He was "laid off". That's absolutely right. I understand the confusion caused by saying "fired" but that's really what it was. My company had a 10% layoff, my division had 1%, the only guy was THIS guy (my division is the only division in the black on the balance sheet and we generate about 22% of the overall company revenue). My division was to have no layoffs, but they saw this as a perfect opportunity to eliminate a very poor employee and they pulled the trigger.

Kind of late to the party here, but I can confirm that telecom is a small and incestuous industry. People move around a lot and reputation matters. You do not put your name and reputation behind anybody if you are not 100% certain of their abilities, because it could come back to bite you. There is a saying in this industry that the ass you're kicking today could be the ass you're kissing tomorrow. I wouldn't have recommended this guy either based on what I've read.

Companies often use "layoffs" to eliminate problem employees. We all know this.

For the guy to lie on his resume/application and say he was somebody's boss when he was not is unethical and unprofessional, and is usually grounds for dismissal should someone find out the information was not true.

Darko has no obligation to this guy except to tell the truth: he was not my boss. I would not hire him if I had the opportunity.

I also work in a very tight-knit industry, and recommending someone who isn't qualified could be disastrous. Nobody benefits when an unqualified worker gets a job...not even the unqualified worker. Yes, he may get a paycheck, but you're setting him up for failure.

Yeah Nas, he's my brother...but I believe he acted ethically and did the right thing. I would have done the exact same thing in his position and I would have absolutely no second thoughts about it.

The problem is that the person asking the question probably should not have asked the question. My office is clear on what can and cannot be answered when receiving a call like this.

However, the real world is such that I may make an inquiry about a person with whom I may have a concern. If Darkside is not his supervisor then I would want to know who is/was the supervisor? I may possibly ask Darkside his general opinion about that employee, but I wouldn’t ask for a recommendation because he is/was not the applicant’s supervisor. Even then, I wouldn’t mention to anyone else what I had done.

DS wasn’t wrong for answering a question that was asked. That the former employee used him as a reference without his knowledge is his rolling the dice and getting crap.
