EM, very well written review! But right now, Mac's show is the only sports talk I even listen to on a semi-regular basis. I used to listen to the SCORE all day not too long ago.
It was the days of North,Murph & B&B. Because of Bernstein "playing" the listening audience with some anti-majority opinion to get them frothing at the mouth and call in,I can no longer listen to that show. Mully & Hanley are too vanilla, but I don't dislike them.
So that leaves Mac & Meat. They are doing fine, but I see some of the points made on this board regarding this show, also.

I agree

I think the show isn't a bad listen. The only problem is that it really hasn't made that much improvement since it's inception in my eyes. Today was brutal with the Bears colors discussions etc.

I'm hoping football season is where it'll take off.

That doesn't really cut it in a town with two MLB teams, NBA, NHL, Division I college basketball . . .

If Mac can only do well talking football, than make him the part-time host of a nightly Bears show during the football months or something.

I am a 20 year member of the MAC ALS. He has always been my favorite sports radio host. When it was announced that Mac was going back to WSCR, I couldnt wait for his return. The Score lineup needed to be revamped & this was a chance to do just that.
The day Mac announced Spiegel as his co-host I knew it was a big mistake. Meat may be a friend of Macs, but friends aren't always good to work with. I am guilty of still listening to the Mac show even though I cant stand it. My many years of being a Mac fan still draws me in in hopes of a good show...which never happens. If this show continues to suck then Mac & Mitch will be forced to replace Meatpants, at which point I certainly hope Jason Goff would get some consideration.

I agree. None of us should ever mention his name again! At some point we wont need to.

Hey ScoreKirk - where do you stand on Meatpants? Are you a fan of his being paired with Mac?

My listening concluded with the appearance of their fantasy football "expert", Paul Charchian, whose radio persona can only be likened to that of a screaming, pustulant elf. Years ago, didn't Mac always make fun of Harry's Fantasy Island show and say that fantasy football talk was the topic that made him push the button faster than anything on radio?

Or was I listening to my imaginary radio back then?

I agree Killer V/Pappy.

It's been echoed already, I keep listening because I was a big MJH fan and was hoping for a similar product over here. I'm going to keep listening, but the product needs to improve soon.

I can't listen to this either. I try every once in awhile. It seems to me that neither know much about sports. I know that Mac has the reputation for knowing his stuff but it doesn't translate to the show. Matt S comes across as more of a "voice" guy that is trying to be something he's not.

They both sound like they are trying to be the next Billy Mays, with the shouting & yelling.
And why is it that I never find myself laughing when they laugh? Maybe its just not as funny as they make it seem?

Today's show was lack luster at best and I thought the segment about the the Cubs fans boycotting was lame and is NOT Dan Mcneil radio. That's something you would hear on the old Harry and Spike show!!

Im as confused as you guys as to where he is trying to take this show. I don't think the show is well produced either and I also think it was a mistake by Dan not to push for Jurko to join him .To be fair the Bernstein show yesterday was along the same lines of lameness as todays show was. I just don't know what is missing from this show and I like Meatpants but maybe a thrid guy would bring the show up a level or two.

When Dan was with Jiggs I could not listen and this show is above that by far but Dan was at his best with Terry Boers and at his peak with Jurko and Harry. I think his ego might be taking a step back and saying , maybe it's not all about me.

C'mon, guys. Just a few more miles logged here and this show will be great!
[9/2: Took off 0900. Much turbulence as Co-Pilot Spiegel and I tried to get Cub & Sox fans to wear Bear colors to Wrigley tomorrow. More roughness as we discussed Cutler photos with Flight Attendant Sayers. Bad landing as we took her in early today with shouting fantasy guy. Up again tomorrow.]

I was a big fan of the MJH show. I gave Mac's new show a listen the first few weeks and while I wasn't appalled, I wasn't overly enthused either. I listened to Meat over the weekend on Hit N Run and liked the show. Personally, though, I go through phases with sports radio where I really just can't listen to anybody doing it and the past 2 months have been that for me. The few times I've listened to anybody have annoyed me more than entertained me as my recent B&B experience showed.

But, the Cubs blow and I consume Sox talk only to get to the next topic so it's not a great radio time for me. I can't count on college football talk from anybody so I get that somewhere else.

I don't know if Mac's show is any good yet but, as was mentioned, when the Bears tackle in anger, I'll want to hear some talk about it. That's when I'll make my determination on the quality of their show since I'll definitely have things I'll want to hear discussed and I'll see if I go there to hear them discussed. I will at first. It's up to them if I continue to do so.

Thanks for all the input from everyone. It seems to me that this is just a lazy show. I thought Mac got lazy the last year or two of MJH and apparently this is the new Mac. Nothing has changed. I think it's hard to put all the blame on Spiegel for what everyone seems to describe as a lackluster show.
The same fake laughter, the same talk about Mac, same parodies, same lame jokes, -nothing new, nothing fresh. Little wonder some people called him north jr a few months ago. they both talked a good game about their new shows, but both put the same old shit on the air in the new gigs. Kind of sad.

How easy is it to change your personality? The way you talk, the subjects you bring up,etc.
I NEVER listened to Mac on MVP. That may be why I like him now. It sounds fresh to me.
Everybody is a critic though. I have respect for those who try it,it can't be easy talking for 4/5 hours 5 days a week.

how difficult it is or how much one respects the medium matters little in terms of product.

i find myself not spending enough time actually working when I listen to talk radio during the day. i need to hit budgets and can't do that while posting here or listening to why the baseball teams are shit.
i can listen to the same album on repeat 5 times during the regular work day at a low enough volume to not have it affect that.

i don't like the time slot. daytime radio has always been on the "goofy" side going back to the Loop days...which was great when i was 16.
I listen when I'm in the car, but I don't know.

As a comparison to Dr. Ken's post....I'm a little burnt-out on talk radio in general.

maybe football will help.

You still get a good bit of the borderline insane Southerners talkin' 'bout 'Bama and full-on insane recruiting details but you get a bunch of good info about colleges from coast to coast.

I just love 3 pages of why someone cant listen.

The only thing I COULD NOT listen to was that Squelching Ear Ringing Medication Commercial.

Others things I might not like (Steve Stone)

I NEVER listened to him on WMVP either, and I don't like him now (did like him back in the HFC days) and it does not sound fresh to me. I really don't respect a guy who has been in the "biz" for as many years as he has, and can't figure out a way to do an entertaining show. Again, his obsession with himself is really similar to Mr. North (at least for me).

There is no doubt that you reach a saturation point when listening/viewing something quite a bit ... the problem here is that no matter how much time I take off from trying to listen to this show, it still sounds bad to me. Perhaps it's the formulaic local sports radio show sound (f'd out bumper music, song parodies, extended dips into their personal lives as if the ENTIRE audience is dying to know what they're up to "off the air", etc). Maybe Dan, like North, was just in the right place at the right time when the Score fired up and is simply unable to evolve his show and resorts to worn out bits/production qualities because that's what he thinks works?

Again, I don't have the answer but after a few months on the air together it simply sounds like these two "radio pros" really have no idea what makes for good radio and I'm no longer interested in trying to hang in there with them. And, call me dramatic if you'd like, but the guy who spends so much time groping his fanbase ALSO telling them to PTFB (when they don't like what they hear) simply rubs me the wrong way.

With that, I'll only be clicking back in this form to see how Dan tries to explain away the next ratings book/trend when he and his wonderful partner once again get their asses handed to them.

I would understand still listening to the show if there was nothing else on...but the Tom and Marc show is good.

Why not just listen to that?
