Cutler has played terribly. I will still take my chances with him over Rex, or Orton, or Alex Smith, or Jason Campbell 10 times out of 10.

i would too. That means he was definitely worth giving up a starting nfl qb and 2 1st round picks for!

I get your point, but this doesn't help your case at all. That is not saying much. Charlie Frye started today.

An average NFL starting QB. That is saying something.

Its clear that the trade didn't work out for this year. Its also clear that the Bears would not bein the playoffs even if Cutler played at a pro bowl level. It is also becoming clearer and clearer that you and Rick must love to act like assholes and rub Cutler's bad play in everybody's face. Remember that when you decide to call me out for posting in the Cubs section.

Again, you take your "average NFL QB" (who is in the midst of a 2-6 stretch, very average I guess) and I will take my chances long term with Jay Cutler.

He won't win a goddam thing with Lovie Smith and Ron Turner at the helm, though.

fair enough. I hate when my team is bad and eliminated with a few weeks left because really the only thing to take solace in is the high draft pick....

Don't act like that. You know you'd be all over me if Cutler was succeeding. Heck, you still find a way to bash Orton even though he's having a remarkably better season than Cutler. The fact that you continue to put the blame on Orton for the recent struggles of Denver when you NEVER gave him any credit for the 6-0 start shows how much of a meatball you are about this whole thing. Face it, I've been 100% right on Cutler so far. In fact, my biggest error was underrating what they gave up with Orton who is proving that he is at a minimum a top 15 QB, who is less experienced, and won't cost nearly as much money to resign.

I am not rubbing anything in anyone's face. I'm just not blind and able to ignore what I see and know in order to show some blind optimism for no real good reason. If you want me to start talking in "dreams and wishes" instead of reality then I can do it. Eventually though, you'll start to see what is obvious. You'll see that Cutler is a severely broken QB who has problems that may be impossible to fix. They may be lessened with a better supporting cast but this exact same stuff was going on in Denver.

As I said from day one of this trade, there is a reason that Denver gave up on Cutler. There is a reason that they wanted Cassel and then Orton who both are much less impressive QB's. There is a reason that Cutler didn't end up in Minnesota who made far more sense(great team needing an upgrade from really bad QB).

For as much as you seem to think Lovie and Jerry are terrible at their jobs, you continue to ignore the fact that they thought he was good enough to make a trade that may be one of the top 5 most expensive trades in the past 30 years. Is it possible that they simply saw "pro bowl QB", "4,500 yards", and "Erases my mistake with Rex" and made another in the series of mistakes they've made recently?

We can only judge this trade on the present. We all know that Cutler could become a hall of famer. Anything can happen. He does have the talent. From everything I've seen with Cutler we were sold an overhyped QB who can't control his game and has an attitude problem. That is my honest assessment. It's also the assessment of most of the NFL. He's the worst full time starting QB in the league this year outside of Stafford and Sanchez. Considering this is supposedly the start of Cutlers "prime" I don't see how that is acceptable and isn't a cause for major concern. We can't even say "At least he's better than Orton!" because he hasn't been.

Now, this is a league where Cedric Benson went from almost out of the league to potential all-pro. This is the same league where a 90 year old can potentially win the MVP after looking finished the year earlier. Cutler could light the league on fire next year.

My advice to you would be to just take it right now and then rub it in my face when Cutler proves he is a borderline top 5 NFL QB which is the only justification for the massive price the Bears paid. Unlike you, I'll be able to admit that I was wrong.

Yeah, Boilermaker Rick has been consistent and non-meatballish w/r/t his doubts about Cutler from day one of this whole thing. Dude got it right. I dunno and doubt that he's happy about that (other than in a 'my judgment is solid' kinda way), but ya can't deny that he was saying what we're all saying long before we all started to say it. Give the dude his due. Image

I'm not going to read all 18 pages so excuse me if this ground has been covered. But, I'll tell you who had the biggest 180 on this trade ever and that's Caleb Hanie.

He must have thought when this trade happened that he was set for 10 years, hold a clipboard, wear a baseball cap, lean over Cutler's shoulder looking at pictures on the sideline, and go out after games, and watch Cutler take every meaningful snap while nobody cared about the backup QB.

Now, he's getting thrown out there when he has to throw actual passes and exposing his lack of talent. He must be pissed. People are going to start thinking the backup is important again.

So after a mere 13 games, and YOU want me to say "oh this trade sucks!" If in 2010, 2011, etc the same things are still happening, I'll be the first one to say it was a bad trade. After 1 season where EVERYBODY (sans Robbie Gould) on that team is playing poorly you want me to say it was a bad trade? But I'm the meatball right?

6 months in, and already you act like a typical New Yorker.

All we can do is judge this trade by this year. We aren't making a final determination. I have said many times that Jay Cutler could turn this around and make this a great trade. It's the NFL. Turnarounds like this are possible. We don't know what will happen in the future.

I want you to say that if you judge this trade based off of year one that it was a mistake. That's really an inarguable statement. 2010 may be a different story all together. It may be much better. It may be more of the same. It may be worse. I've never stated that the trade was a failure just that so far it looks like one. Do you agree with the last statement or not?
Frank Coztansa wrote:

Look around you Frank. Most people are saying the same things I am. I've just been doing it for longer.

it now appears that cutler completely sucks and it is in doubt as to whether he will be able to recover.

however, i will never regret the cutler trade. no matter what happens.

The reason that some people will never regret the trade is that they have no one to throw under the bus but themselves. Any other action, it would be easy to blame the GM or coach or anyone else. But everyone loved this, so if the trade is a failure, they have to admit they were wrong. So instead we'll hear about how the trade can't be a failure no matter what happens. Interesting how that works.
