Looks as if we are going to lose another legendary broadcaster...

Legendary announcer Harwell says he has incurable cancer
Sep. 4, 2009
CBSSports.com wire reports

Longtime broadcaster Ernie Harwell, who spent 42 of his 55 years as a broadcaster calling Detroit Tigers games, has been diagnosed with an incurable cancer, several media outlets reported Thursday.

The 91-year-old Harwell, who was in the Tigers' broadcast booth from 1960 until he retired in 2002, remains upbeat after an inoperable tumor was found in the area of the bile duct.

• Miller: A voice to be cherished
Harwell tells the Detroit Free Press: "We don't know how long this lasts. It could be a year, it could be much less than a year, much less than a half a year. Who knows? Whatever's in store, I'm ready for a new adventure. That's the way I look at it."

Harwell was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981 and the Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame in 1989.

I know who he is but having lived in the Chicago area my whole life, I never got the chance to listen to him, other than when he guested on a national broadcast. But, reading about his health condition, it saddens me because it reminds me of when local broadcasters died and how a little bit of my youth went with them. Getting older sucks.

The only positive is that he's lived 91 years, which is awesome. I doubt I'll ever see that age.

(And now back to my bacon and cheese omelette, already in progress...)

I believe he is pretty prominently featured on one of Pat Hughes CD's that he made where he put together clips from great broadcasters over the years. I'm not a Tigers fan, but to them it's the equivalent of losing Harry or Jack.

I've never listened to one of Pat's CDs. I can't imagine why I ever would, though it might be a cool soundtrack for when things get hoppin' in the boudoir...

"Back, back, back...HEY HEY!! A home run!!! Whooo boy!!! A solo shot!!!"

And for those moments when things don't go off as planned:

"OH NO!" - Santo. "He dropped the ball" - Hughes.

I can hear Santo saying it now when I am less than my best in action:

"This just can't keep happening. It just can't"....
