Oct 4 is the final day.

not sure if the owners should be Douchebagged for not being able to reconcile their differences to keep the place open or for selling to highest bidders for the last rides.

Knowing how hard it is to get financing for anything these days in the commercial world, I am not sure they are making a wise move if they think a developer is going to really close on this.

The next shoe dropping in the economy is the commerical market. Office properties will be falling fast, with very little fan fare because it is not the heart felt media story a families home is, but they are expecting double the defaults on commercial loans in the year.

No way......went for the first time about a month ago with the wife and kids.

That is a slice of Americana. Hand painted rides.......old fashioned fun.

The closing is a shame.

I honest to God thought this was going to be about the banning of Juggs.

I was into the 3rd paragraph before I realized that is not what bigfan was talking about.

I have fond memories of the Kiddieland that was in Schererville. Now it's just a different slice of Americana....White Castle, Taco Bell, Hooters, Radio Shack and a giant parking lot. :(

Can't complain too much....love the pink volcano taco. :eye: :cheese:

We went yesterday and might go the closing weekend. It's really great for little little ones or ages 2-8 that can't really do great america. The kids loved it. We'd go once a year or so when I was little. It was packed yesterday. If you are going to go, go really early and buy tickets in advance.

Kiddieland in Melrose Park was a big part of SHARK's childhood growing up. I remember riding the train, going on the roller coasters, having cotton candy and having as much fun as a kid could have. I remember "190 North" did a feature story one Sunday night before it was revealed the park is closing its doors for good.

I thought I remembered going a few years ago to their "Final Season" as well.

....but then again, my kids are old enough to force upon me the misery that is Six Flags & Disney so....

True story. Had a no hitter going in the EP little leagues at the EP high school the day that it burned down. Because of the smoke, they cancelled the game in the fifth and never got my no-hitter.

I not only remember Polk Bros. having a store I believe where Menards(!) now stands across the street, and not far from Kiddieland, but I could've sworn they had a bunch of stores in the Chicago area a long, long time ago...

The folks might take The Tora there sunday if the weather holds up to see George.
We went a few weeks back for my dad's birthday and when The Tora learned that it was closing she looks at me and asked why? Well I can't BS her and I told her like it is..."princess some people are just dbags and don't like kids, not to mention are greedy and want to build a parking lot and take away the fun from the kids". She had fun riding the train (I think she went 3 or 4 times) and even made the rollar coaster.
I had sooooo much fun there as a kid and santa's village as well and when I found out I was going to have a little one I was happy that I could take her to some of the places i loved as a child. Wow was I dissapointed when santa's village closed and that is just like two hollars over, next kiddieland will close, what else will they take away from me?

Redneckmommy, it's the economy, my friend. Something tells me we won't be seeing that guy that says "Six Flags. More flags. More fun." with news this summer that they recently filed for bankruptcy... :(

The one at 85th & Cottage Grove was the one we went to...if Sears' price was too high for the deep freezer, color TV, etc..

That store was made only greater by the fact that you could negotiate down the retail price. My first "man"-lesson came watching my dad get us a floor model color tv, with a remote

I was sooo proud

I think it is more greed to build condo's and more non essential big box stores, especially in that area.

The Weather Channel's Jim Cantore is in the middle of that flooding...The Tour Championship this weekend for the PGA Tour could also be in serious trouble...HLN's Rafer Weigel showed how awful that course in suburban Atlanta looked on "Morning Express w/Robin Meade" today...Talk about worse for wear!

I think Santa's Village was cooler than Kiddieland. For people who like the kid stuff there's always the Wisconsin Dells.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polk_Brothers

Quote:
Polk Brothers was a large home appliance and electronics retailer in Chicago, Illinois that had 17 stores in the region at its peak in the 1980s.

One of the original discounters, Polk Bros. Inc. was founded by Sol Polk on the Northwest Side in the Portage Park community area of Chicago in 1935. The first outlet was on Central Avenue under the name Central Appliance and Furniture at 3334 N. Central Avenue. Brothers Sol, Sam, Harry, David and Morris and their sister, Ghisella "Goldie" Bachmann, ran the business, which was renamed Polk Brothers in 1946. By the 1960s, there were two dozen or more family members including uncles, cousins, and in-laws, working in various departments of the company, which became one of the biggest appliance retailers in the United States at a time when the industry was very fragmented.

Polk Bros. was the dominating electronics/appliance retailer in the Chicago market through the 1980s. The chain was known for its aggressive "let's make a deal" salesmen who would pair off with customers as they came in the door. It was an industry leader in innovative merchandising and was chosen to be the first retailer in the nation to sell color televisions and microwave ovens.

In the 1950s and 1960s, when most appliances and stereos were bought at department stores at full price, Polk Bros. pioneered the art of discounting. "The motto was that no customer walks out of the store without buying at least something," recalls Howard Polk. "Whatever it took to make a deal, we gave it to them." The company's influence lives on at Wal-Mart and other chains that advertise, as Polk Bros. did, the lowest prices anywhere.

Owner Sol Polk was considered a master pitchman. He ran in-store promotions that offered everything from TVs to Christmas trees. Polk served as the president of the North American Retail Dealers Association (NARDA), and his innovative and flamboyant promotions of the industry's products gained him nationwide recognition. He also was frequently called on to appear at hearings on proposed industry-related legislative and regulatory hearings held by the United States Congress and federal and state agencies.

A fire during the evening of June 1, 1987 that gutted the company's warehouse and adjacent headquarters at 8311 W. North Avenue in Melrose Park put the company in financial straits, and the death a year later of 71-year-old CEO Sol Polk sent it spiraling downward. The 1990-91 recession and the arrival of new competitors such as Best Buy sealed Polk Bros.' fate.

I liked santa's village....now talk about depressing drive past that and racing rapids, the buidldings are falling apart and it looks really creepy. I also remember kiddie kingdom, for those of you over the age of 30.

Well I am going to kiddieland one last time today with the princess , we are going to see George which I think will be bitter sweet for her. I just wish it would get a last minute stay of execution, but it looks like the owner that won't renew the land lease is still going ot be a butthead about it.

There was a water park in Oak Brook that I loved. The name of it was something like Ebenezers flop and slop waterslide park.

I remember the commercial back in the day for Dispensa's Kiddie Kingdom..."Let's Go!" Redneckmommy, it's believed there's been a family feud in regards to control over the land where Kiddieland currently lies and that the two sides couldn't come to an agreement about keeping the legendary amusement park in operation beyond today. I wonder what's going to happen with that unused landspace once Kiddieland shuts down for good...
