The Cubs are close to agreeing to a three-year deal with Marlon Byrd.

My opinion of this if it happens is 100% based on the terms of the deal.

3 years and 15 million. Glad to see they finally made a move, but Byrd is just a guy. Heard someone say the other day, that the guy he compares to the best is Reed Mantle. Still need a leadoff man and a 2nd basemen. I would move Theriot to 2nd, and bring in a SS for one year.

At least they are doing something, right?

3 years is too long for this guy.

Eh, I'm okay with this I guess. It's backloaded and it's not Pods so +2 there. Still I'm not sure what the end game is with a move like this, is he really 5 million per year better than a Fuld? Eh

No, and that's a problem. I guess most of my angst is due to the difference between Cameron and Byrd.

The money is good but the years are bad (what did he do to deserve 3 years??). You're right, they had to do something because the alternatives (Panzy, Ankiel, Fuld/R Mantle) are terrible.

I would not compare Marlon to Reed Johnson. Pretty decent stats. I was hoping the Cubs signed him. I think the team is going to be good with him in the mix. They should still search for a 5th starter/long releiver. I would like to see the Cubs use their farm system, but I like Marlon. He is a solid addition.

Yea he's an upgrade, but at what cost? Because of this marginal upgrade in CF can we not make a move at SS now to move Riot to 2nd? Are they planning on Castro being on the opening day roster? Who is our 5th starter?

Depending on how you look at stats, you can either A) Assume Byrd is good for another around 800 OPS season with his last 3 year split or B) Look at his career as a whole and set the expectations around a 750

I'm guessing Lou sticks him in the 7 hole and prays for a 750-800 ops
I think we'll need to revisit this deal in March and see everything that Jim does to really evaluate it

Cub are the first team ever to give this guy a multi-year contract. Same as Bradley... I'm wondering, who is Hendry bidding against?

Three years? I thought those deals were only reserved for free agents of Milton Bradley's caliber.

And btw I wouldn't trust too many stats coming out of Texas, or at least expect them to translate to the Cubs.

I think Sammy missed the juicy wave of the '90s down in Texas by a few years. But as we all know, he wised up and found his own Flintstone vitamins a few years later.

Baseball-Reference's list of similar batters for Marlon Byrd. Guess who's #1, meaning the most similar batter to Marlon Byrd?
http://www.baseball-reference.com/friv/scomp_bat.cgi?I=byrdma01:Marlon%20Byrd&st=career&compage=&age=
.....Reed Johnson. Stats are our friend, and they prove that Byrd is bad. So either Reed deserves to be getting a 3 year $15 mil. contract or Hendry bid against himself again and way fucking overpayed for a mediocre CF.

This is why doing something just to do something is stupid. Marlon Byrd is a waste of money.

AGREE! AGREE! AGREE!

I can only guess once again Byrd's agent, who is also Bradleys agent, give Hendry the "I need the extra year" and Hendry just says OK????

The 32-year-old Byrd had a career year in 2009, hitting .283 with 20 home runs and 89 RBIs. It was his first major league season with more than 500 at-bats; putting up career highs in games played (146), home runs, doubles (43) and RBIs.

32 years old coming off a career year in Texas and its the first time hes had more than 500 AB's in a season. The only plus side of this signing is maybe it will chill out Big Fan

Whoa, hang on. You have been leading the charge the past month for the Cubs to open the checkbook and spend some money. Now that they have done that, you are still mad? What do you want this team to do?

2/$15.5M for Cameron or 3/$15M for Byrd?

I gotta go with Cammy.

This is why you have to fire Jim Hendry. "No, don't bother," they say, "that only punishes him while you live with his past mistakes." BUT HE KEEPS MAKING MISTAKES THAT'S THE THING
