WGN-AM's David Kaplan is reporting DePaul has hired Clemson head coach Oliver Purnell and has agreed to a 7 year contract with him in excess of $15 million dollars including the the buyout of his Clemson contract.

He was on campus on Monday and and will be introduced in a press conference at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday on DePaul's campus.

Purnell has been the head coach at Clemson since 2003 and while he has done a decent job making Clemson competitive and has taken them to the NCAA Tournament 3 times, he is 0-6 in his career in NCAA games.

Depaul is gonna pay this guy $2.2 Million per year. He has never won a first round NCAA tournament game. This is a classic case of hiring the only guy who was interested in the job.
So much for Lavin or anyone who would have generated excitement for Depaul.
Like I said a few weeks ago...no one wants to work for the Woman with 3 names.

They ought to be thankful they got a guy who has coached before and taken a team to the tourney. This is not a very good job.

Right. Who the fuck are DePaul fans to complain about getting a coach that hasn't had success once reaching the tournament? Uh, hello? I know that if there are 96 teams that 13 or 14 will get in from the Big East, but you might still be three years away from qualifying. Just hope that he can get there, then worry about losing.

How do you go to 3 NCAA tournaments and have an 0-6 record?

You take Dayton and Old Dominion to the tourney before you coach at Clemson.

He's a really bad Tournament coach.

This is what I was thinking. Who leaves Clemson to go to DePaul?

If you can't hire the current Dayton coach, you might as well hire his predecessor at UD . . . I always say.

Clemson is a football school. Plus, you leave Clemson to get paid. He's going from 1.6 to 2.2M

He smells like a transitional coach to me. 56 years old, been coaching a long time. Hope he brings in some young assistants that will take over longer term.

Hasn't Clemson played a full court trapping style defense under Purnell?

I would think that it's not completely unrealistic to believe the Clemson AD let out a HUGE "whew" when this guy said he was leaving for DePaul.

I still would have paid Billy Gillispie half what you paid this guy, which is twice what he'll get elsewhere, and he'd build the program twice as quickly as Purnell with half the ethics.

You do the math.

And this should be the basis for question #1 at the press conference

Does this guy have any connection to Chicago? That's going to be the key for Depaul. If not, his first hire better be a guy who is undeniably Chicago, who can recruit here.

It may have been better to hire a coach who has his eye on a bigger program but elevates yours like many mid majors do. He may leave for a bigger school eventually(like Matta did at Xavier) but he helps build a program and an assistant can take over and still keep the train going.

I just wonder if this guy will treat Depaul as a nice retirement plan.

Stiff is being a bit rough....4 straight 20 win seasons in the ACC, 138-90 at Clemson. He's not a stiff by any stretch.

You are irrelevant. Now your crappy basketball will take the form of full court press, 83-69 type losses, rather than half court, 65-54 losses. Maybe one day in the distant future you'll make the tournament and lose in the first round. Get over it.

Not a glamor hire by any means, and the hiring process made the administration looking like a laughingstock. Tournament record aside, he has a chance to rebuild, Clemson had the 3rd best record in the ACC under Purnell behind only Duke and UNC. I wouldn't describe him as a stiff.

This is not a big name hire for Depaul, Purnell has turned Clemson into something, but no good in the tournament. I would be suprised if he lasts 7 years.

I am suprised they didn't try to make a run at Stevens.

Purnell was probably thinking if I don't do something special at Clemson next season, I am gone, so why not get out when I can.

Or I'm a couple of years to retirement so why not take the 8M for 4 years and be well off for the end of time.

0-6 in the NCAA tournament = stiff by any defnition.

He's obviously just going for the paycheck and has given up on any dreams he had of being a good basketball coach. No other explanation for a guy to leave an established program in the best conference in the country for a total rebuilding job. He saw the $$$, he knows he sucks as a coach, he figured that pretty soon the people at Clemson were gonna realize it, so why not cash in now and call it a day in regards to moving up the coaching ladder.

Oliver Purnell? You've got to be kidding me! If he's the answer, what's the question? Besides, what do you think The SCORE's Laurence Holmes is thinking right now upon today's hiring?

He's thinking he it will be a ratings bonanza when he tells callers they are racist for being negative about a black head coach.

I don't know, GD...Do you want to hear more cuts from Reggie Theus on "Hang Time" like he did the other night?
