his heart isnt in it? it tells me the opposite. it sounds like he is willing to take a chance and do whatever he can to get on the air and hone his craft, even if it means taking a risk.

Yeah Mac. I read Webby's response as "I could sit here at the big school (WSCR) and wait for maybe someday a full time slot to open up and try for it, or I could go be a FT host at a much smaller school now (Northy's newest life's dream).

Mac being an ass, hard to believe. The guy is going to get more money, airtime and experience, so that means his heart isn't in it?

I personally figured that they wouldn't be able to maintain both schedules, but they've been doing it longer than I expected. Still seems an insane stretch to do both jobs.

I think it would be harder on Hanley than Mully because Mully is the Bigfoot while Hanley is on the beat.

If that's the "Mac" I think it is (I do know who you are), then it is a man I respect very much for his radio mechanics and his ability as a talk show host. I've learned a lot from his career (both things I would do and things I probably wouldn't) and I consider him a major influence. After reading his posts I now have an entire new mission in life! I've got my whistle and clipboard in hand, and I'm now determined to make sure Mac knows who I am :)
