Murph and Mully went at it about reporting on Grossman during crosstalk. I already knew Murph was an asshat, that exchange sealed it.

I am slightly vague on the details, but it was after Grossman hurt his knee in Minnesota. Murph started accusing Mully of not investigating and asking the right questions in the locker room. Mully started defending himself, and Murph just started yelling more telling him to do his job. By this point, Mully was almost laughing at Murph, and Mully said "Way to keep your sense of humor." I believe this was the day Murph didn't not flip off the microphone, as they were in different locations. I'm sure this has been brought up at length in another thread and I'm doing a poor job with the exact facts. However, this was pretty much the end of crosstalk for years.

any stories about the old Coppock on Sports show would be great or Dahl and Brandmeier who were allegedly funny at one point.

Not Kevin Matthews tho...he was terrible...nobody liked him. Im sure he's selling Sox on an off ramps somewhere...

I remember Mac telling a story of being in the bathroom when Mike Greenberg walked in and didn't realize that Dan was there and that Greeny looked in the mirror and said something to the likes of, "You handsome devil, you".

One of my favorite Murph stories was when he had on a football hall of famer - I can't remember his name for the life of me - grrrr. Anyway, he asked the guy how did he go about his bowling career while playing football and the guy was taken aback. Murph said, "yeah it's in my notes that you were a pro bowler from xxxx to xxxx" and then he realized his mistake and blamed his producers for writing it wrong. The guy was in the pro bowl for those years - lol. That was f'n hilarious.

I disagree with the comment about Kevin Mathews - I was a big Kev Head back in the day as well as Brandmeir.

People always greeting Buzz Kilman with, "Right on, Buzz" on Johnny B's show always gave me a chuckle for some reason.

I remember him going on about the small army of thugs that jumped him.

Pretty much what you'd expect from a blowhard that just got his ego handed to him.

Not that I recall RPB. I think Mac has always been respectful if not reverent of the fact that Chet gave him his first big opportunity on the air. I think Mac has always chided Chet but in good natured fashion - if there was more to it, I don't know about it.

Oh ok - I don't know anything about that then. I would be interested in hearing as well.

IIRC, when Mac left for the Score, Chet's show was still on MVP. I don't remember specifics but I'm pretty sure Mac was openly ripping on Chet for a good long time, even after Chet's show was gone. I don't think they buried that hatchet until after Mac went to ESPN.

The day on Brandmeier's show when "Jerry Lewis" called Bea Arthur. I happily state that I have a (crummy) recording of it, and included one of my favorite lines of all times, wherein "Jerry" describes Bea Arthur to a hotel desk clerk by saying Bea "looks like an oven mitt".

I remember Coppock doing COS on WMAQ in the evenings and after Sox games in the early '80s. Then, he moved to WLUP-AM where he was doing nights during the heyday. Then that transformed later into WMVP when they wanted to do sports in the early '90s and I think Coppock even moved to afternoons when Dahl and Wolf were doing mornings. Coppock got destroyed in the ratings against the Score as Chet's schtick sounded old and dated next to guys on the Score venting and yelling "RAYYYYYY" all the time.

I don't remember any specific stuff from Mac, just generally ripping Chet from time to time.

I don't think MVP became ESPN until like '97 or '98, long after Chet was gone I believe. Chet went to NY somewhere in that timeframe in the '90s too I believe but can't remember when.

The only thing I really remember from the Chet/Mac stuff was that it seemed like Chet was mad that Mac left to compete against him. It sounded like Chet felt betrayed or something and Mac was just going to a better position. I'm sure Mac has posted the real story here somewhere. Search for it.  Search.

Anyway, seems Mac was pretty irritated with Chet not being too pleased with his departure and the bad blood took off from there. But I probably have it all wrong.

There was a part 2 to the Mully/Murph stuff too which ended the crosstalk for good in that incarnation. That was when Murph was upset that Mully told Greenstein (or Sherman) that Murph gave Mully the one finger salute. And that's where the famous "face to face over the phone" line comes from. I think Mthiel has it available if you search thru his posts.

I forgot <<echo>> ... the phone call ended with "Jerry" telling Bea Arthur the following (old) joke: "What do Estelle Getty going down on you have in common with walking a tightrope? Whatever you do, don't look down <<glavin-noises>>". Phenomenal.

(I have no idea why the bloody hell I originally typed 'fall' instead of 'look' ... I need medication or something ...)

That was a North / Jiggetts thing mainly I believe. I don't remember the origin but I always assumed it was a semi-Harry Caray reference to how he'd say "Hey" all the time.

It was used as a greeting for most callers instead of "Hello" as I recall.

Long before ABC Radio bought WMVP and turned AM 1000 into ESPN Radio 1000 in 1998, does anyone remember that one time when Chet Coppock was talking to one of his old friends, longtime Dodgers' manager Tommy Lasorda? :? Chet was talking to Tommy, but Coppock was eating a sandwich ON THE AIR and the "AM LOOP" turned it into a promo.  Speaking of another bit that turned into a promo, there was a time when Dave Wills actually called White Sox baseball at times when John Rooney was on assignment covering MLB in the early years that FOX Sports started broadcasting in the mid '90s. Wills, now the radio voice of the Tampa Bay Rays, I remember called a White Sox homer at Boston's Fenway Park and got choked up as he called it in the 9th inning to a point where longtime LOOP Production Director Matt Bisbee turned it into a promo for AM 1000's coverage of the Sox in the '90s.

...when Tom Shaer was doing the twenty second shot clock and a caller's shot was interrupted pre-maturely or something. John "Shakey" Ciuntres got on the mic and said "Well give him a clean COCK again"....Uh huh huh, yeah....that was pretty cool. 8)

There actually used to be a cart for that bit of radio magic.
