The last game seems to have changed the statistic. I just looked. The Bears must have had almost 0 YAC in the last game.

However, Marshall has 127 YAC and Stokley has 106.
Hester has 136 and Knox has 107.

The Bears only have 588 YAC now and the Broncos have 808 YAC.

Ok sorry Vegas Cub Fan, before last week the bears had more

No problem, plus remember that Orton has had much more time to throw than Cutler. Iam not being a Cutler apologist, he did have a shitty game yesterday and needs to play alot smarter!!

Bottom line is (ive been saying this for the past few years) Lovie is NOT A GOOD HEAD COACH AND IS WAY OVERPAID!! Can anyone give any reasons why they should keep Lovie around?? Not just after yesterday's trainwreck either. Thanks for your time.

Here was the breakdown as of two weeks ago.

It looks like a lot changed in the last 2 games for the Bears and 1 for Denver.

Yards After Catch have as much to do with the quality of the pass from the QB as it does with the receiver. If the QB hits a receiver in stride with a nice pass, the receiver will get more YAC. This is why the top YAC QBs include Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and newer guys this year like Matt Schaub and Joe Flacco.

Cutler's passes maybe too often require that his receivers make spectacular catches--he throws too high or almost buries the rock in the turf--and obviously if Olsen or Clark are digging balls out of the turf or making one-handed leaping grabs rather than catching the ball in stride, they aren't going to get many YAC.

Of course the top YAC QBs are those guys. They also have the most yards total. You need to look at YAC as a percentage of total yardage. An even better metric is to determine average yardage per completion minus YAC. Rerun those statistics and get back to me, buck-o.

It's also difficult to get yards after the catch when a) the receivers are getting little or no separation or b) the defense is rushing 4 and dropping 7 into coverage.

I'm not saying Cutler has made some poor throws because he has. But to single out Cutler as the reason for the YAC issues is ridiculous. After the reviewing the stats you presented, the Bears are 18th in the league in YAC for 2009. That seems to be about right, if not a little better than I anticipated, considering the mediocre receiving core.

By the way, if you really want to argue against Cutler, you're going to have to do better than a sample size of 6 games.

We don't have to have these metaphysical "would the better QB lead his WRs to more YAC" arguments. Let's look at the goddamned numbers. These QBs, in 2008, had the highest percentage of their passing yards come as YAC:

Cassel
O'Sullivan
Campbell
Favre
Losman
Palmer
Bulger
Wallace
Orton
Collins

Here's 2007:

Croyle
Testaverde
Griese
Harrington
Favre
McCown
Edwards
Lemon
Losman
McNabb

If we are using a small sample size, from 2008 to 2009, the Chicago Bears have moved from 25th to 16th in passing offense. An offense where the O-Line and receiving core have showed little, if any, improvement. The running back has slightly regressed. And the defense has shown no improvement. So the Bears are likely to be trailing in ballgames and predictably throwing the ball more.

From 2008 to 2009, the Denver Broncos dropped from 3rd to 15th in passing offense. This offense includes and O-Line and RBs that have improved, along with an already solid receiving core. They also have a highly improved defense. So Denver will be playing close games, likely leading, and will be able to better dictate the types of plays they would like to run.

Yes, the passing offense stats are going to change due to the performance of each team. But those are some significant changes. If Cutler was still in Denver, don't you think they would have a top 5 or 10 passing offense? If Orton was still here, do you really think they would significantly improve from the 25th ranked passing offense?

Thank you Old Man River. Hey Hussra, are you telling me that you would rather have Kyle "Puss Arm" Orton than the gunslinger Cutler?? If so, you are smoking some good stuff my friend.

the fact that ANY thread continues about comparisons between orton and cutler just reinforces the stereotype of the bill swerski type of bear fan.

they're not even the same kind of quarterback.

2 1st round picks and a 3rd round pick and an adequate quarterback for performances like we saw last night?

no doubt he's under pressure a lot. no excuse for stupid decision making though.

he looks like a talented gunslinger with poor game management skills and decision making skills.

heck, last year in Denver with a great O Line he still threw several pics and had a very similar QB rating as the average Orton. Lots of yards though.

The Cutler trade being good is hardly a no-brainier, given what was given up and the amount of money he's getting paid going forward.

last night in losing to the 49er's and breaking the 49er's 4 game losing streak, the Bears became the fat chick at the end of the bar at 2 am.

Well done, but you'll find the average person here does not let the facts get in the way of bitching for the sake of bitching

of course the Bears defense gives up more points per game, when Cutler's going 3 and out after 3 and out and throwing picks left and right and netting 2 yds in an entire half--that tends to lead to the other team putting up more points on the Bears defense.

And a lot of the Bears offensive production this season has been garbage time TD's and yards, e.g., the Cardinals game

Orton would be just as bad, if not worse with this team, and who the hell needs the draft picks when the GM can't draft anyone worth a damn in the early rounds anyway.

It's a lot easier to throw the ball when you have:

A) an offensive line that can block
B) a running back that can run for more than 2 yards/carry
C) wide receivers that can get open
D) a defense that can stop someone, which might allow the Bears to stop playing from behind for most of the game

That being said, there's room for improvement from everyone on that offense, including Jay.

Orton missed a game or so (in total, across a couple games) due to injury. Or else Orton might actually be keeping pace with/ahead of Cutler in Cutler's usually strong categories, like total yds.

Don't see Orton catching Cutler in the category Cutler leads the league, Interceptions.

Even when Cutler's good, it's not as beneficial to the Bears defense as Cutler's Grossman-like tendency to prefer the quick strike, go deep big play leads to quick scoring drives for the Bears (when they manage to score at all) and that puts the defense right back on the field. A good example was the Cardinals game where the Bears responded to the Cardinals initial TD with a quick, maybe 3 play drive for a TD but then Kurt Warner and the Cardinals went back out and put together a long drive to score again and wear down the Beards defense.
