Back in the day the Sports Machine was can't miss TV each Sunday night. We didn't have cable for a long time and it was the only decent national sports show. Saw it a couple of years ago when he was phasing in the daughter. It was time to put the show to bed.

I loved it when he would push some random big Red or Green button on "the machine" to roll the tape. It was a stupid gimmick I always laughed at.

George Michael, the veteran sports anchor & sports director of NBC's WRC-TV in Washington, DC where the "Sports Machine" originated, was a fixture on the old "Coppock on Sports" show whenever Chet wanted to talk Washington sports. Long before "ESPN SportsCenter" & ESPNEWS 24/7, George's "Machine" was truly the last word on the weekend sports scene. In addition to all the highlights of the sports we all care about, he gave fringe sports like drag racing & rodeo the time of night within his show.

The show launched in 1980, but it wasn't until 1984 when it went national on NBC-owned & operated stations across America. It left the air in 2007 due to declining ratings, but Michael still maintained a presence on the Beltway sports scene when the "Sports Machine" stopped working altogether.

Interestingly enough, there was a Chicago connection. George's backup sports anchor relocated to Chicago many years ago as NBC5's #1 sports anchor, only to die of cardiac arrest at only age 37 in 2002. That would be Darrian Chapman, and before his death, Darrian brought a degree of George's style with him whenever he was on. An example...George would describe a team's uniform color, such as "The Bulls in red." Darrian did the same thing when he was here before his own death.

SHARK? Thats all you got buddy?

According to Coppock, he was offered the Sports Machine gig first and turned it down!

After I read Coppock's book this year, I discovered that he was offered every major sports media gig in the last 25 years. It's amazing that he is content with just doing pre/post game coverage for Notre Dame football. With all the people beating down his door, he could be making millions...
