I know he or she or it has been portrayed by many fine actors over the years, but who was the best? The first two who come to mind for me are Viggo Mortensen and Robert De Niro.

The very versatile Viggo (loved him in Carlito's Was as Lalin) did a compelling job in The Prophecy. Obviously everyone will remember Christopher Walken's turn as Gabriel, but Mortensen more than held his own with his portrayal of the desolate one. The Prophecy was a good movie that could have been great. It was a great concept but like most movies the execution of the idea just wasn't up to snuff. Virginia Madsen's poor acting didn't help things.

De Niro as Louis Cyphre in the criminally underrated Angel Heart probably would top my list. His performance is exquisite and creepy at the same time. When he's eating the boiled egg and then later sitting in a church admonishing Mickey Rourke for his course language, well that's some good acting right there. Angel Heart is a fine film that deserves to be seen by more people.

I know I'm missing countless others, but these two stand out the most at the moment.

Nope these are #1 and #2 in that order...Plus Angel Heart has Mickey Rourke and a young Lisa Bonet. THe first few Prophecy flix were great but by the end I just didn't get it...

That's on a whole nother level right there. That begs the question, would Curry's turn as Pennywise count too or was he just the personification of evil much like Dan Halen?

The overall suckiness of the movie combined with Nic Cage's hair piece take major points away from Fonda's performance.

You must be a Coppola, that's the only logical explanation.

I'm still scarred by the sight of Gabriel Byrne having a threesome with a mother and daughter in END OF DAYS, and then the mother/daugher morphing into one satanic looking person during the act.

But I agree, DeNiro and Pacino were also great.

That's cool. I think Eric Roberts is great and by far the most talented of the Roberts family actors and I catch flak for it all the time.

Yeah that's always first in my argument followed closely by Runaway Train, Star 80. And I love his turn as Sal Maroni in The Dark Knight. Nobody ever said "Take it up with the Joker" cooler than Roberts did.
