Bears part ways with pro personnel director

Off-season changes for the Bears continued Monday as the team parted company with the front-office executive best known for engineering the trade for quarterback Jay Cutler, two league sources confirmed.

It is unclear whether pro personnel director Bobby DePaul was fired or resigned, but he is believed to be out of a job after he was escorted out of Halas Hall.

DePaul, in his ninth year in the position, played a major role in acquiring free-agents such as John Tait and Thomas Jones as well as working behind the scenes last April to pull off the trade for Cutler with the Broncos. He is deeply connected around the league and well-respected for his ability to judge of talent and make a deal.
His relationship with general manager Jerry Angelo always was considered strong, even if it was known by insiders that DePaul and Lovie Smith didn't always see eye-to-eye.

Brash sometimes to a fault, DePaul came to the Bears in 2001 with Angelo after having served as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles' player personnel department for four years following an eight-year career as an NFL assistant coach.

DePaul entered the NFL in 1989, hired by former Bears defensive back Richie Petitbon as a member of Joe Gibbs' coaching staff at Washington, where he stayed until 1993 after winning an NFL championship with the Redskins' Super Bowl XXVI victory over Buffalo. The Bowie, Md., native then served on the Bengals coaching staff for three seasons before joining the Eagles as a scout.

I cannot think of too many problems with the pro personel the Bears have acquired over the years. It is the college scouting department that needed to go.

My thoughts exactly. The names I've heard to replace him are Lovie's kid, Lovie's wife, Rod Maranelli, and Ike South.

Frank Omayele....Mushin Muhammad.....Adam Archuleta....just to name a few off the top of my head

Adam Archuletta was a Lovie acquisition.

The MONEY for Mushin was bad. He was not a bad receiver.

Omiyale was playing guard for the first time in his life. He was starting to look acceptable at the end of the year.

Didn't the college personnel guy leave during the season? So Angelo had to fire his hand picked coordinator and player personnel guy in the same offseason. If they can get a guy with fresh/good ideas in that slot I will be happy. Other than Cutler there weren't any big swings when it came to making deals or sign free agents. They were all conservative and cheap. I like the idea of getting Jerry and Lovie out of their comfort zone.

Why can't they hire Bobby Duke? at least hire someone with the last name of a good basketball team.

This speaks volumes about the culture that Jerry Angelo has developed at Halas Hall.

The guy works side by side with you for nine years and you need to call security when you fire him? That is beyond f*#ked up.

HAving worked in HR escorting people out is pretty common.

Also this may have been exaggerating the situation.

For all we know if was Angelo who escorted him out not security.
