Webby - first off, have to say I feel bad for this how it panned out - you and freddy were one of the shows I listened to regularly. And get your ass to Hoops 4.

At just 25 years of age, Webby writes better than most of the writers in the newspapers.
Great article.

Thanks for posting this.

I wish Webby well and I hope he gets a chance at his own show on a real station soon. I said this in another thread, but I would gladly take him and Fred in the morning slot at the SCORE. They had a good show.

Yeah, and I agree with him...North should have made it his business to know more about Hernandez before he was "vouching for" a convicted felon with all of these young people who looked up to him. Pity, he really screwed the pooch this time.

A couple of days later, 5 other people had their checks bounce from that same pay date...roughly 1/4 of our Webio staff. The next day David Hernandez emailed a copy of a letter sent from his bank explaining that it was indeed a bank error, and that they deeply apologized. . .

After three days of not hearing from Hernandez, he finally met with us today (to all of our surprise) and fed us some lines about how he would refund us, and assured us that Webio would not miss a beat. He then left and of course...I've received NO MONEY /

What an absolute piece of shit.

Interesting read. I agree with you on the point that if you didn't take the job and the Webio took off, you would be kicking yourself for years. Plus that big pay increase is nice too. Hope you find some gainful employment somewhere soon and remember that you've got to risk it to get the biscuit.

That was interesting. Jeez, Webby wanted to tell the entire story. That was long. Can't blame him. It's quite a story.

He said he was being paid 3X what he was making at the Score. I think it's safe to say that would be between 80 and 90k. He was just doing a 2 hour show. So you gotta figure Hood, Chet and Doyle were making (until they bounced) 150 to 200k. Those guys did longer shows and they had been in the biz longer. Just a guess.

I can't believe how Webby described that Hernandez spent so stupidly with mailing checks and all the cool stuff they had at the station.

He bounced checks but he sent 5 webio guys to Detroit and it was reported that he spend 250k on billboards and TV spots. It's amazing.

How did Webby ever think that Hernandez was going to consistently pay him (or anyone else) that kind of money? Webby bought a car too. Man that stinks. Did Hernandez forge the bank letter too stating that there was an error on their part?

Yeah, that sounded spectacularly stupid, especially in today's economy. So besides being a convicted felon and ponzi schemer he was a bad businessman just like his partner, North. A good ponzi schemer can go years before he's caught...hell Madoff went decades. This idiot couldn't make it three months...

That's the part that I find so curious. If you're gonna be a scammer at least be good at it. I just don't get how he was tossing 100 dollar bills around like he's a big shot. The goal is to steal and he couldn't even do that right.

Sorry Webby.

I still don't really understand what happened. How did North and Hernandez get together here?

If Hernandez sent checks via Fed Ex instead of using the US mail, that would be another warning sign. Using the US Mail to commit fraud opens the door for the Postal Inspectors to become involved. The postal authorities are very aggressive when prosecuting fraudulent activities. Be very suspicious when people avoid the US Mail.

Matt, that's a pretty comprehensive description of everything that went down, and I'm truly sorry for your situation.

Reading about how the guy was giving you suites at The Cell, paying you $500 up front, made me think of Pinocchio at Pleasure Island - one of the scariest frickin' cartoon scenes I recall from my childhood.

Hang in there and God bless Matt....

I want to feel bad for these guys but it seemed too good from the get go. I sense strong negativity about the Norths part in all of this. I dont know shit about Webby but based on his blog, he's very intelligent and will be fine. If he left with class as he said he did, it would not surprise me if they asked him back.

Hernandez will def go to jail for this and he will try to cut a deal. Hernandez will try to implicate the Norths and many others to try to save his own ass. They all do. But even I dont believe the Norths are guilty of anything other than stupidity and greed. They had to be relevant RIGHT NOW. No matter what. It sure does seem like Webbys a good young guy but I hope he's done with any North project. How many people will ever trust that guy again. The dumbest guy out there is the next guy that associates their self with North.

Good luck Webby.

Seriously

What else can possibly be said that hasn't been said here.

I think the vast majority of people are pulling for Webby, as well as the other CS Webio employees.

Matt had a good solid 2 months of on-air time that he gets to have in his portfolio. With the afternoon dump that is on ESPN 1000, 'MVP would be stupid not to go after some of the Webio talent (a select few, including Webby) to re-build their bench.

That's what it seems based on the producers post, and Webby's blog.

I havnt heard Webby do a show but some that have say he's not bad. And if Larry Holmes has a gig, The Score would be smart to fire his ass and bring some fresh new talent like a Webber.

Say what you want, but the 'Afternoon Dump' is schooling Boers and Bernstein in the ratings.

The Score should get Webby back. He had a good show and would be a nice guy for the bench to develop into his own show down the road.

Jessie? Mr. Professional told you to call the owner yourself? lol

If a guy I worked for told me to call the owner because my check bounced, I would, but that would be the last time I deal with the guy who was suppossed to run the place.

Jessie is a great producer and a fine reporter because he is a good change of pace, but Jessie is not running any company of mine.

That's a really good question. I can totally see Hernandez seeing North as "The Mark" from the beginning. When North walks into a room with a con artist and says "Hey buddy, what's goin' on?", looking all stupid like he always does, a con man can't help but salivate. Especially knowing that North, despite being a complete dumb ass, has some power and knows some people.

North is what every con man is looking for. He needed him to convince radio people to join. He needed him to get to Reinsdorf and other sponsors to get involved. Henandez told North he'd be part owner and that was never gonna happen. But he knew North would fall for it. It was his plan to get rid of North, at some point, all along.

It's been brought up on the board by others recently, but Medical Staffing Professionals and a sports show seemed like a strange relationship to begin with.

I can see Jesse pissing his pants when Weber called to bitch him out about the bounced check. That's when Jesse was thinking "I wish I was doing 'Hit & Run' right now. Why did I fall for this?"

Actually, if you think about it, Hernandez may have had a death wish. What con man/ponzi schemer chooses a business with such a high profile to use as an illegal operation. This guy was nuts. Most guys that do this keep a low profile and hide from attention. No one had ever heard of Madoff before the scheme was uncovered yet he was running a $50 billion operation. This guy was paying for billboards and ads drawing attention to his crime all the while. If you read Ed Sherman's account of the first broadcast of webio it included a one hour interview with Hernandez about his various business interests...thats just crazy.

If Hernandez went into this win the intention of perpetrating a con, he was amazingly bad at it. If you're running a Ponzi scheme, aren't you supposed to keep the money invested by others? By all accounts he spent quite a bit.

He could've easily set up North and the others by saying his investment was based upon projected ad revenue that didn't come through, making the ripped off parties look responsible for the webio's failure. Even in that scenario, it's not a sound strategy for stealing money. I just don't see how he made any cash off this scheme as it was, which makes me think he's a terrible at being a con man, as his record would indicate.

You're right. He doesn't know how to do it. He does know how to pick "marks". That part he's good at. Can't get any better than Mike North. A smarter con man would have succeeded. Future con men will study this case.
