Enlarged heart caused cardiac arrest for Adams

The stunning passing of Bears defensive end Gaines Adams was because of cardiac arrest caused by an enlarged heart, a Greenwood, South Carolina coroner said Sunday morning.

ESPN's Adam Schefter passed along the news.

Adams was believed to be asleep when the cardiac arrest occurred. We send his family and friends our condolences.

UPDATE: The Bears released a statement on Adams' passing: "We are stunned and saddened by the news of Gaines' passing. Our prayers are with his family during this difficult time."

Count me among those with less than sympathetic initial thoughts. But I was moreso thinking that it's kinda ironic that a player with alot of raw talent but little to no desire or motivation succumbed to a heart issue a La Eddy Curry.

Is an enlarged heart something that can develop quickly? Did he ever have symptoms or sit out games at TB?

Anabolic steroids cause enlargement of the heart. Using the steroids causes the heart muscle cells to grow faster than the blood vessels to supply the new muscle. This creates an area of heart tissue with poor blood flow which leads to the eventual death of the new cells - ie a heart attack.

I had a friend of mine from high school that died at 24 due to steriod induced cardiomegaly. Like Adams, he died in his sleep and was found by his fiancee the next morning.

Hopefully Adams' death will wake people up to the real dangers of this shit.

He sucked at football and apparently he sucks at life.

Who has a heart attack and dies at 26?

Another "enlarged heart" death? I'd figure with all the medical technology and the physicals these players take, there'd be more diagnoses.

Honestly, my initial reaction was, "he played like he was already dead."
