At least they have upgraded the search process to avoid "Hire a coach who lies on his resume and is fired before coaching a game".

Rick, youre anti ND Bias is showing

This hasnt even approached the joke that was the Weis hire. That took waay longer. And Weis wasnt even a thought at the beggining.

If they hire Kelly, its not at all like the weis one becuase it was on their short list.

Meyer(pipedream)
Stoops (not realistic)
Kelly (probably hired)

To be like the Weis hire, Kelly, Edzel, and two more people would have to say no. Then ND would go after someone who wasnt previously mentioned under the guise of searching for "one of their own"

Then, itll be like the Weis hire.

I don't know that is Notre Dame-specific. That's pretty much exactly how the Michigan coaching search went as well; Les Miles was rumored for months but dropped out. Then the Kirk Ferentz/Greg Schiano types were rumored but all dropped out. Then Rich Rodriguez kind of appeared out of nowhere.

Then again, Notre Dame probably hopes their search turns out a little bit better.

Ferentz is such a tease. Every year he's up for huge jobs. What has he done? I understand he's got a successful program, but its not like he won a National Title

Why the Kirk love?

I said it was becoming like the Weis hire. It still isn't there.

Meyer, Stoops, Gruden all were names thrown out. At least 2 of those turned down Notre Dame. Gruden may never have been offered but I'm pretty sure that if he wanted the job he'd get it.
I don't know what happened with Harbaugh but he is certainly a more attractive candidate than Edsal.
Kelly seemed like the "can't miss" candidate but I'm starting to get a sense that Notre Dame may have actually soured on him.

What if it's not Edsal then? I think if it's not Edsal or Kelly then they've got a Charlie Weis situation.

You would think they would have a candidate targeted after the Navy loss.
If they didn't, they are fucking up again.

I really hope Randy Edsall gets the job if only for the storyline.

Randy Edsall would basically do the equivalent of beating the crap out of Charlie Weis and then going and sleeping with his girlfriend.

Ok well I guess I misunderstood your statement.

The difference I think is that Meyer and Gruden were never really considered likely. Last time Meyer was all but penciled in when the search began.

As the resident Hawkeye apologist, here's why:
- 11 years with Iowa, lifetime mark of 80-55 overall with a 49-39 Big ten record (This after starting at Iowa 4-19, 3-13 Big Ten)
- Shared two Big Ten titles
- Coach of Year in the Big Ten 3 times
- 3 Top 10 finishes
- Considered highly sought after in the NFL ranks after his experience in Cleveland/Baltimore and head coach experience at Iowa

And for what it's worth, the guy is a great person. I've met him once and anyone you talk to just raves about him being a good guy. If you care about the moral character of your program, I think you couldn't do much better than have Kirk at the helm.

Possibly Kelly's first hire as D Coord for the Irish. . .

His D Coordinator hire is going to be huge.

He apparently can run an offense and with Floyd/Rudolph/Allen/Crist back next year they should be putting up points again.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this hire.

Once again ND has to settle for their 3rd or 4th choice for Head Coach. May they continue to flounder in mediocrity.

You being against this makes me feel better about the hire.

It is a good hire. He's shown that he can really improve a program.

What is interesting is that this hire will really show if Notre Dame can ever return to it's historical greatness or if modern college football has passed them by.

The last really successful coach at Notre Dame needed to break the rules in order to return Notre Dame(3 schools put on probation for things that took place while Holtz was head coach). Brian Kelly doesn't have the luxury that Holtz had since Notre Dame already had it's run in with NCAA investigators.

A defensive coach may have been a better choice but I don't think there was any realistic defensive coaches that are better than Kelly.

I don't quite follow Rick Morrisey's reasoning here.

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/morrisse ... 11.article

Because ND didn't hire Stoops, or Meyer this is proof that the ND position isn't a plum job anymore? If you were to look at the ND head coach hirings for the past 50 years or so, not sure when ND hired a big time coach.

Davie wasn't a big time hire, neither was Willingham or Weis.

Holtz had some success at Arkansas, but was a flop at the pro level and really who remembers those dominant Minnesota teams of the early 80's :o

Gerry Faust was a high school coach....Dan Devine had success at Missouri (but hardly a power) and was run out of Green Bay before ND.

Ara came from Northwestern.

To say that because ND couldn't hire Stoops or Meyer somehow proves the program is fallen is incorrect especially since ND does not have a recent history of hiring big name coaches. Hiring Meyer would be like hiring Mckay from USC or Bo from Michigan in the 70's or Tom Osbourne from Nebraska in the 80's.

I don't disagree that ND may not have the allure that some ND fans percieve it to have, but to use the hiring of Kelly as an example of how far the program doesn't work. You could argue that hiring a coach who has a top 10 team is actually a vast updgrade of they have previously done.
