Lovie a 5 year extension and Jerry through 2013. Well this is what we have, for better or worse, for the next 5 seasons.

I think Lovie actually signed a 4 year extension (from Bears website).

I'm neither happy nor disappointed. I do wonder what the per year number is...

My initial reaction was one of general indifference as well, Killer.

Zach said 22.5 million over four years.

Smith, Angelo sign contract extensions
By Larry Mayer

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Ensuring that their successful partnership will remain intact well into the future, Bears coach Lovie Smith and general manager Jerry Angelo both signed contract extensions Wednesday night.

Smith inked a four-year extension through the 2011 season, while Angelo signed an extension through the 2013 season. Smith had one year remaining on his original contract.

In 2006, Smith led the Bears to the Super Bowl for the first time in 21 years and guided the team to back-to-back division titles for the first time since they won five straight in 1984-88. In 2005, he was named NFL Coach of the Year after the Bears improved from 5-11 to 11-5.

Smith and his agent, Frank Bauer, approached the Bears about a long-term extension a year ago, but the team chose to wait to see if the coach would sustain the success he enjoyed in 2005.

Bauer told ESPN last week that talks had reached a stalemate and he expected Smith to return in 2007 for the final year of his contract without a new deal. But through it all, the Bears’ unflappable coach remained confident that an agreement would be reached.

Thank god. I was seriously flagging on this topic. Let the hand wringing and pulpit pounding be done.

It's about effin' time. I'm actually surprised that they ponied up. I didn't think they'd go any higher than $4M/year.

I can't wait for the first loss next year and the calls of "We pay lovie 5 million dollars a year for this?".

Sports fans always want players and coaches to get paid well, until they do, when they then turn on them and complain about it.

Sorry Sleuth, Carol Slezak is right!
The contract is conditional upon Lovie turning white.

You'll have to wait until 2009 for that. They still only pay him 1.45 next year.

I thought they kept the remaining year of contract as is, but gave 2 million signing bonus so he is making 3.45 million next year essentially.

Close. It took until 2009.

Your boy Mariotti repeatedly pounded that talking point into the ground.
