Another in the series of puzzling moves out of Halas Hall.

Alex Brown has been the most consistent player on that Bears front 4.

Idiots ....

http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/20 ... brown.html

Quote:
An NFL source told the Tribune the Bears are working actively to deal Alex Brown. If they cannot find a taker for the nine-year veteran who finished last season as a captain, they could release him. The move of Idonije likely signals the end of Brown's career with the Bears because there simply isn't enough playing time to go around.

This makes no sense to me. What makes us think Izzy can play the outside? He was a glorified special teamer in the past, and definitely didn't stand out on the inside last year.

They better be getting a CB, Safety or O-linemen that can contribute.

If they are going to get rid of him hopefully they can at least
get something for him rather than just letting him go. Hard to
see him as the odd man out, he has been a very solid contributor
over the years. Anderson hasn't shown us squat that last couple
of years but Brown could at the very least knock down passes and
make a tackle or two. I hope he can latch on with someone. I
don't think they ventured a guess as to what he might be worth
to another team. Could we get a late round draft pick for him
possibly? I am guessing a lot of teams will just wait for the Bears
to drop him and then give him a call for free.

How is there not enough playing time to go around? You signed 1 guy, said another isn't coming back, now brown is joining him on the road and drunken oklahoma isn't going to be there to get hurt for the year in week 1.

He might not excite but he was the most consistent and probably the best player on that underachieving d line.
Is Idonije really an upgrade over Brown at that position?

You clear playing time for Idonije by cutting Brown? Is Ozzie Guillen coaching the Bears this year?

True but they are gonna sell it to us as an upgrade no doubt

Well then the first question from the media's mouths should be: "If this is an upgrade, why didn't we see this move last year?"

I feel a B&B/ZZ segment breaking down this "upgrade"

They must see Brown as being at the cusp of breaking down. Get rid of him while he has value. Well, we'll see how that plays out. Go sign for someone else and burn our ass for 2 more years, most likely.

This is silly. Brown isn't a world beater, but don't you think that playing opposite of Peppers is going to help him?

I can't wait until B&B tell Zaidman about this. He generally doesn't seem to know what's going on with the Bears.

Are we sure this is even true?

Brown is okay against the run, he's dependable not ouchy, and seems like a good guy. He's not a very good pass rusher and they seem to be all about that right now. Mark Anderson does not thrill me and I'm not sure about switching Idonije around.

I think they want peppers for the right side. Maybe get a pick or a body for him? I don't see them just releasing him unless they really need to free up some money.

PSA: DE was the worst position on the team last year, and Alex Brown was the second best DE. That should tell you something.

I don't like the idea of "making space for Idonije", but I have a feeling what they really mean is "making space to pay someone who isn't Alex Brown." Which I'm fine with.

So it looks like getting rid of him will save them 10 or 10.5 million dollars. You know what that kind of money can buy you over the next 2 years? A ticket for lovie to get the fuck out of town. Make it happen.

Safety?

If it means they are gearing up for a run at Atogwe then we might be in agreement. Even under that scenario I hate the idea of Idonije and Anderson starting next year.

My guess is Peppers gets the start over Anderson. Just a guess, I have no inside knowledge.

So they want peppers more at left? I thought they wanted Idonije for left. And that would leave MA for the right. I'm not huge on that.

So what does this line look like?

It looks like something the Bears typically do-- make moves that leave many people wondering what the fuck is going on.

A giant steaming pile of crap that will allow teams to double up on Peppers, just like they did on Brown.

Spend a bunch of money on a pass rusher, and he won't be able to rush because, as usual, they will refuse to blitz when necessary. IMO, all the good that came 2 or 3 weeks ago in terms of the DL is going to be thrown out the window.

I always thought that in addition to talent, the next most important thing to a truly dominant defensive line is to have depth to allow for rotation so these guys stay fresh.

Alex Brown is expensive, aging, and bad. It's no mystery why they would be looking to shop him.

He's not bad. I think he is excellent against the run and average against the pass (unless he is playing the Giants).

In any sport, the best way to to get max trade value is to let it out that you will release the player if you're unable to trade him.

Brilliant.

I doubt it was a Bears source that said that.

This is probably what happened:

Low level guy on Chiefs or some other team: Hey, Mr. Newspaper, the Bears were talking to our office about trading Alex Brown.

Mr. Newspaper: ORLY?

Low level guy: Yes, they seem to be shopping him around.

Mr. Newspaper: What a scoop! If they're not able to trade him, I imagine they'll cut him loose.

***writes article about Alex Brown***
***wonders why newspaper model is dying***

As for Brown being good against the run, that's great, but it's a bit like a halfback that is a spectacular blocker. There's value in that, but you better have other skills. And I think that he is one of the worst starting DEs in the NFL at rushing the passer.

It would be great if this plays out with the Bears exchanging Brown and a 3rd for a second and then signing Otogwe with Brown's money

or....

There is talk about the Bears sending Brown to the Panthers for the return of Chris Harris. Decent move especially if they then spend the savings on Otogwe. Imagine a defense renewed with two good safties and a defensive end.
