Figured it would make sense to have one all inclusive thread for the odd and ends stories that define spring training.

Z is no longer going to be throwing his splitter and is instead going back to the sinker which he used a lot more in 2003-04.

From the Trib:

To go with his new attitude, Zambrano said he plans to ditch the cut fastball from his repertoire. He hasn't displayed enough control of it to keep throwing it regularly so he decided to go back to what made him successful in the past.

"The sinker was what made me good earlier in my career," he said. "I want to stay with the sinker. No more cutter. Just sinker, slider, split and high fastball."

Interesting. Hopefully this change leads to less walks and pitch counts for him.

This "new attitude" cannot possibly last past the first booted grounder.

Agreed. First blown grounder or a borderline pitch called a ball.

You can't fix crazy.

First game he hangs a couple of sinkers I bet there's a story about him going "back to" his splitter.

I dont see why he would. The sinker was his best pitch.

But you never know with Crazytown

Thats what I mean. He clearly has the talent in the arm, just not between the ears. Its a shame because there really is no reason why he should not be a 20 game winner pretty much every year.

Yeah maybe ammend that to 16, which is the new 20

Side note: from 97-2002 Randy Johnson averged 20 wins.

Thats pretty good.

Soriano's knee 'not 100 percent'

http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/n ... id=4936522

He lists it at only 75-80 and hasn't run full speed on it all winter. He's not reporting pain though at least, so not sure what's causing the 20-25% badness.

If he's hurt we better hope and pray Nady is healthy enough for 400+AB's this year.

the cubs need for zambrano to get off to a great start, and for the yankees or red sox to lose a top starter to season-ending injury so that the cubs can unload him and his contract to one of those teams. we can only hope those two teams get so blinded by their dislike for one another that one of them will pay for zambrano.

@thekapman: Angel Guzman feels pain in his right shoulder. Shut down for a couple of days and then reevaluated. Not good news at all.

Fuck.

Now I might be imagining things, but I thought I read somewhere that PECOTA had Sore-iano projected to hit 19 HRs and like 60 RBI. That contract looks worse by the day...

Is it bad that I would be happy if Soriano manages to hit 19HR's and get 60 RBI's this year?

Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Friday that he's not expecting right-hander Angel Guzman to be ready for the start of the season.

Not sure if it's his shoulder or knee. Either way it's not good for a bullpen that is already (somehow) short an arm. If Guzman misses time who steps into the right handed set-up role? Samardjiza? Caridad? Stevens? Patton???

They've got a few reasonable options to replace Guzman, who was probably the 8th inning guy going into camp.

Stevens/Berg/Shark/Caridad.

Angel Guzman has a "significant ligament tear" in the front, bottom part of his right shoulder, according to Paul Sullivan of Chicago Tribune.

Guzman has not decided whether to have surgery. If he does, there's no guarantee he'll be able to pitch with it again. If he rehabs the injury, it would take 4-6 weeks before knowing if he would be able to pitch.

Ouch Babe.

Hendry needs to go find a setup man. All his options in camp suck.

Guzman plans to have risky surgery to fix shoulder

March 7, 2010
BY GORDON WITTENMYER gwittenmyer@suntimes.com
MESA, Ariz. – Cubs pitcher Angel Guzman says he plans to have surgery on his injured shoulder, even though he's been told few pitchers ever come back from that kind of surgery.

"It's going to be tough," said Guzman, 28, who was diagnosed over the weekend with a significant ligament tear near his armpit and instability in the shoulder. "But it's better than not having it and not having a chance. Doing it, I have a small chance, but there is a chance. So I'm going to take the chance."

Guzman says the decision isn't final. He plans to see famed orthopedist James Andrews – who already has done operations on Guzman's shoulder and elbow -- as soon as this week and then consult with his agents and his family.

"It's very sad, but what can I do?" he said. "I'm still breathing."

He may also seek a third medical opinion before deciding, he said.

The Cubs' medical staff recommends four to six weeks of strengthening and rehab followed by a throwing program instead of surgery.

But Guzman said, "I think there is no chance to get it fixed without the surgery. By doing rehab, it wouldn't do anything. I spent four months here working out [over the winter] and I felt as strong as ever. And still, pain. I think that's the only way to get it fixed."

It's already been a nightmarish year for Guzman, who faces a possible career-ending injury less than two months after his brother and his best friend were shot to death back home in Caracas, Venezuela.

Manager Lou Piniella suggested Guzman might benefit from going home for a while before taking the next step.

"I would love to," he said. "For the last two months I've been through some issues. Maybe going home would clear my mind and [make] me fresh and I can come back and fight for my goal, for what I want."

Regardless of the treatment course he chooses, he plans to fight, he said.

"I love pitching. I've been pitching since I was 4 years old," he said. "I'm still 28. I think 28's a good age to keep pushing it."

Guzman, who agreed to an $825,000 contract in January in his first year of arbitration eligibility, supports his parents and siblings back home.

"I'm going to get all the people that are close to me involved in my decision, because I've got a family to support and I think it's a good idea to talk to them," he said. "Maybe it's going to take a few days, or a few weeks."

For now: "Disappointed. Sadness," he said. "I just have to go through it."

Hang em up buddy - another failed 'great' prospect by the Cubs organization

Anybody else catch this from the Daily Herald and Bruce Miles?

"Colvin came up as an emergency outfielder late last September and got into six games. His plans this spring were just to open some eyes after putting on about 25 pounds of muscle in the off-season."
Houston, I hope we don't have a 50 game problem.
