Walter Cronkite was quite the news icon, anchoring the "CBS Evening News" long before Dan Rather in 1981 and Katie Couric right now. It seems hard to believe, but Walter replaced another CBS News veteran, Douglas Edwards, of the network's signature dinner hour newscast in 1962 until he retired in '81. In addition to all the stories he covered, Walter was once even more trusted than the President of the United States way back in 1972. There will NEVER be another newsman more trusted than Mr. Cronkite...NEVER!

That 1972 survey I mentioned was legit, and one of the many things mentioned in all the coverage last night concerning Walter Cronkite's death. By the way, CBS News will pre-empt "60 Minutes" tomorrow night to air a special called "That's The Way It Was". Current "CBS Evening News" anchor Katie Couric, "60 Minutes" executive producer/creator Don Hewitt, veteran "60" correspondents Mike Wallace & Morley Safer, President Barack Obama, plus actors George Clooney & Robin Williams will all talk about Cronkite's legacy in the special airing at 6p tomorrow night on CBS2HD & WBBM Newsradio 780.
