Ok,I think as a manager,Pinella should look beyond the contracts and start the BEST player. I would keep Fukudome in RF and start Colvin in LF. Soriano is a good guy,but he is a DH at best. I think the best move the new ownership can make is cutting loose Soriano because he JUST IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH! Trade him & pay off most of his contract for bullpen help. THAT would send a message to CUB Nation.

There is no way the Cubs will eat close to the $85 million that is still left on Soriano's contract. He will be around for a very long time.

Sad to say, but the best move for the Cubs is to use Colvin as trade bait to get some more starting pitching and possibly even a BP arm as well. Send him to the AL, where they can incorporate him into the lineup as a DH as well as in the OF.

In a fantasy word where money was no object this would be a great play.

Colvin isn't that high on anyone's radar list. To suggest that we would get anything of siginicant value back is silly.

IF the Cubs are going to win this year, the outfield of Soriano-Byrd-Fukudome better produce or it's all moot.

Soriano will be the poster child for Hendry's lunatic spending. We are stuck with him for a long time.

As for Colvin, let's relax a little bit. To many "phenom" flops have come up through the Cubs system...and he could very well be another one. I like the idea of spot starts, and lets just wait and see what he does. He may be in Iowa by May. Once the teams start to scout him, we'll see what he can & can't do.

Let's not Patterson this guy. He had a good spring training. Let's keep it at that. Soriano, right or wrong, still owns that LF spot unless his knee falls apart or he's terrible and even with the terrability he has now they'll still give him until August you know to get it going.

Wasn't this guy named Hoffpauir two years ago? Aye, calm it down a bit. A good spring training and < 15 major league at-bats do not a superstar make.

Not even close. Hasselhoff was a 44th round nothing that had a couple good years in AAA at a VERY advanced age. Colvin is a 24 yr old former first rounder. I'm not saying he's going to be a superstar but he deserves a chance to show what he can do.

Edit: Hasselhoff was a 44th round nothing for the Rays. He was a 13th round nothing for the Cubs.

24 is young but 27-28 is a "VERY advanced age?"

I think maybe this guy could be a 4th outfielder. Which means he should be starting on the Cubs..

62 ABs with 0 walks this spring...

still, you see what you have here, if he has no eye at the plate you ship[ him to Iowa, and still have Fuld and Hoffpauier around.

He does have some value on your roster, because Nady can't even throw at the moment...

Was gonna say the same thing

Come on 62 AB no walks , he needs some seasoning down in Iowa. Wish I had my copy of Who's Who around so I could check out his stats.

Soriano will find his way to the DL thus giving him the consecutive starts he needs to develop as a major league player. I really don't think this ass backwards way of running the cubs will ever work. Its like they build this team to be kinda ok but not great or kinda bad but not complete garbage. Get a damn organizational philosophy already and have the fire sale and start over with a god damn plan for once. I have no problem with them being off the map for a few years while they install this philosophy with the young players and develop them at the major league level. Its much better than patching up an average team with bad contracts year after year. What the hell is the organizational philosophy for this club? Successful teams have a philosophy.

It's more likely that he will take the place of Fukadome. This is Fukadome's final year on his deal and it's HIGHLY unlikely he will be re-signed. But I like the way Lou seems to be approaching this. By not just giving Colvin RF and saying that he's gonna try to rotate the outfielders, he puts pressure on ALL of them to produce. Perhaps it will push them all to perform at a higher level. In any case, I'm glad he will be getting a chance to show if what he's done to date, is for real.

Fukudome's contract expires after the 2011 season (when he makes $13.5M).

I had thought that 2011 was a club option with a buyout, but I might be mistaken. Soriano has 4 more years after this season, so he is going nowhere. It will be nice when they play A.L. teams and can use him as a DH. If he had played a halfway decent 2B previously, it would be a nice option to move him back there. But he was horrible there too.

For 2011, the Cubs have the following on the books now:

Soriano 18M (still owe 72M for 2011-2014)
Zambrano 18M (owe ~36M for 2011 and 2012)
Aramis - player option for 14.6M
Fukudome - 13.5M
Dempster - 13.5M
Silva - 11.5M

You better hope Colvin can start eventually. Its nice for First Rd picks to do that every so often.

Im still waiting on Ty Griffin. That rookie card I've been holding for 20 years needs to gain some value.

I guess in 2012, they will have a great deal more flexibility, with Derek Lee gone and his 14 million dollar salary, along with Silva and Fukadome. I would have to think that Ramirez will exercise his option, as he's unlikely in this economy to get a better deal, even if he didn't have a achy shoulder. 13.5 Million for Fukadome....Hendry really overpaid. Kinda wish he had taken the BETTER deal the Sox offered him instead.
