Divers search Chicago River for jumper
June 18, 2009 7:00 PM STORY

Divers searched the Chicago River at Jackson Boulevard this evening for a person who jumped into it, officials said.

As of about 6 p.m. the search was being conducted for the person in the water near Canal Street and Jackson, said Fire Department spokesman Quention Curtis.

All boat traffic was stopped along the river between Monroe Street and Congress Parkway, said U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Jamison Burkett.

He said a Coast Guard boat was heading to the scene to assist Chicago fire and police personnel.

As of about 4:15, there wasn't jack shit going on at the bridge by Jackson and Canal. Let alone somebody standing there waiting to jump.

A little updated:

Divers pulled a man from the Chicago River who allegedly jumped in near Jackson Boulevard this evening, officials said.

At about 6:35 p.m., divers rescued a man about 20-30 years old from the water near Canal Street and Jackson, said Fire Department spokesman Quention Curtis.

Fire paramedics were giving the man cardiopulmonary resuscitation and will transport him to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious-to-critical condition, Curtis said.

All boat traffic was stopped along the river between Monroe Street and Congress Parkway during the search, after the man reportedly was seen jumping into the water a bit before 5:45 p.m., said U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Jamison Burkett.

He said a Coast Guard boat assisted Chicago fire and police personnel.

Bellyflop could. Hypothermia could. Sucking up water into lungs as soon as you're in probably could too. Jumping in wasted could. Jumping in front of a boat could. Jumping because you're an attention hoe, not likely.

Getting thrown from a 10 story balcony after getting caught with your wife's sister is pretty bad...
