I knew this day would eventually come. Because even as the 1981 classic starring Harry Hamlin and Laurence Olivier was my favorite childhood movie, the brilliant Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion animation effects haven't aged well.

So it was only a matter of time before some bright studio exec pitched the idea of a new Clash, replete with sparkling CGI effects and featuring an updated Kraken that looks like something that came out of the guy's chest in Alien. So I'm expecting a disaster, with the only redeeming qualities being Liam Neeson as Zeus and Ralph Fiennes as Hades (for what it's worth, though, the trailer is pretty cool).

Hopefully I'm wrong on the disaster part.

i think it looks badass but i think, like the original, it can't be taken so seriously. this is a movie about special effects. so was the original. i can guarantee you the characters will be extremely weak and thin. there is nothing that will resonate except the visuals.

so far they look pretty amazing to me.

The old one is damn near unwatchable these days and it was one of my fav flix growing up. This new one looks awesome! Poor choice of music for the trailer though

I liked the first one as a kid mostly because I always enjoyed old mythology. Now it's campy, hokey, and cheesy. But that's fine. I can appreciate that. Trailer for the new one looks mildly entertaining.

The only thing about the SFX is that now it is simply comparable to games and games-inspired movies.

The older, jerkier effects put the older film in a category of its own, and that's not a put-down. As a kid, I resonated better with those movies. E.g., the jerkiness became a visual shorthand for the creatures' power/speed.

Seeing as the trailer's been all over the place lately, I'm a little put off now. But I'll probably end up seeing it next weekend and pray it's not the waste of time Avatar was.

If you've been reading around movie sites and reviews, the consensus is to NOT see this in 3D. The movie wasn't shot with 3D in mind, and it was quickly transferred to 3D in 10 weeks, only after Avatar started raking in the dough. Reviews I've read indicate the 3D is very sloppy and distracts from the *obviously* awesome action.

Don't tell Darkside that. He'll want to fight you and then lecture you on why you should hate Daylight Savings Time.

The man knows.

Liam Neeson
Daylight Saving Time
Four US time zones
Comcast

I've got beefs with all of them.

The original 1981 movie with Harry Hamlin was actually on Turner Classic Movies, DIRECTV 256, the other night as part of a Ray Harryhausen triple feature that also included the 1963 cult classic "Jason and the Argonauts". I don't know if it was really necessary to remake a film that wasn't exactly cheap to make by the famous MGM lion. With Warner Bros. in on the "Clash" remake, I've got to think it has to make a lot of money just to break even...
