Is Colvin the next Hoffpauir?

I like what we've seen of this game so far but let's get ahold of ourselves folks.

Actually this is exactly what Micah Hoffpauir was, an overhyped player that all the Cubbie Blue Kool Aid drinkers in Hooterville (Bob cracks me up) thought should have been played instead of a struggling veteran.

Hoffpauir was bad. When he did get extended playing time, he sucked. My problem with Cub fans in general is how you latch onto a guy who had a tremendous spring and thing he is the answer to all that ails you. I saw his first hit last night, and it was nice. I have no damn idea how old he is, and if he turns out to be better than the trio of crap they throw out there on a daily basis, because like it or not, the Cubs are going to suck this year. Unfortunately, the Trib saddled the new ownership with a bunch of bad contracts and it's going to take Shingles and his family some time to get out from under them. Colvin will not get enough playing time unless someone gets hurt. If Colvin gets a lot of time and turns out to be realy good, bully for him. Until then, he is Micah Hoffpauir with a decent glove.

Colvin is a first rd pick. Different expectations. Different situations. Different altogether.

Like I thought I said, I am not even sure I knew how old he was. I really hope he turns into a decent player. I can't remember the last time they had a player they developed turn out to be good. I think he is in an unfortunate situation economically speaking because Hendry is out to prove that he didn't screw up and overspend on bad contracts for the likes of Soriano and Fukodome. If baseball were a just universe, Colvin would be an everyday player because I think he earned it based on his spring.

But I stand firm on my belief that Hoffpauir sucks

Different ages and skill sets as well.

I think the number of observers who really thought Hoffpauir was superior to Lee is being greatly exaggerated. There's a distinction to be made between "get this guy some plate appearances" and "our baseball savior has arrived." Lee has been declining and prone to horrific slumps for which he needs to be spelled, but he was still good enough to largely retain his role, especially with his glove vis-a-vis the butchery of Hoffpauir. I don't like Derrek Lee's attitude and I'll be glad to see him go, but not if he's fully replaced by the likes of goddamn Micah Hoffpauir.

The difference between Lee v. Hoffpauir and Soriano v. Colvin is that while Lee just needed timely reductions in his playing time, there's an alarmingly significant chance that Soriano is utterly toast.

Yeah but to be fair, the outcry was last winter/ spring, when Hoff was belting balls all over the Cactus League, and Lee had posted a mediocre 2008.

Looking at it now, after Lee's bounceback year, and Hoffpauir being exposed it looks lot different in hindsight.

i still struggle to see where lee was declining that much. he had a pretty bad wrist injury that was getting in the way of his swing. he still hovered around .300 and had a high obp with 40+ doubles and 180 hits. his power numbers had just dipped. hes still very valuable to this team
