Jerry West better watch out. LA athletes from the 60's & 70's are having a rough day.

Merlin was a star from my childhood. If he played today, ESPN would be talking him up as the best ever. I know, they do that with everybody. However, I have a huge soft spot for him. The Fearsome Foursome are in my earliest sports memories. May his pain be over. R.I.P.

Wasn't he the analyst for the Bears' lone Super Bowl victory?

To steal SHARK's thunder  . Yes. Yes, he was. Dick Enberg did the play by play.

I'm sure SHARK will have more to add later, halftime entertainment for the game, perhaps?

Truth be told, I wasn't aware that Merlin Olsen was fighting cancer before his death. Not only was Merlin at one time, NBC Sports' #1 NFL analyst when they had the AFC package back in the day, but he was also an actor on "Little House on the Prairie" and on a spinoff series called "Father Murphy" in the early '80s. Both dramas were produced by Michael Landon's production company. By the way, Landon himself passed away in 1992.

As for the Super Bowl XX broadcast, I remember Olsen being quite surly. He seemed to be mad about something.
