faulk is a good one. inside my top 10, but not top 5. i like that he got a mention here, he usually goes pretty unheralded in this conversation.

Like it or not, OJ Simpson is (reasonably) an all time top five RB to many.

martin was consistent over a long period, but so was faulk, with ridiculous rushing and receiving numbers. no way i rank martin over faulk head-to-head, although i really respect curtis martin.

edit: and if consistency is your thing, how can martin be ranked above emmitt smith?

oj had some great years, but too few of them. hes in the top 15 for me, but not top 10 or top 5. tony dorsett is another good one who is top 10. he would be in my 2nd tier.

that's true. he was too busy holding a football and winning championships, while LT was sitting on the sidelines watching the game through a dark visor.

you have no case. it's not even funny that you have tried to compare the two. it's rather sad...

I don't think the argument that either Smith or LT is better is inherently crazy. It's a small margin seperating them either way.

Any NFL running back would have won titles with those teams. He would get to the 3rd level without getting touched. What LT did in his prime was simply a pleasure to watch. I never felt that way about Emmitt. He was Thurman Thomas on a better team. In fact as a child I thought Thurman was a better back.

what LT has done on a very good team in the playoffs takes him off the list for me. it's not even a contest. he has been a non-factor in the post season.

i'm not saying he's not a great running back...in the regular season. he will be a HOF'er i'm pretty sure. but emmitt was a bulldozer. he was a super bowl MVP.

i don't believe that just any running back could have been as successful as he was with the cowboys. i think he benefited from a great o-line and had a great QB. no doubt. but he also had tremendous presence on the field.

plus, LT only has 12k yards compared to his 18k, and i don't see LT getting up to 18k in his career.

Marshall Faulk is a Top-5 RB of all time. No question.

Emmitt played 6 more years and didn't take the same beating LT took. Don't ignore his receiving yard either.

There wasn't a hole on that Cowboy offense. That was the best offense I've ever seen. Not as explosive as some teams but easily the best.

lots of running backs take beatings. brian westbrook took more beatings than LT has and he was still effective in playoff games.

smith took a TREMENDOUS beating, and had an unbelievable threshold for pain. he was between the tackles, hard-nosed, a bulldozer like was mentioned earlier. and smith could catch as well. not the crazy numbers like faulk and LT maybe, but definitely better than average.
