I hope this collegiate football/baseball player will be better than the last one we drafted...

you can never have enough outfielders.

Didn't we have some meatball Sox fans comments that Jordan Danks was CF of the future? Guess they don't like him that much that they drafted one. Kenny does love the football mentaility guys, not so sure I do.

I hadn't heard anything to suggest the Sox are down on Jordan Danks. Perhaps they just took the best player available or see either this kid or Danks as a LF?

I personally don't like taking players like this in the draft. Better to pick them up later on as re-treads, if anything about their performance shows they might have value. If the Sox plan on staying in the Cell, they don't need "athletic" outfielders - they need guys who can hit the ball out of the park. Mitchell figures to be a .300/.350/.450 guy who might hit 15 HR a season if he's lucky. I like his plate discipline (.471 OBP with 52 BB in 201 AB) but projecting pro stats out of college is next to impossible, and repeating anything approaching that kind of clip for a guy who also K'd 61 times isn't much to bank on.

If his athleticism translates to good contact and plus defense, great. I hope he can eventually be traded.

This was a reach pick, obviously see something in him most everyone else doesnt. I will bet money he never makes it to the bigs.

As for Jordan Danks, the guys bat is big league ready, hes not up with the Sox why?

A target for former Oklahoma State QB Josh Fields.

How soon can we add him to the list of wasted 1st round draft picks?

Now this guy will have to use a wooden bat.

The Sox could always use a few guys to get on base and run instead of waiting around for the 3 run homer.

Kenny Williams should know that more than anyone since he hasn't had a CF since 2005.

Kenny was a football/baseball player. He evidently made the wrong choice

MLB network analysts loved the pick. They also said he was the best athlete in the draft. And, because he played football, he's built pretty solid and could provide some pop at the top of the line up. Potentially, we could have the next Ricky Henderson. Now, having said that, if he only gets to half the production that Henderson got, Mitchell will have a great career. And there probably will never be another Ricky Henderson.

Best Athlete in the draft is usually not the best baseball player. I am in agreement with Keyser, I would have rather they went with the arm from IU.

I am surprised neither Chicago team took an arm in the first round.

Interesting meatball analysis ... he's a football player like Fields, Owen and Borchard, so he must suck too. People who actually know what they're talking about have actually seen this guy play are saying and that this is one of the best picks in the draft.

White Sox take Jared Mitchell from LSU. That’s upside, and that’s up the middle. You just watch his video and you’d think he was a top 10 guy. Love, love, love this pick.

Didn't Frank Thomas play football also?

Mitchell plays RF for LSU and I look forward to watching him in the College World Series (though the Tigers have a tough first round draw in Virginia). I read that he may not have the instincts to play center and projects as a left fielder. If that's the case there's a question whether he will ever hit enough to be a left fielder.

He has enough arm to play RF. With Jordan Danks also in the system, you only need one of them to pan out for center.

I hope to not spend another minute concerned about this guy until he makes the MLB roster.

He has a right fielders arm on the college level but it is below average at the major league level. I saw comparisons to Denard Span and Carl Crawford and if that's true I'll be ecstatic. I just think they should have drafted the best player (Eric Arnett) rather than a risk/reward guy.

Arnett ... well, they did draft his battery mate, Phegley. Which was an interesting pick in itself as he is Tyler Flowers, Part Deux. Good stick, bad glove.

Passed on Scheppers to get him.

BINGO!

One day all the youngsters out there will become jaded like Good Dolphin and myself and know that 99.99% of these kids are just a prospect and a hope. Reliance upon this talent gets your teams nowhere. It is actually one thing I like about Kenny, dealing youngsters all day for proven talent. What I dont like is then kenny bitching that his minor leagues didnt develop anything after he traded it all away, but thats another story.

Occasionally a guy like Straussberg is ready for the bigs, Prior was ready. The combination of a guy that is hyped and is ready is so rare of an event, it should never be counted on.

After a lifetime of Earl Cunninghams, Gary Scott's and Scotti Thompsons, I finally learned after watching Felix Patterson and Hee Sop Hill become nothing more than Dewayne Wise.

The allure of these guys to a GM is that they can find a guy that can be paid less than average for 6 years and produce All Star numbers, thus allowing money for other positions is all they want. Braun, Longoria are the cream of the crop and even their "long term" deals are average money for the 2 best young hitters in the game.
