He should have told McDonough, or whomever encouraged this deal, that such a contract would be foolish, as would signing a guy that is a defensive liability and gone out and signed Carlos Lee or someone else instead.

Actually Steve, the boss did make the deal. He made the call to the agent and I have enough backing on this one to think it is true.

From what I was told Hendry did not know the terms of the deal until the next day.

Lets say for the sake of argument that what you have been told is accurate. If Hendry's boss DID call the agent and determine the parameters involved in the deal and present them to Hendry, Jim Hendry STILL had the option of telling him that upon examination of those parameters, he finds the deal unacceptable. That he feels the deal involves too many years and would rather pursue other options. I am not as willing as you seem to be, to let Hendry off the hook. In the end he is still the GM and could have decided not to sign off on the deal. I understand why he did-he probably overlooked Soriano's failings and focused on a guy coming off a 40/4o season and thought "what the hell, the deals too long, but if we win a championship, who cares?" But it didn't happen and now all those failings are highlighted, without a championship. I was against his signing and have been critical of him all along. So I do not feel a bit bad about being critical about this now. That said, I'm sure there will be streaks this season where Soriano gets on a real nice tear and carries the club. People will once again be glad to have him-for a while. But his was a bad signing and Hendry had to know when the deal was struck, that it was a foolish contract. What do you think this guy will be like 4 years from now, when they are STILL paying him big coin??

Hey Boss, that deal you made sucks, cancel it.

As I said in my post, if he told the boss that he thinks that the deal would be a bad one because of the length of the contract and would RATHER pursue other options...I doubt that would cause his dismissal.

Ok. Maybe McDonaugh said "Well, you lost too many games last year, we need to make a splash. Were making the deal"

For all we know Hendry did express concern.

Early nomination for dumb post of the week. Soriano is bad, but Carlos Lee is not a defensive upgrade in LF.

He was once a defensive liability on a par with the Adam Dunn's and Alfonso Soriano's of the world, but that was many years ago. He became at least an average left fielder several years ago. He is definitely an upgrade over Soriano. Although that IS the quintessential tall midget award.

Steve, you are just talking out of your ass. Here are Soriano's UZRs for the three years he has been a Cub:

2007 19.5
2008 2.7
2009 -10.8

Here are Carlos Lee's UZRs for the same years

2007 -5.4
2008 -4.4
2009 -5.5

Over the three years Soriano has been a better fielder, and in two out of the three years he was a better fielder. Stick to defending your crappy "brand" on Mac's show.

Carlos Lee will never compete for a gold glove, but anyone with a decent pair of eyes can see that he's a better outfielder than Soriano. Fonzie may well be the worst outfielder in the major leagues. You can quote Bernsteins bullshit UZR ratings all you want...those numbers are helped greatly by the fact that Soriano USED to get a fair number of outfield assists. He USED to...no longer is that the case and he continues to screw up in the outfield. Played a double into a triple and got an error on another double that turned into three bases on account of his error. When the manager has to remove a guy from games regularly as a result of that players defensive play, it tells you all you need to know. Thank God he was removed, as Tyler Colvin helped contribute a nice sac bunt as well as a walk and made all the plays required after the switch was made. The -10.8 in 2009 reflects more accurately as to what kind of fielder Soriano is now. In fact, his rating for this season thus far, is probably worse.

The thing is the trending. Soriano was a better fielder in 07, 08, than he was in 09 and 10. Each year he gets worse. At least Lee is consistantly bad, Soriano HAS the skills, he just fucked them up.

If you look at the offensive numbers, the defensive numbers, the amount of money paid to each player per year AND the length of each contract, there is NO DOUBT, that Carlos Lee, would have been the smarter signing.

The "other trend"-the offensive trends for Soriano, are equally disturbing.
