For the money, Brown isn't that great. I wouldn't mind seeing that 10 mil come back and make further upgrades. Idonije's a great guy to have as a backup or to give someone a blow for a few downs but I'd hate to see him on the end for 16. If they're moving Brown, I have to think this is firstly about money and second they aren't serious about starting Idonije. Can't be, can they?

I kinda feel like they don't really lose anything with swapping Brown for a Idonije/Anderson mix, and theoretically they could use the $5.5 mil next year on need areas. If they get a 2nd-4th round pick somehow, and sign some safety help, I think this will be viewed as a good move. Brown was a decent guy production wise and good against the run, good in the locker room, but the gamble is that Anderson and Idonoje might have more upside. Marinelli seems to like them.

I always thought Alex Brown was a good "football player". There's something to be said for being a "good football" player, no?
Perhaps, I am wrong. I guess we'll see.

It would be great if this plays out with the Bears exchanging Brown and a 3rd for a second and then signing Otogwe with Brown's money

or....

There is talk about the Bears sending Brown to the Panthers for the return of Chris Harris. Decent move especially if they then spend the savings on Otogwe. Imagine a defense renewed with two good safties and a defensive end.

Where is that being reported at (Brown for Harris)?

If they are cutting salary for a move for Atogwe, then that makes a ton of sense.

If not ... it doesn't make sense from a football perspective.

They are not getting Otogwe... from what I understand it would require some sort of poison pill contract that would be difficult to formulate. Rams simply tendered him to let another team set the market before they resign him.

oh no, I see a ten page thread forming on the horizon

Dolphin, why do you think that the Bears defense has been one of the most frequently blitzing teams in the NFL over the past couple of years? Because their defensive line sucks. Alex Brown has played a prominent role in that suckage. The problem, though, is that Mark Anderson or Israel Idonije will likely be worse than Brown.

This is probably what happened:

Low level guy on Chiefs or some other team: Hey, Mr. Newspaper, the Bears were talking to our office about trading Alex Brown.

Mr. Newspaper: ORLY?

Low level guy: Yes, they seem to be shopping him around.

Mr. Newspaper: What a scoop! If they're not able to trade him, I imagine they'll cut him loose.

As for Brown being good against the run, that's great, but it's a bit like a halfback that is a spectacular blocker. There's value in that, but you better have other skills. And I think that he is one of the worst starting DEs in the NFL at rushing the passer.

Turns out someone in the Bears front office DID confirm to Zaidman that he will be traded or released. Dumbasses.

I agree. He played the run well and was usually in the right place. I've never seen a guy be a half step late on as many sack as Brown either.

Once the report is out, there's no point in keeping it a secret. In fact, if they don't report it, then you'll get everyone clamoring for "WHY ARE YOU LYING TO US; THE MEDIA AND FANS HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW!?!?!", like with the Greg Olsen situation. There's no cost in reporting something that is now widely available news.

brown was the best de they had last year ,not wally, they had a bad pass rush last year ( with no def line help), sign a premiere de ( wait and see) have a weak secondary, let the better safetys sign with other teams in fa, then they are going to release or trade a player that will make their pass rush better with peppers, and let a special teams player take over the de position? if your ends can bring it doesnt that make your secondary that much better? dont forget lovies arrogance with personel, remember last year when the bears got their asses kicked by cinncy, balt, and arz. alex brown came out and said" i dont know why when we play good teams we always seem to get smoked" he was outspoken about the teams effort and questioned why they have a hard time versus quality teams .the bears are a team that tries to control the media and their players, letting brown go just doesnt make sense at this point

The puzzling moves continue at Halas Hall. The Bears release a DL who can actually play.
They should have released Tommie Harris.

If they did it to free up some money, I'm okay with it but still think it's shitty. If they do nothing then this was a bad move.

I think they are re-couping some of the dollars spent on Peppers/ Taylor / Manu.

I want to think they are going to go get a safety, OL, or WR so you are bringing me down.

This is the type of stuff that makes me not like this organization. Makes me mad.

Couldn't he be traded for any kind of draft pick? they had to be trying to get a draft bick for him given the needs at Safety.
If not, them he was overpriced, undertalented and should be let go.

Well announcing that he will be released if no trades materialize kinda hamstrings any leverage you might have. Brilliant.
