Agreed. My recollection is that he was alone.

Well, he started with Tom Webb as the news anchor. Webb was fired and replaced with one of the women from Shadow Traffic, if I recall correctly.

You are correct about Tom Webb being WSCR's first morning newsman when Tom Shaer hosted mornings solo at 820 AM. Keep in mind that The SCORE was only on from sunrise to sunset when they first signed on the air in 1992 on Belmont Ave., and Tom's start time was whenever sunrise was that day...

Funniest moment I remember from his show was when the were doing the 24 second shot clock and something happened to the "shot clock" cart (mis-fired or something). Shakey Siuntres jumped on the mic and said: "We'll give him a clean cock again."

I wonder if Murph would ever be allowed to play this for "Random Tape"

If I recall, the 24 second shot clock was on Thursday's...then he would try and even it with something else on Friday. Was it "Schmooz Patrol" or something like that? All I remember is...it was bad radio.

"Look Alive!" That's what Tom always said when he hosted mornings on the original SCORE...

Memolo showing up to cohost made that show a lot less torturous.

Then we had the two year disaster of Buffone and Van Lier on their own, with Memolo doing weekend updates and other odds and ends. Wait, that only seemed like a two year trainwreck. I guess it was only three weeks before they put Memolo back driving.

Hmmm..."The Bear and the Bull", dating back to when the SCORE started broadcasting 24/7 sports talk at 1160 AM in the late '90s...

Tom Webb died, he wasn't fired.

Did he die while employed by The Score? I seem to recall he was let go and then died shortly thereafter...both under rather hushed circumstances.

Hey,
Thanks for jogging my memory. I remember Tom Webb. I think he also performed locally as an actor. A few years ago,I accidently caught Tom Schaer on Oprah Winfrey. (The show not the woman!!) He was sans glasses and talking up a storm as a random audience member. Don't remember what he was bitchin' about, but it looked like he was "playing to the crowd". I thought his old 'SCR radio show was respectable and he did a fine job.

This sounds like as good a place as any to post this story. Right out of college I ended up working at White Deer Run golf course up in Vernon Hills. We had to do set up for the various golf scrambles and outings and what not and we would line all of the carts up in a certain order and then put names on it so people knew what groups they were in and then they could roll out in a fairly controlled manner towards the correct hole they were starting on.

Anyways we would take the keys out of the carts so people didnt take them early and screw up the set up. Tom Shaer was involved in one of these scrambles and he wanted to go hit some balls at the range which was probably 1000 yards away from the clubhouse. Well he didn't want to take the time to walk it and there were employees shuttling people back and forth to the range but he didn't want to wait for one of these carts or ride with the common riff raff.

So he threw a shitfit about how he needed the keys to his golf cart now. And he actually said to me....DONT YOU KNOW WHO I AM!!!!!.....and I actually did know who he was but I mean cmon its Tom Shaer so just to piss him off I was like yeah i have no clue. He was livid at this point and ended up going to talk to one of the managers. They gave him the keys or whatever but at the end of the day had he asked me nicely I would have helped him out but since he was a raging self important rectum then he got put on the pay no mind list. Tom Shaer is a douche.

Thanks for sharing! It's hard to fathom how some of these guy's get all full of themselves because they are local radio/TV personalities. Anyone else with stories of local assclown's?

A simpler time. I still recall driving through Palatine on the way home, and the station would just cut out.

Webb was let go, and died a couple years later after heart surgery. I'll look for Feder's column on his death.

November 6, 1995:

Tom Webb , a local actor and former morning news anchor at WSCR -AM (820), returns to the stage in his one-man show, "The Last Romantic: F. Scott Fitzgerald," at Evanston's Next Theater, starting Dec. 7.

This from Feder, Christmas Eve 1996:

Friends and colleagues are mourning the death of Tom Webb , veteran Chicago radio newsman and stage actor. He served as a mentor to a generation of broadcasters at many local stations, including WSCR-AM (820), WMAQ-AM (670) and WLUP-FM (97.9). Webb, 58, died Sunday after complications from heart surgery. His family has asked that donations be sent to the American Heart Association. Services and burial will be in Webb's native Tennessee.

This from January 9, 1997:

Friends and colleagues of Tom Webb will toast the memory of the late Chicago radio newsman and stage actor at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 20 at Magnum's, 225 W. Ontario. Webb, 58, died Dec. 22 after complications from heart surgery. He served as a mentor to a generation of broadcasters at many local stations.

Just never liked a Tom Shaer radio showgram and barely ever listened.

The Jiggs/North and HFC is what got me in.

The first few weeks of Bull and Bear were great. But a lot of that was Shakey Suimtres. When he left, the timing got flatter. Then Norm wasn't around all the time. Then Memalo was brought in to shore up the show when it was getting real weak.

In my eyes, Jimalo saved us from two bad shows (Schaer solo & later Bull & Bear.) I was very thankful for that, because, well, Schaer was really bad.
