Nah, Ditka is and has always been about the money. Did you hear the first few minutes of today's interview with S&R? It was just a big circle jerk with Sean as the ringleader. This segment is going to be brutal with all 3 of them talking over each other constantly.

It's obviously about the money a little bit. But not really. Ditka has all the money in the world at this point in his life. I doubt a weekly 1 hour radio show will put him in a higher tax bracket.

It's really more so the fact that Ditka works for ESPN Bristol. Once Ditka got that job the Score dumped him. He appeared weekly with Mike and Mike last year against Pappy. Whatever money he gets from the show is enhanced because he can display his Restaurant once a week with the show. Free advertisement. But Ditka has enough money and that's more important to his partners then him. But I bet they encouraged him to do a show from his restaraunt if he could.

You gotta be kidding me Beardown... The Score dumped Ditka? Hardly.

Ditka got a new contract from ESPN after CBS dumped him, that contract included his participation on ESPNRadio on Sundays during the NFL games - and also visits with Mike and Mike. That my friend is Ditka dumping the Score.

Then again, his last stint with The Score was a Thursday show with Rick TeaBagger, Hood and Buffone. And even the presence of Da Coach couldn't help that trainwreck of a show led by the deep thinking Rick TeaBagger.

Am I the only Chicagoan that hates Da Coach. I give the 85 defense and Buddy Ryan more credit then I do Ditka. I was only 3 when they won so that team dsoesn't mean as much to me as many others. But the Ditka I remember is getting into a fist fight trying to draft Zorich in the first round and then running the Saints into the ground with the Williams trade. Plus people seem to hate Phil Jackson in this town and whenever you say he was a good coach people say he had Jordan and was a cocky asshole. But Coach had arguably the greatest defense in NFL history for two straight years and only won one Super Bowl and he was a pompus asshole and still is. Plus I prefer the stoned, laid back asshole to that of the slicked back hair, temper of a spoiled brat asshole.

Like what?

And I also orgot to mention that Ditka is brutal on ESPN, does he even watch the games. When he was on Monday mornings with either Sailsbury or Iving, it was awful, smoking crack doesnt kill as many brain cells as watching that shit. And the whole tough guy act at this point is just sad. Plus, I hate to bring politics into the mix, but any guy that admits to agreeing with 99% of what Alan Keyes says, is a fucking twat.

ditka made a conscious decision to be a caricature of himself, he does do some good things, like for Misrecordia. If you understand it, you see why he is horrible. He was an ok coach, best coaching performances with the late 80's bears, the 85 team could win with Wanny coaching.

I don't get it either. Ditka is pretty much just a drunken old man to me and I can't understand what the hell he's talking about half the time. I was only 5 years old when the Bears won the big one so I don't really have any emotional attachment to Ditka or that '85 team. Can somebody explain what the big deal is?

the big deal is that you guys are too young to have fully appreciated the bears super bowl run. i was all of 10, but i remember it clearly. it was ditka mania in this city. the first bears superbowl coach. the excess of the early 80s....black and blues brothers posters, junkyard dogs, "Fridge-mania" Ditka doing commercials for de-icer or whatever...
hard to explain....it was just everywhere.

I just want to thank this thread for making me feel real fucking old.

The '85 Bears were THE biggest thing in the history of Chicago sports. Bigger than 6 Bulls titles, bigger than the Sox WS. It was a 19 week carnival, and as a testosterone filled 15 year old, it was incredible. Damn you little whippersnapper bastards.

Being 3 years old I dont remember a thing. However, it is the same way that Ozzie will be thought of in 20 years. You bring a championship to a city in need of one, especially this one, you will forever be remembered.

well think of it this way, why does everyone like ozzie guillen? they are practically the same coaches given their respective sports. i know i would say that ozzie is a better coach, but we need to remember that he only won one sp far, and so did ditka.

ditka also owns the areana league team right? i thought they won last year? i mean the guy has been an icon for the city's sports aspect for many years. ozzie will be too. its not hard for me to see why both are so loved in this town. most northern illinois seems to like the outspoken, raw type of personality for a manager. its the 'chicago way' right?

Ditka is an orange faced, cigar chomping cartoon. He's lousy on the radio because he can't speak well. He's often disinterested. He spwews cliches in a rat-a-tat fashion. He lives in the past more then any coward or loser I've met. I predict he will suffer a massive heart attack in the next 2 years.

I go away for a few days and suddenly the board takes on collective insanity. I can appreciate what has been said about Ditka the commentator.

As far as Ditka the coach, well, I feel is better that ignorance is only defeated when an individual attains a personal epiphany. Do a little research on the Bears between Halas and Ditka. Then do a little research on the Bears post Ditka. Now compare those two periods with the Ditka years. Take a look at the Bears post Buddy as a little extra credit.

You will see that there have been several generations that have passed since halas was coach. Since that time there has been only one period of sustained excellence by this team. Ditka took a very bad team and it soon became a very good team...and it remained a very good team.

Right on.

I already felt the generation gap because of guys who don't remember the 85 Bears, but it's a thousand times moreso when they question what the big deal was, or think the whole thing must have been really dumb.

Youngins, you have not, and may not ever, experience anything like that 85 season. Ditka may be all the things you say about him today, but 1985 gives him a lifetime pass to do and be whatever the hell he wants.

I respect the hell out of the job Ditka did with the Bears in the 80's. My commentary on him was about what he has become. He's just a cartoon looking for the next pay check now a days. That's all. He adds nothing with his commentary on TV or the radio. He's just living on his past. More power to him but I don't have to like him for it.

Ditka unequivocally did what nobody has done before or since--he was the head coach on a 1985 Chicago Bear Super Bowl-winning (or even Super Bowl-appearng team). He no doubt benefitted from Buddy Ryan's defensive plans, and especially from spectacular drafting.

Since that season, however, it's all been downhill. He lost much of the team by discouraging their endorsement opportunities while he himself would sell anything if the money was right, by referring to the 1987 strike-breakers as the "Real Bears," by the DUI (in 1989, if I recall).

Since his dismissal from the Bears, he has amassed a small fortune from various broadcasting deals, and bully for him. However, much of his commentary is ill-informed (T.O. is NOT 35), cliched, or otherwise empty. His tenure in New Orleans was eminently forgettable, even if one wants to blame Tom Benson for much of that.

There are many guys (some who played, and a few who didn't) who are much better football commentators.

I never said anything like this. I get that it was important, but it's time to move on. It's like all the tributes to Tupac and Biggie, it's been done a million times, move on. Ditka was great in '85, but it's '06 now. I'm not dying to hear the next Stones album just because 'Let It Bleed' was arguably the greatest album of all time, since then they've put out so much crap that I know I wont get what I once did.
