He thinks Zambrano bunting for a hit is bad baseball. How cluess is this man about this sport?

Tie game 2-2 in the 5th, leadoff batter needs to get on.

He says asking your pitcher to run hard is the wrong thing to do.

What if there is a chopper that the 1st baseman has to field, doesn't the pitcher have to run hard to cover the bag?

Kudos to whoever came on with him for Sports Central. Tried to explain to him how wrong he was but Mem's stuck to his theory which is just dumb. I hope this guy never coached any youth baseball.

Memelo is a whiny NY'er who should go back there. He still sucks after all these years. WGN should just shit can him. He sucked at the score and he sucks on WGN.

It kind of reminds me of when Hank Steinbrenner bitched after Chien-Ming Wang got injured after running out a ground ball last year  being that baseball is a sport I think that its ok to expect everyone on the field to be able to run without fear of injury. Except for peter pan...

i would have liked to hear the "douchebag of the week" nominations for lou or zambrano had zambrano pulled a hammy busting his ass down the line on that play. i dont think it is an unfair criticism to say that doing something like that is dealing with the devil.

its nothing like hank steinbrenner saying pitchers should never hit and it should be abolished because his guy got hurt running the bases. memelo never said they should do away with pitchers hitting and everyone should use the DH. he was saying that when you ask a pitcher to do something extreme and unnecessary like that, you are begging for trouble, and i dont disagree.

i am on the fence about it myself...i understand his argument, but i have always believed that a player who suits up had better be ready to do whatever it takes - running, hitting, and fielding - and put in the work to make sure they are ready for any circumstance. Z appears to be that kind of guy, and i am glad he can do these kind of things. lou knows his players capabilities more than jim memelo or any of us, but i dont think memelos point is utterly absurd.

...just a follow up on this arugment. fergie jenkins agreed with memolo when asked about the play on the wgn morning show...i dont know if fergie coached youth baseball or is from ny, but since he played 20 years in the majors and is a hall of famer, i might go with him and memolo over pud

Gotta love Lou's comments from yesterday.

"What if he hit a ball off the wall and hurt his hammy running into 2nd. What he's not supposed to hit a double".

Memmolo, what a goof.

dude was running down the line, so what? that happens all the time. What if it were a ground ball in the hole and he was jogging down the line and got thrown out. Everyone would be pissed. "He didn't run it out!"

i dont think anyone is criticizing zambrano for hustling rather than jogging down the line on a grounder. the question is whether it is wise to purposely have him bunt for a hit where he has to give maximum effort to reach. running out a grounder is a part of the game that cant be avoided, and any ballplayer with some pride will run hard. bunting for a hit is a conscious decision to put a player in a situation where he has to give full maximum effort to get a hit.

i see both sides of the argument, but i dont think id be asking him to bunt for a hit, and if he did it on his own and i were manager, id give him an attaboy for doing whatever he can to get on base and for hustling, then id be telling him to knock it off.
