We all know the guy is now a mega bust of legendary proportions! Maybe the biggest bust in the history of....busts!

Hendry is taking a ton of shit for the length of the contract.

My peeps told me last year, that Hendry only offered 5 years to Soriano and someone (McDonough?) made a call after Hendry and asked what was needed to lock this up, and the 8 years was given without Hendry's knowledge.

Please don't get me wrong here, I am not an apologist for Hendry as I can rip him for plenty of other stuff, but from what I have heard, it wasn't him that gave Soriano the lifetime annuity, it was McDonough allegedly.

I have heard this from more than one source as well.

I never heard that...and I guess at this time it does not matter. Hendry has soo many bad contracts, I think he is the reason for all of them.

If this crap continues, I want to see if Lou has the balls to simply make soriano a part time / bench player. Right after that dropped fly ball (2nd one of the game) I was hoping that he was going to yank him in the middle of the inning ala Bobby Cox. But nooooo....we have to coddle the 18 million dollar FLOP!

Is ok if Cub fans boo him? Ohhh God forbid,

The mystery is why he was ever offered a contract.

The other mystery: the continued employment of Jim Hendry

They have a DH in a league without the DH.
They can move the STIFF to an A.L. team if they eat 80% of that salary.

McDonough is always accused of meddling and no one has ever confirmed it.

Because they lost a lot of games in 06. They had to make a splash and sign the biggest name player and manager.

Long term success and Prudence takes a back seat to Public Relations.

To be fair at the time I didnt hate that they signed him. Just too many years. It was all set up for 08 and they missed it, as per usual.

Fuckn HOOTERVILLE

The Cubs hands were tied that offseason. They simply HAD to go out and make a big splash in the free agent market. The signing itself was not bad at all. The length of the contract is. And even if the 8 year deal wasn't totally Hendry's doing, the no trade clause he handed out was, and thats what fucks Soriano's deal more than anything.

He'll waive that NTC when he sits for 3-4 months.

I dunno. I don't see Lou Hendry sitting him for that long, and I also think he is the type of guy that would be perfectly happy collecting paychecks and being a part time player.

If he's dropping popups and not making contact with pitches he'll sit. This year is a little different for Hendry, this is his "legacy year". Lou probably doesn't care about his last year with the Cubs but I know he doesn't want to lose because of this clown.

He's a quote from the biggest pussy on the Team:

Soriano wrote:
"But at the last moment, I take my eyes off the ball and just think about the wall. One second, I took my eyes off the ball, and I dropped it."

I took my eyes off the ball and just think about the wall. When I heard this, I know beyond a doubt that this man is DONE playing baseball. DONE. You cannot play in the outfield if you "take your eyes off the ball and think about the wall". HE WAS NO WHERE NEAR THE WALL WHEN HE DROPPED THAT BALL.

and...how does that play in the locker room and with his team? Especially the pitching staff? Who has the moxy on this team to call Soriano out? Afraid of the goddamn padded wall.

While Hendry may or may not have been the one that decided an 8 year contract was acceptable in length. He was the GM to sign Soriano to that contract. Carlos Lee was available that same offseason and he was the guy I thought was a much better fit. He would have taken a contract that would be expiring this season or next and although he started out as a poor outfielder, he became a decent outfielder by the time his contact with the Brewers expired. In any case, he's MUCH better than Soriano. Plus production-wise, Lee is better. About the same in HR production (perhaps slightly higher) and more RBI as well as a higher average and OBP. No, Hendry decided in the end that the 8 year deal was a good idea, even if someone else originally encouraged it. He gets the blame, because in the end he offered it up. Soriano WAS the big name, as he was coming off his 40/40 season. But I didn't want him then, I've ripped him consistently and I don't want him now. Hendry's worst move ever as a GM.

The boss did not MAKE the deal though. He encouraged Hendry to make the deal and do whatever it was going to take (according to BigFan's source). But in the end, it's Hendry's call as GM, whether to sign him at all, offer him a deal of reasonable length, or the deal he did in fact offer. He should have told McDonough, or whomever encouraged this deal, that such a contract would be foolish, as would signing a guy that is a defensive liability and gone out and signed Carlos Lee or someone else instead.

Early nomination for dumb post of the week. Soriano is bad, but Carlos Lee is not a defensive upgrade in LF.

who gives a shit what went on with the process and who did what. the important thing is hes signed that long for that much money and its not changing unless he decides to bring a gun to the locker room

He was once a defensive liability on a par with the Adam Dunn's and Alfonso Soriano's of the world, but that was many years ago. He became at least an average left fielder several years ago. He is definitely an upgrade over Soriano. Although that IS the quintessential tall midget award.

Ron Santo would be an upgrade over Soriano defensively.

He is an upgrade in that, Soriano, defensively, is like getting dry fucked with a 12 inch strapon and Lee is an 8 incher with a couple drops of lube.
Neither is pleasant, but you'll definitely have less pain with Lee.

Who will take that contract? I just don't see 1) The Cubs picking up 50-70M over 4-5 years and 2) Someone wanting an aging player who's production has dropped off over the last few seasons.

Now this may sound ridiculous, but...

.... trade D Lee at the deadline for prospects, try Soriano at first base? Basically, anyone over 6' can play first..... I mean, how bad could he be there? Consider that you only hurt the team by putting him anywhere else on the diamond...

Currently he's not hitting well enough to warrant playing anywhere.
Its not ridiculous if he starts hitting, but I can only imagine how bad he would be at 1b. He has trouble catching the ball. Catching the ball. :?

That might be something the Cubs have to try because they are saddled with Soriano. HOWEVER, if you put his lack of defense aside, you still have to question whether or not this guy will even hit again? He has developed into a consistently bad & unreliable hitter. Combined with bad defense...his role could be that of bench warmer.

Two Words: Mo Vaughn

Although I would love seeing Soriano fall down the dugout steps.

True, he has terrible instincts as an outfielder. First base though may be more of a "reaction" position where he has to know when to stretch, and react to short hopped throws. This guy was a shortstop at one time so he may have some infielder instincts. I'm not saying it's a great or even good idea, but you have to get something out of him, and first may be a hole that needs to be addressed next year. Put him over there, maybe he get's his head in the game and starts hitting, who knows.

I would think that the idea might be worth investigating. Of course Ramirez might go from a solid 3rd baseman to a below average one as a result of the move. But he would be likely to hurt the team less at 1st base. But if Soriano doesn't hit enough prior to the trade deadline, it probably doesnt warrant investigation.

Bt the way...whatever has happened to MOFO (Man of few Opinions) ? He was always eager to defend Soriano in years past, when I would complain about Soriano's many faults??? I have not noticed a post from him for a while.

You might have to Move Ramirez to first eventually. But the thing is, Soriano is afraid of walls, now he has to catch the ball with Kung Fu Panda barrelling down on him?

I think it would be literally, a comedy of errors.
