Can the question be answered? Musical tastes will sway one's decision, but is there a consensus out there amongst movies lovers and music lovers? Can you have a favorite in both categories? Maybe one you enjoy musically, while the other just fits the film perfectly. I've not included soundtracks from musicals, such as Grease, The Wiz, Beauty & The Beast, Across The Universe, Evita etc... Evita I know, but damn Banderas can sing, recognize.

In no particular order, here are some of my favorites.

Shaft - A great album on its own, the soundtrack also captured the tone of the movie so well. The main theme sticks out to most people, but there's also some great music on the entire double LP. Isaac Hayes will forever get props for his work on this piece of art.

American Graffiti - The amount of material on this soundtrack is unbelievable. From Buddy Holly to Fats Domino to The Beach Boys to Chuck Berry, you just can't go wrong with this effort. I doubt a compilation from so many heavy hitters of their time could come together today. Again, this music fit perfectly with the movie.

Blade Runner - A futuristic marvel the film is, as is the soundtrack by one of the all time greats; Vangelis. The music is enchanting and off the wall all at the same time. There's been so many editions released over the years it's hard to keep up. If you're a Vangelis fan, try and pick up the Esper Edition which I believe came out in 01 or 02.

Bulworth - If you're a Hip Hop/Rap fan then you know all about this one. The RZA's "The Chase" and Cappadonna's "Run" alone are worth checking this one out. Bulworth itself is an underrated movie, and the soundtrack adds so much to the scenery and scenarios laid out in the film. It's fun listening and watching to this knowing it was all Warren Beatty's idea.

Judgement Night - The ultimate mash up soundtrack. Some great tracks on here, my personal favorite being "I Love You Mary Jane" with Sonic Youth and Cypress Hill. I was still in a closed minded state when it came to music back then and this album helped me open up and realize there was more than just Rap and House music out there.

Alexander - The movie is reviled by some and loved by others, but I don't think the music can be disputed. I fall into the category of loving the film so maybe I'm a bit biased but I can't get enough of this instrumental soundtrack. I think being into history amps up the enjoyment, and again my Vangelis jones also factors in. If you didn't like the movie, give it a second chance. Check out the directors cut and take in the music along with the pictures.

Ocean's 12 - I'm a big fan of all the Oceans movies and soundtracks but 12 is my favorite. The opening scene which uses L'appuntamento is outstanding. The A La Menthe (Laser Dance) is one of my all time favorite beats. French Hip Hop, who knew? I discovered David Holmes with Ocean's 11 but really came to appreciate him with 12. The Ocean's movies also made me do a complete 180 on Clooney. I hated him because of the whole Batman & Robin fiasco, but now I'm head of GC fan club.

Kingdom of Heaven - Another period piece which takes quite a few historical liberties but delivers nonetheless in the movie making and soundtrack department. There are some great scenes which are greatly enhanced by the music. The funeral sequence for Edward Norton's King Baldwin IV is pure cinematic poetry with the inclusion of "Vide Cor Meum" which I consider to be the best piece of operatic music ever. Originally it was featured in Ridley Scott's Hannibal, but it fits so much better here. If you've never seen it, google the scene, it's that good.

O Brother Where Art Thou - The Soggy Bottom Boys get the job done. Nuff said.

I thought the use of Melanie's Brand New Key for Rollergirl was great. Blow's music was well used, Blinded By The Light never sounded better. Almost Famous speaks for itself.

Saturday Night Fever - Whether you liked Disco or not, there's no denying the greatness of this album. The Bee Gees nailed the tone and feel of a film arguably better than anyone ever has. Even there throwaway stuff like "If I Can't Have You" is top notch with Yvonne Eilman on the vocals. Disco Inferno, I don't care how hardcore you think you are, when in private if this jam plays you're moving. Not to mention Walter Murphy's "A Fifth of Beethoven", I dare you not to like that song.

also, an underrated movie and album that hopefully will find a major cult following sometime, but "A Mighty Wind" is a fantastic soundtrack. I also got to see a live performance by all the "bands"; it was amazing seeing the likes of Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, Catherine O'Hara, Parker Posey, Christopher Guest, and Eugene Levy up close in person. They all stayed in character, too.

loved it when levy & o'hara played "a kiss at the end of the rainbow" at the 2004 oscars, *as mitch & mickey*.

Holy Crap! I can't even imagine seeing a live performance! A Mighty Wind definitely gets put on the list. I can just look at any of those guys or just think of something and laugh. Best in Show should be mandatory viewing for all americans. O'Hara was on Curb not too long ago and was great as the "crazy" sister.

I saw Tap on Colbert sometime in the summer and they were plugging a video or dvd or something, Stonehenge: ‘Tis a Magical Place. Anyone see that...?

Warriors: qualifies for me. Only 1 standout tune, In the City by Joe Walsh, but for me the music with each scene was pretty cool.
Harold and Maud: with Cat Stevens tunes always was good to me. Similar in nature to the aforementioned Graduate and Simon/Garfunkel.

My favorite soundtrack to get would be the final song of each Sopranos episode. They always had a known (to me) or unknown tune that not only seemed to fit the scene but was cool on its own merit.
