i'm not dissing iron maiden!
if anything, it's a feeble attempt to showcase my old schoolness....

i had that poster on my wall as a yout!
and still have the peace of mind TAPE in my collection.

Image

btw....at the tender age of 12, at alpine valley, i saw the seventh son of a seventh son tour in 1987 with megadeth opening for their so far so good so what album.
got bruce dickinson's attention at some point....
i think he was surprised to see a kid in the 12th row, more than anything else.

you happy for me?

Saw them on Navy Peir @ Chicago fest. Nico was playing Clive Burr's kit with double kicks.

Saw them on the first US leg of Powerslave in Toledo OH.

Saw 'em again in '87 @ Rosemeisen...

I too am a fan, saw them open for Priest on the Screaming for Vengeance Tour, with Axe as the opener (one hit wonder: Rock and Roll Party in the Streets).

I read that Clive Burr isn't doing so well - some kind of debilitating disease.

Yo Ryan - thanks for the recap...interesting stuff. Who did M J and H each have in their own foursome?

Yo Mr. Doug - the coolest thing about a Slayer show is that they're doing the same exact thing now that they were doing in 1986. Wouldn't work for any other band. By the way, who's playing drums for them these days?

Yo Mr. Bigfan - can you add a Music category to the MISC dept? I dig that some of you cats like to talk music... Thank you.

Anyone seen Michael Bolton lately?

I'll be honest with you, I love his music, I do, I'm a Michael Bolton fan. For my money, it doesn't get any better than when he sings 'When a Man Loves a Woman'.

Might as well throw a gay thread in along with the music thread there Big Fan ..

The dumbest thing I've seen in years was David Lee Roth doing Van Halen tunes with blue grass musicians..I sat there with my jaw to the ground.. It was like Metallica doing Hip-Hop.

Johnny-Cakes is the love child of James Hetfield and Morgan Spurlock.

I got a CD called Fade To Bluegrass as a gag gift a few years ago. It's a band named Iron Horse doing bluegrass covers of Metallica songs. It's funny as f*ck. There's nothing like hearing The Four Horseman played on a banjo.

most of the "sound" that metallica, as well as other bands get, is from the guitar itself. he may play strats in concert, but i believe kirk hammet records his solos on albums with a gibson les paul- much tougher sound than strats.

ACDC sound comes from those unbelievably thick necked Gibson SG, not so much from angus' playing. he does have something to do with it, but if angus recorded with a strat, im willing bet that the song he was playing would just sound "off."

the same can be said for pete townshend with his SG, jimmy page with his les paul, bb king with lucielle, and clapton with his strat. all unique sounds, all unique guitars.

Everytime there is a music discussion it's amazing to see and read all the stuff everyone the board knows about music. Let's start some music threads in spam. The drummer discussion was great last time.

the tapping part of the one solo is the easiest part to play....and my gear was shit in 1988....
plus, kirk uses a the pick edge when he does tapping parts.
i've seen him play that solo on both an esp les paul and a fender strat, as well as an explorer.

i'd agree with most of that statement frank.....the amp does have a bit of an effect on the sound.
i.e. mesa's and marshalls do not sound the same...
but, yeah a esp explorer versus a fender strat through the same amp will yield very different results in tone.

this is true. page got his sound live by playing through stacks and stacks of marshall's. amps do come into play, but i think the guitar does more so- especially on the album. nowadays, you can add any affect to a song in post production that you cant get on your amp.

correct me if im wrong, but doesnt kirk use his pinky and ring finger to fingerpick certain notes in that 'one' solo?

that's the thing, you can turn one knob and get a completely different sound.

Mr. MUScholar21 - That was a solid reference to "Office Space." You got at least one laff outta that post.

Anyway, back to the tablature chatter.

Which hit songs of Floyd's did he play on?

Was he the Pete Best of Pink Floyd?

Barrett wrote nearly every song on their debut album, Pipers At The Gates Of Dawn. Mental health and drug problems knocked him out of the band in '68. That's when David Gilmour joined the group. His first of two solo albums (from 1970) is pretty amazing and remains a cult classic. While certainly no Pete Best, he did live most of the rest of his life in obscurity.
