Hey, I just "discovered" this board yesterday while trying to find a discussion on Murph getting canned. Very happy I found this place, had no idea it existed.

Let me say I've been a listener of the Score since day 1 and a HATER of Murph since soon after that. His show was unlistenable, a disgrace. I found myself yelling at the radio sometimes as Murph would talk for 20 minutes straight trying to ask one question to a guest.

He was a first class jerk and he deserves to be FIRED, not just moved to a new time slot.

GOOD RIDDANCE!

I feel bad for anyone that loses their job. However, I don't plan on losing any sleep over it.

Yeah, I guess that's what I'm saying. I just find it difficult to celebrate anybody being fired.

I think you got it all wrong. Murph hasn't been fired. He's being offered a different shift doing the same thing he does now. Feel free to celebrate that you now have the legitimate option to listen to the Score from 9-1.

I'm sorry I am a heartless son of a bitch, but no. I am enjoying every second of this. If a man sucks at his job, then he should be canned. Anyways, Murph would be better off taking Cathy and Judy's spot on WGN.

I guess my empathy is due to my mindset that it's kind of like a grade school environment over there. B&B, Drinky, Goff, Paruch, and M&H (to a degree) are the cool kids and Murph is the outcast. I remember those kids in school who would end up acting out and being complete assholes because they were ripped on so much by the cool crew. A few times I tried to make gestures to these kids to try and help them out a bit but they always would treat me like shit and I'm thinking they were just trying to avoid being made fun of again even though I was just trying to be cool with them. So my response would be "yeah well fuck you that's why everyone hates you" and I'd join in with the other kids making fun of them. I felt justified since they responded like an ass to my gesture but it was just a defense by someone who had become angry and paranoid over their treatment. I know Murph is a prick and a big boy who should know better than the grade schoolers I'm referencing but it still brings back memories. The main thing is that I don't have to hear that awful show ever again.

I feel awful for Murph. He had his audience, he brought in ratings and (ostensibly, by extension) revenue, and did his job as professionally as possible at a station where everyone treated him like shit. As for Terry's assertion that none of the on-air guys had any say in the new schedule, I have a hard time completely taking that at face value (even if that means I'm one of the dreaded Internet conspiracy theorists). Having seen it elsewhere in radio and other institutions where you're dealing with a number of outsized personalities that have to be managed and balanced, these things happen. If you hold that sort of leverage--and all three hosts who will be in his old 1p hour certainly do--you're a fool not to use it.

It's highly suspicious that a program director would jettison a proven commodity like this, isn't it? After consistently winning his daypart for book after book, "maybe we'll find a place for him, or maybe not"? It's not like Mike North being tossed aside after irreparably scuttling morning drive, or Laurence Holmes coming up short again (oh shit, he'll be backing up Terry again, won't he). Given all he's done for the station, he deserves better than the limbo he's in, and so something seems off to me about this whole thing.

I liked Murph in the morning with Fred - I don't know if I actually knew what good sports radio was at the time since that was the time I first started listening to sports radio.

There's a reason the cool kids are the cool kids. Its because they're cool. And the reason the cool kids pick on guys like Murph is because guys like Murph are jackasses who deserve to be ridiculed.

I know exactly what you mean, I enjoyed salisbury and rosenbloom when I first started to listen to sports radio. Looking back on those days, I now feel like a moron for enjoying it...

You are so full of shit. So many of the so called "cool" kids in middle school peak there. This is the pinnacle of their lives. Most (not all) aren't the sharpest tool in the shed, and maybe they happened to physically mature a little sooner than others. In high school or shortly after they get left in the dust.

I had no use for Murph's show, and while I don't know him personally all the anecdotal evidence says he's a douche, but that is one of the most stupid, moronic, asinine, dense,
and whatever other adjective you can think of (well maybe you can't) comments I've seen here in at least a day and a half.

Once again I'll quote Mark Twain: Better to be silent and thought a fool, than to open your mouth and confirm it.

Middle school? How old are you, 15?

Sorry you got picked on in 3rd grade. Sounds to me like you really need to get over it.

Now moving on to the adult world, like I said, the reason the cool kids are cool, well liked, and gravitated to is because they are cool and the reason everyone hates jerkoffs like Murph is because they are jerkoffs like Murph. If he wasn't a prick the cool kids wouldn't have ostracized him. In other words, he brought it upon himself and he deserved every bit of it.

