Last night a caller told LoHo that he was sorry about DePaul basketball. LoHo said he wasn't sorry about DePaul and then he got an attitude and was ready to throw the guy off the air. I get that LoHo is a DePaul alum and that it's a big thing for him to be an announcer, but DePaul is likely never going to have a good team again. If the Score wasn't the flagship station, DePaul wouldn't ever be worth discussing.

The guy started out calling him Holmes and then cracked wise about Larry doing De Paul games. Larry gave him time to set himself straight even though the caller did not deserve it.

I don't get why the Score chooses to do NIU and DePaul games as opposed to Illinois. I really don't. I'm sure it's money but does anybody really listen to these broadcasts?

Even if you say that NIU or DePaul has as many fans listening as Illinois would (which I wouldn't but for the sake of argument), wouldn't there be far more Wisconsin, Michigan, MSU, Purdue, etc. fans of Illinois' typical opponents to put it far over the top.

Considering WIND or whateverthehell 560AM is does the Illini games, it can't cost much to broadcast them. I'm assuming that DePaul or NIU pays the Score to broadcast it. I really don't know but I'd be curious as I really can't think of another explanation.

I know I'm an extremely biased Illinois fan but am I way off base here? Wouldn't far more people listen to Big Ten broadcasts in Chicago than Big East or MAC matchups?

Now you've done it Dr. Kenneth Noisewater. The NIU mafia is going to be all over that one.

Yes

That is why the Score carries them. They pay.

Yes they would, but the Illini would not pay what these two would.

So, if NIU pays the Score for a 3 hour chunk of air time, does NIU keep all the ad revenue? Is it like a prepackaged 3 hour NIU product?

Doc, factually speaking, Northern Illinois football & basketball broadcasts are actually an ISP Sports production. I'm reasonably sure that 670 The SCORE pays ISP to broadcast Huskie football & basketball, as well as "NIU Live". Notre Dame football & basketball, heard on "The Big 89" WLS-AM, is also produced by ISP, and I think WLS does the same thing as the local home of the Fighting Irish.

As far as DePaul basketball is concerned, WSCR pays the university for the airtime for the games, but Zach Zaidman & Laurence Holmes are PAID by the school to broadcast the games. Also, LoHo, I do believe, is a DePaul graduate...

SHARK wrote:
I think the problem 670 The SCORE had the Blackhawks' rights had a lot to do with the fact that they inherited the contract from the defunct WMAQ Radio when they signed off for good about a decade ago. The Hawks weren't nearly the marquee team they are now, and WSCR had a lot of trouble trying to get another radio station to carry their games before WGN 720 took over last year as the team's radio home.

I remember one time where former SCORE host Mike North thought the Hawks/WSCR contract was a "bad deal", and I think it came at a point where SportsRadio 670 also had the local radio rights to University of Illinois basketball & football. The Hawks/WSCR deal was so bad, that before WGN Radio took over, their radio deal was similar to the one for DePaul basketball. Much like DePaul pays 'SCR for the airtime & announcers for their games, it was a similar arrangement for the Blackhawks before 'GN took over a year ago.

Pick a lane SHARK.

Nevertheless, DePaul basketball sucks and the Blackhawks kind of sucked too (not so much now, but when the Hawks were on the Score). Jesse Rogers was the poor guy who got stuck covering a terrible hockey team. Do you remember when the White Sox won the World Series and there was a Blackhawks game on the Score? I also get sick of the obsessive Sox coverage because the Score is the Sox station. The Sox fans hardly even go to games and most of them that call the Score are jerks. However, I do have to admire Williams and Guillen because Hendry and Piniella are a couple of tools.

You can always tune in WGN Radio for a dipshit Cubs fix.

I get a little sick of 12 months of baseball. I wish they'd talk more about the NFL Playoffs and the NBA Playoffs.

SHARK had it right the second time; I accidentally caught the tail end of a DePaul game and there's something in the disclaimer about DePaul purchasing the airtime. ISP production notwithstanding, I'm sure Northern Illinois buys its time on 670 too, because there's no way they'd air crappy NIU games if they weren't brokered.

One thing to keep in mind is that Illinois didn't want to be preempted for anything else (remember the Hawks were on the station at the time of that decision) and they didn't want to have to be on an alternate station on occasion.

Zach Zaidman is doing "Scoreboard Updates" on "B & B" this afternoon, and in every one of his updates, he reminds listeners that DePaul interim head coach Tracy Webster joins LoHo at 8p this evening...By the way, Zach & LoHo have the call of the DePaul/West Virginia game in Rosemont at 7:45p tomorrow following Brian "The Whipping Boy" Paruch & Matt "The Dancing Fool" Rodewald on 670 The SCORE. The "Heckyl & Jeckyl" of sports talk radio because "Whip" & "Rodie" sound very similar...

Interesting.

Well maybe they've changed their tune now since their pregame show on WIND is pre-empted most Saturdays for some infomercial to sell vitamin supplements or a real estate scam literally until seconds before they abruptly cut to the actual kickoff.

Doc, I know that WIND carries "The Townstone Financial Show" on Saturday afternoons...

Guys, I believe ESPN Radio 1000 had the "Chicago Sports Exchange" on Saturday mornings not that long ago...Based on what I vaguely remember, it was the guy from the Mortgage Exchange, whose name escapes me, and Lou Canellis as hosts...

They also had a handyman that was a pretty offensive stereotype to blue collar workers

Radio gadfly is back in court
Posted by Shia K. at 1/14/2009 12:03 PM CST on Chicago Business

Joe Aldeguer, the radio personality who offers mortgage advice, is trying to sell one of his multimillion-dollar homes while battling dozens of Chicagoans in the court system.

Regular readers of this column might recall that last year Mr. Aldeguer saw two of his multimillion-dollar homes come thisclose to foreclosure before he was able to negotiate with the bank for a lower interest rate.

Now he’s trying to sell one of them—the Gold Coast condo, a gut rehab with a finished basement—for $2.5 million. The incentive for buyers is a new BMW Mini-Cooper in the garage “so you won’t have to worry if your car will fit,” according to real estate literature.

Mr. Aldeguer is trying to get rid of his pricey condo while facing two lawsuits related to condo-hotel projects he was connected to in Florida.

One lawsuit represents 55 individuals or couples who say they purchased units in the Legacy Dunes project in Kissimmee, Fla., thinking they would be able to rent them out as hotel rooms.

“He talked about how you can be like the Hilton or the Hyatt by owning hotel rooms and having someone else rent them out for you. He said you’d make a profit,” said Joel Rothman, the Florida attorney representing the Chicagoans in the case.

Mr. Aldeguer is accused of “scheming to commit fraud” and other “deceptive practices,” according to the lawsuit.

A similar suit has been filed in Chicago on behalf of 63 people who invested in Runaway Beach, also in Kissimmee—which had Mike Ditka as a partner. Mr. Ditka is not named in the lawsuit.

“High-pressure tactics and misrepresentation were used,” said Ariel Weissberg, the Chicago attorney in that case. “(Mr. Aldeguer's) group received large premiums and fees, and these people are suffering,” he said.

A call to Mr. Aldeguer’s cell phone hasn’t been returned.
