Jaws is just keeping the seat warm until Brett Favre really retires.

I also thought Golic did a damn good job.

Actually, relatively speaking, this is a bit of a golden age in NFL broadcasting. The MNF booth has been excellent IMO, and I'm a big fan of Collinsworth on Sunday Nights. Billick on Fox is fantastic. I think Baldinger is gone. All in all, good trends.

Irish Boy, You like the Monday Night Crew, the problem is this could be there last year together, because Gruden will try to get back in coaching. Since you like Golic, there was something is USA Today a couple of weeks ago that Golic wanted to be in the Booth. Also, on the Danny Mac show, Mike Florio from profootballtalk, said there are rumors to get the Mike and Mike guys in the booth. If Gruden goes, they may start with Golic, then replace Tirico with Greenberg, I would like anybody in there besides Tirico.

So an early thought, next year's Monday night booth, Greenberg, Golic, and Jaworski.

Yeah, you're right that I wouldn't count on Gruden being there for long. And maybe Golic would get old if I heard him too much. But I could go for the booth you just mentioned; I have no particular attachment to Tirico, and at the very least, Greenberg and Golic wouldn't need any time to establish "chemistry".

Golic = change the channel

Maybe I'm biased because I think the morning show sucks but I have no use for Golic on MNF.

Boilermaker, no need to worry. You won't have Golic, Mike Greenberg or Steve Young working the "MNF" booth anymore this season. It was a onetime deal, especially because there aren't any doubleheaders beyond the first week and there are few teams that play in multi-use stadiums anymore...

the dichotomy between Jaws and Gruden is cool. Jaws, played QB in the NFL. Gruden, played backup QB in college and coached Steve Young, Brett Favre, Donovan McNabb, Rich Gannon....

There's some good stuff written on ESPN.com from their ombudsman about the MNF announcers...it seems that he didn't enjoy the Mike & Mike group but likes the Tirico/Jaws/Gruden booth. My favorite excerpt:

ESPN Ombudsman wrote:
A classic case in point was this week's opening-night double-header on MNF -- two exciting finishes handled in totally different ways. Coming from behind, the Chargers scored a TD in the final minute to beat the Raiders. The final dramatic drive was covered by non-stop hyperkinetic chattering in the booth, filled with more opinion than relevant information. The announcers excitedly talked over the top of each other at times, leaving no room for the climactic moments to breathe.

On the other hand, Tirico, Jaworski and Gruden's handling of the dramatic finish of the Buffalo-New England game was first-rate. The play-by-play was totally controlled, hitting the key points. Both analysts, judicious in their comments, never strayed from the intensity of the moment. All were enthusiastic, yet restrained -- a tough order when the adrenalin is flowing as strongly in the booth as it is on the field. The trio let the drama build and unfold with intentional moments of silence that enhanced the tension. When the Patriots scored the winning touchdown, there was a long pause in the booth -- allowing the audience to enjoy the pandemonium around the stadium. This doesn't happen by accident. It was a conscious choice made by the booth and the truck, and it was excellently executed.

I didn't get that sense from the Mike and Mike broadcast. Then again, I felt that when they were talking they were doing a generally good job of keeping everything interesting, so maybe I didn't notice. Also, it was a booth assembled for one broadcast; some of the edges are going to be rough (flight hours and all that).

Gruden is a natural. He is a great listen & he is already my favorite analyst by far. Jaws on the other hand sounds like he is trying too hard. Tirico is just ok.
