I bet Martz would use rollouts a lot more with Cutler, though, and that's where he excels.

After the season he had last year Cutler has a lot riding on next season. I think he will listen.

I wouldn't stress about Martz. You'll get better work out of him than we had Turner, I am sure of that.
I'm a lot more concerned about this defense. No coach, Urlacher a year older and coming off an injury and otherwise being a moondick. The Defense was a big part of the problem in 09 and will certainly limit Martz's options.

Kurt Warner disagrees with you .

I think Cutler has more talent. Better arm and mobility. Martz did well with guys like Kitna and Warner. And he struggled trying to get guys like Shaun Hill and Alex Smith to play at the same level. The Lions problems wasn't their offense. They stunk on defense and Marineli wanted them to run more so he could keep the defense off the field. Martz wanted to score.

If the players have the mindset of this coaching staff existing only for one year then its going to depend on how much he wants to change cutler vs helping him improve on his current skill set.

I am not sure how you can say that right now. I am really glad Cutler is with the Bears, but to say he has more talent right now than a guy who is going to be a HOF QB with 2 MVP trophies, a Superbowl ring and MVP, is just off IMO.

Injuries hurt them and the lack of depth. I believe if Tommie Harris returns to form (because he won't be rehabbing during offseason) the defense will improve. I think Urlacher is still good enough and a year without all that pounding is probably good for his body. I'm still worried about the safety position. I saw a lot of flashes from guys like Afalava and Stelz but not enough that I don't think that is a concern.

I think you are confusing talent with being a better player. A lot of guys have more physical talent than players that are better than them. The players that are better usually have that it factor or are mentally tougher. I think LeBron has more physical talent than MJ had but I don't think LeBron will ever be better than MJ. I think Cutler can be better but so far he appears to be a mental midget.

His career reputation is riding on this season too. He needs to play at a high level consistently and reduce the number of errors he had. He has been in the league for 4 years now without a playoff appearance and he had the same problem in college and HS. He wants and needs to get that monkey off his back.

I completely get the difference. I still don't think you can say right now that Cutler has more talent than Warner. Warner is a very talented QB and his stats and trophies point to this. Cutler has a lot of talent, but I dont think he is more talented than Warner. He has a stronger arm than Warner, but that is not all there is to talent.

You think Warner has more physical talent? I guess we will disagree on this one. I think Peyton Manning and Rodgers are the only guys in the league that have more physical talent than Cutler.

I dont disagree. Cutler's basically a combine superstar. Won't mean shit on the field though till he works on his issues. As of right now, Warner is/was clearly better than Cutler.

Depends what form you are talking about with Tommie. He'll never get back to 06 form. I have doubts he can even ever stay healthy for a full season anymore. If he's ever 100%, he's clearly a very good DT. Their overall secondary is pretty bad though, and their DE's are bad. That's not a good combo to have a lack of talent/depth at.

I agree that Cutler has a better arm and mobility, but in every other area Warner is more talented--touch, accuracy, decision making. . .

Right. Kyle Boller has a better arm and more mobility than Warner, to put the debate into perspective. (Obviously Cutler's much better than Boller.)

But Cutler didn't marry that old chick from Webster, and Warner did. So he's got that going for him.

I think a healthy/better Harris makes the pass rush better. Also another year with Marinelli should help. I would like to believe all the players around the league weren't lying about how much he helped them. IMO this makes the offensive hire and talent upgrades that much important.

Well yeah, he will make the pass rush better. But the combined DE play is subpar, as is the secondary. If you cant rush the passer, or defend WR's with man coverage, you'll get killed. And Marinelli didnt seem to do anything this year to improve the D Line. Maybe another year will help. I wouldnt hold my breath on it though.

With this defense the ends won't matter as much if Harris is 80% of what he was in 06'. Sapp was so disruptive in this defense that it made the DE's look better than they were. I like what Marinelli did with Anderson. He appeared to be a better player. Alex Brown is usually in the right place too.

Martz went to Tennessee to have dinner with Cutler and kiss his ring. Tough sell when you consider Cutler has the choice of playing in the same offense or learning a new one. I want Martz but I think Rogers will get the job.

I prefer Martz too. But do we listen to the hype that in Martz's spread offense scheme tight-ends become invisible and the improving but still suspect O-line would get Cutler killed?

The SCORE's Zach Zaidman has just broken the news that the lovechild of Steve Dahl & Roger Ebert, let alone the Mayor on "Spin City", has just been hired as the Bears' new Offensive Coordinator...

That Spin City Mayor (Barry Bostwick?) once played the father of our country in an excellent CBS mini-series. He did a great job as George Washington.

Jimmy, I believe you are correct on Barry Bostwick, but Mike Martz as O.C.? Not so much...This has DISASTER written all over it.
