That sounds like a perfectly sensible plan. Centers are almost always a middle-round draft pick anyway (so are guards), so if you're planning on rehabilitating the middle of the line, you're still OK without the 1st orund pick. I'm always nervous about the "veteran will be a great guy to teach the youngsters" argument, partly because I can't quantify it, and partly because I don't know if it's true. I also figure that that's why you have coaches.

The one area this leaves them in a lurch is at defensive end, where they're not likely to find a major player in the middle rounds. WRs might be there. Defensive backfield types might be there. But they've had good luck finding value in the middle rounds in both places (Alex Brown, Mark Anderson, Nathan Vasher) so maybe I'm too nervous about that.

I was under the impression that Beekman was being groomed to
replace Kreutz after they put him out to stud. Did I miss something?

Beekman played some center in college, but he projects out better as your "swinging guard" than he does as a center. I'd rather haev a guy that played the position all through college than one who dabbled in it. He could do it in a pinch though.

I had an interesting conversation with a friend who is a huge Cubs and Broncos fan in Denver (she grew up watching the Cubs on WGN and never quite liked the Rockies).

First she compared this to the Cubs losing Greg Maddux (obviously the Broncos are the Cubs in this situation with Cutler being Maddux).

She is also a diabetec and told me that a lot of Cutlers off the field problems were before his diagnosis when people claimed he was out drinking and he'd deny it.

A diabetec having a reaction can appear to be drunk easily. My cousin is and when he's starting to have a reaction you could easily mistake it for drunkenness.

And all accounts are he's cleaned up after the diagnosis because not only his career but his life depends on it.

It will be interesting to see if the Bears hand the starting job to Cutler or it the they afford Basanez the chance to compete for it.

Yeah, this will take all the fun out of the exhibition season when the 3rd stringer goes 6-8 for 54 yards and a TD and is immediately slotted in as the QB of the future and needs to start.

Schlereth has a personal hate of Cutler. He actually accused him of faking his diabetes last year.

And funny how much better Orton seems to be in the national media's eyes now that the Bears traded him. I don't think he earned this much praise when he was playing for the Bears.

Yeah this cracks me up. A complete 180. Hypocrisy to the extreme.

Orton was considered a joke by the national pundits. I forget which prime-time crew it was (maybe the Thursday-night crew?) that ripped him a new one all night long during a game last season. Going to commercials they were doing slow-motion replays of his interceptions, counting how many seconds (exaggerated by not adjusting for the slow motion, the idiots) he was staring down his receiver.

Orton was never respected in the least by these guys, now overnight he has "intangibles"?? :D

I think those AFC defenses are going to like this. Does Denver play Baltimore next year? Pittsburgh?

While the national media is salivating over what Orton might achieve with Marshall and Royal, they might stop to consider that first, he has to beat out Chris Simms in pre-season. Which very likely might not happen - unless of course he is fast-tracked because of the investment made in him, which would certainly make for good banter in Denver when the lesser QB in pre-season is named the starter. Welcome to the wonderful world of QB controversy, Bronco fans! We should have thrown in Caleb Haney just to make it even more interesting.

By the way, "intangibles" is my favorite euphemism, barely edging out "having curves" (hearkening back to old threads about Jessica Simpson). Try this: write down your list of QBs who you think are the best around the league. Go ahead and add on great ones from the past. Now, put a star next to the ones whose greatest (perhaps only?) asset is "intangibles". Mm-hmm.
