We're organizing our first gathering of drinking, shenanigans, and sports talk for this coming Wednesday (June 3rd) at 6pm. We'll be at Justin's Bar on the North Side watching the Cubs and Sox, and hanging out until...well, everyone leaves. Justin's is located at 3358 N Southport Ave in Chicago. This is a complete informal, unorganized thing...and we will NOT be picking up the bill, but feel free to come by and bring whoever you want. Let me know if you have any questions and/or if you're able to attend. Hope to see you all there, and we'll talk to you soon.

I fired Justins LONG ago because they took the cajun porkchop sandwich off the menu. If you can get that delicious sammy back on the menu I will not only attend, I will buy you beer or two!

Webby, how many listeners does your show average? How many listeners do the other shows average?

3 things:

(1.) Answer these questions.
or
(2.) Tell me that you won't answer these questions and explain why you won't.
but
(3.) Don't tell me that you don't know. That would be a lie.

Thanks.

Beardown,

I would never lie to you or anyone on this board because let's be honest...what do I have to gain by doing that? ...You guessed it, nothing. I will tell you that I haven't been told numbers as far as how they break down to each individual show. I'm sure at some point, after trends are established and we've been doing this for awhile, those will be presented to me. However, I have been told what the entire station's numbers were for the first month (3 weeks really). April 6th - April 30th. I'm not going to tell you exactly what those numbers were because, again...what do I have to gain by doing that? I'd probably get into trouble and that's a headache that's not worth it for me. I will say though, that these numbers were honestly twice as much as I expected for the first month, and compared very favorably to the other sports radio station's websites in town. As far as our show goes...we get three times as many emails as I would get producing/hosting a show on The Score, but far less calls. Come out to Justin's on Wednesday and I'll answer any other questions you may have. Take care.

The webio has an excellent line-up of programming. They have less commercials and they go over mostly local teams. They devoted significant time to the Blackhawks where the other outlets are scared to take the risk of talking hockey. As a listener I feel like I am getting in on the ground floor of something that I hope will be very successful. Each show sounds fresh, and the hosts are enthusiastic. They are able to get good guests. The sound quality is solid inside my office building.

My only concern related to ratings is that I hope they are solid. I want these shows on the "air". If you don't like the webio then you should still cheer for its success if for no other reason than it will push the traditional outlets to improve the quality of their programming. Competition is healthy.

I hope you get picked up by a station out there and give me an alternative to Holms and Hampton. Dial-up does not allow me to stream your show at this point, Webbs and Huebs. I'm sure you guys are doing a good job though.

Thanks for the answer.

1. You guys are really doing comparable numbers to ESPN's and the Score's webcasts? I find that hard to believe.

2. You said you would get in trouble for telling us those exact 3 week numbers. Why? We're just a small group here. We're all nobodys. Have you been told to keep your mouth shut? Or do you just assume you would get in trouble? If that number was more than what everybody thought, like you said, and everybody there is proud, then why not make it public? Unless North has ordered it to be kept secret so he could lie to advertisers. But I would suspect sponsors would want to see legit documents on your listnership count. I guess he could show them false numbers.

3. Why do you think it's so difficult for you to get your daily listener count from Jesse? It would seem they could get the number every day. I'm sure you'd like to know what you're doing every day. Why won't they let you know?

I guess my point is if they're being honest with their sponsors about their listenership what does it matter if they make that number public? Their ad money will be based on the data and demos they show their sponsors. That's all that matters to webio. It's no big deal if they make it public.

I would guess that they are banking on the numbers they currently have growing over time, and right now, that number is very small, even if it is better than what they thought it would be at this time. They probably don't want to scare away advertising in this economy.

Yeah, but once again, wouldn't they have to tell sponsors the truth when they talk to them anyway? They'll be scared away at that point. Or they'll just pay the price for whatever listeners webio does have. Even if it's a small price. Doesn't matter if they make it public.

I'm sure they do have to prove to their advertisors that their website/shows are worth the money they are putting into this, but raw numbers can be deceiving if they can prove that they are trending upward, or that a certain demoographic is stronger than the actual numbers suggest. In other words, especially early on, I'm sure they want to have control over the numbers so that they can better sell them as opposed to dropping raw numbers on this site for you to belittle.

what does any of this have to do with webby making a post inviting people for a night out of drinking and talking sports? answering his invitation by trying to demand he validate his shows ratings with you seems out of place.

Whatever. I didn't know there was a protocol here. I knew I'd get his attention here cuz he started the thread. I've asked in other threads and couldn't get an answer. I don't think he got too offended. We're all gonna live. He'll go on without giving me another thought and I'll go on to strip clubs. Not that big of a deal.

If the people above him don't want him to spill the numbers, why would he? There is no benefit to him for putting it up here. Your argument isn't with him, it with the people above him.

And I would assume the advertisers know the numbers, as it affects what they do. Posting it on a message board however doesn't do anybody any good at all.

Right. That's why I asked him if he was told to keep his mouth shut. In his answer it didn't seem like he was but just thought he shouldn't say anything.

i dont understand why anyone gives a shit about ratings anyway. i dont have anything riding on them. if i turn on the radio or the webstream and the show is discussing an interesting topic to me, i listen, if not, i dont. i listen to the shows for the topic, not because of any host or network, or because of what the ratings numbers tell me. if any of the current lineup hosts got cancelled tomorrow due to bad ratings, big deal. they will plug the hole with another host who will talk about all the same shit.

Not at all.

1. I know there are more important things in life.

2. I like to take a tone to get answers from our local media stars that come to this board. I've found that's the only way you get answers. What the hell? It worked. I got some info from him. People come here cuz they're interested in Chicago sports media. This is a sports media board. I like to play reporter.

3. I have fun here. People take me more serious than I take myself or this message board. I know I'm worthless. I've said this several times.

4. I know I'm a loser.

I don't think anyone is knockin' ya for asking. However, he did say in his reply:

"I'm not going to tell you exactly what those numbers were because, again...what do I have to gain by doing that? I'd probably get into trouble and that's a headache that's not worth it for me."

which to me gives me the answer... yet you kept going at it. Again, can't knock you for trying and it's definitely not hurting anything. Just don't expect to get much.

I think after he responded I was just wondering out loud and then was talking to other posters. I know he's not gonna give it up.

I would like to know if he was told not to say anything or just thinks he shouldn't. In that quote it seems like he just thinks he shouldn't.

What alot of people fail to realize is that ratings don't matter as much as how much ad revenue a station generates. The Score and ESPN 1000 ratings are alomst identical yet the Score generates far more ad revenue.

As Cuba Gooding said "Show me the money." That's all station owners care about how much money they can make.

What stations are banking on is that they can cut loose the high priced talent and still make the same ad revenue.

This will be the case for a short time but the listeners will look for other alternatives if they are not interested.

I would love for Webio to broadcast on satellite radio or on 820. It would be great to reclaim 820 as a sports station. 820 was renegade radio when it started and I believe Webio can reclaim the magic.

Robin Earl and I would love to broadcast Bearly Legal on webio and 820.

Get rid of the retreads, get rid of the brain-damaged, and you might be on to something.

It's not a big deal to you only because you're playing your typical role of obtuse jackoff.