The biggest joke here is that he was allowed to have this job for as long as he did. Between him and North its amazing the Score is still in business.

As Cy mentioned above, Murph always won his books which in the end is how you keep your job for so long. I didn't care for him myself, but to continually win his timeslot is something other hosts on the score wish they could do.

haven't visited the board in a while BUT WOW, when I do come to check it out, big changes. So murph is gone and mac is back, interesting. I agree with the original poster, I was one of the lone Murph fans (even though he's a dickhead and if you know my experience with him, he's a dickhead in real life too) since he did actually talk sports. But I agree, he has lost his mind over these years and the way he handled callers by cutting them off, then accusing the caller of cutting him off, got old fast. Also, his stupid feud with that other thin skinned moron Steve Stone was really ridiculous. also, he should have never gotten into it with Boers since Boers is a loser and murph shouldn't lower himself to that level. His fight with Mully/Handley was really stupid since those 2 guys I can't see anyone getting into a fight with, they're pretty rational people. But I know how he's treated his ex producers and others so I know they have no love loss with this guy. I know he'll probably stick around at the score doing weekends or nights since he is proud of saying he was at the score from day 1. Good luck to him, I really think he would make it BIG TIME at WGN. WGN is just his kind of audience, really would dig his hokey gimmicks, and of course the Cubs talk everyone would love.

Yup, great observation. That was annoying as hell. I think it reflects how he thinks when he talks about either team.

That's hard to say, as southside fans might actually keep the dial on 670 versus going over to ESPN for mid-day radio. Silvy might bang the Cubs drum a ton; but at least he can acknowledge the other team without coming up with moronic conversation pieces like Quentin leading off, quality bullpen stats, and Ozzie now is mad that Beckham is a part of the team.......

Are you serious?

I give Mac two bookings before he topples Silvy and Waddle and even that may be being generous to Silvy and Waddle.

I think you severely underestimate Mac's radio listener following...

Cy, you Caller Bob, I was forced to sit through The Devil Wears Prada once in my life. I don't need to hear the sniping of another low end employee about his high profile boss. Many people have had to work under an unappreciative, demanding superior. Your experiences are common to many in almost every industry.

Dance on the man's grave all you want. He has cemented his legacy and will most likely land another nice paying on air job. You, on the other hand, chose to use your real name for the airing of grievences on a public forum. You did this even after others advised you about its prudence on past occasions. Right or wrong, you have immediately become unhireable to a percentage of your industry.

I feel bad for the way you were treated especially in light of your family circumstances. All the bitching and moaning you do in response to that treatment changes nothing. It is non productive at best and at this point is probably counter productive.

You had a bad boss. Accept that some of the problem was you. Change those personal flaws and become better at your trade.

As far as Murph goes: he was a founding member of an organization, an employee for almost 18 years, he met or exceeded expectations in three different time slots, he continued to get acceptable ratings...These are the objective facts of his employment. If these are true, you cannot come to any conclusion other than that he got a raw deal...but these are the dynamics of the industry in which he chose to be employed. It happens every day.

Heyman Roth didn't question who put the hit on Moe Green because he knew it was business.

Glad to see Murph has at least one member in his ALS  . As for Cy, his input is very much appreciated by me. This board is filled with (sometimes wild) speculation when it comes to behind the scenes matters. Guys like Cy and Mac provide first-hand views which are both credible and IMO interesting.

i have a good friend who interned with murph for a year or so back in the early/mid 90s. the feedback i gathered from him was that murph was OK and they got along alright. although my friend is smart enough to know that whatever the boss says goes, so he didn't make any waves. he noted even back then that murph had a complex about not being treated as well as the other 'SCR personalities.

I think you "hit the" proverbial "nail on its head." Great insight! I think at some point, the cool cats need to let "bygones be bygones" and let it go--they won. And now, I'll "ride off into the sunset" and quit on the cliches, idioms, sayings or whatever they're called.

I can appreciate a little inside info as well. However, this is nothing but sour grapes, which we have read about by a handfull of other unnamed former SCORE employees.

Murph on the other hand, while weird and annoying at times, brings his own brand of sports talk. For the love of God, the man has got to have the greatest show intro. =)
