Albert Snyder sued members of the Westboro Baptist Church (whom Fred Phelps supports) for attending Synder's Marine son's funeral (Michael Snyder, who was gay) and waiving signs bearing anti-gay slurs and shouting "God hates the USA".

Phelps supports this group of morons, who travel to military funerals to profess their hatred of homosexuality.

Snyder sued this group of protestors for $11 MILLION.

The 4th Circuit Court of Appeals then turned around and proclaimed that not only will the lawsuit be thrown out, but Snyder has to pay for all legal costs associated with the lawsuit, which totals $16,510.80.

So, who is the biggest douchebag?

Fred Phelps always wins. He is such a douchebag, he makes "The Brand" jealous.

But there really wasn't anyway to "get them" under the law. The lawsuit was frivilous. The only way to stop these people is to change the law, and that approaches really dangerous territory when you start discussing restricting speech.

Everyone knows these Westboro people are pricks, but you are not going to stop them under any current laws. Either they should be ignored and not covered in the media, so they hopefully stop doing this because of lack of exposure, or maybe people should start giving them a good old fashioned ass whoopin. I would vote for the latter.

Lawsuits like this (right or wrong) are usually more about hurting the other party rather than coming up with a reasonable figure. The whole "Pain & Suffering" thing seems very subjective. I'm not saying I agree with it (I really don't, in fact), but think about how you would feel if someone did something similar at the funeral of someone you loved...

I'm surprised no one has done anything criminal to these guys while they're in the act of being complete pricks.

I would feel absolutely horrible, if not enraged if that kind of thing happened at a funeral for my son. However, whenever I see "lawsuit" I immediately am reminded of how "sue-happy" we have become.

To declare, I voted for Phelps.

This is how I feel about these large sums of money that people seek in court. I would never do it, but I can't fault someone for trying in a case like this.
