Cmon Nas, you're better and smarter than to merely recite the Blue party play book. I hope you will find it liberating when some day you can view economics and politics with non-partisan glasses. The recent history of the American economy is that most everyone with educations or skills have benefitted despite the political meddling of both parties. Yes, some people without educations and skills did not see as much income growth in the 80s as those with educations...but that didn't change much in the 90s or 00s either, regardless of the party in power in the White House or Congress.

Nas: I think I'm a little older than you. Part of why I love Reagan as much as I do is because I remember the dreadful Carter years.

And by the way, I like Democrats also. As long as they are named Joe Lieberman.

Oh no. I'm having a relapse. It took years of therapy to forget how Jimmy's misguided economics of "discipline" almost destroyed what little was left of our economy after Ford's brilliantly conceived "Whip Inflation Now" campaign and Nixon's price controls took it to the brink.

Lieberman? He lost the primary to Lamont but he has a 10 point lead on him as an Independent and will easily win the seat.

Oz, if I remember correctly it was against the law for them to strike. So Reagan fired them and life went on. Sometimes we make bad choices, like MLB umpires.

Yeah, Oz, actually I did...and they were POd that their union leaders led them down a stupid path of political posturing that cost them their jobs unless they made the very painful choice to cross picket lines.

But that's beside the point here. Don't confuse people who lost jobs in a union squabble with broadscale economic recovery from the worst economic period since the 30s. What happened in turning the economy around in the 80s from where it was under Carter was pretty remarkable...until Clinton did even better in the 90s.

To be exact, it was 11,359. This Union did stage an illegal strike. In 1955, Congress had enacted a law making such a strike by Federal employees a crime punishable by 1 year in prison. They also planned their illegal act for August, 1981, during the airlines' busiest time of the year. Major carriers like Eastern, American and TWA were reporting losses of 30 million dollars a day.

Fortunately, the FAA's contingency plan sent them packing permanently. Believe me, I pity the holders of stock in these airlines far more than I do the controllers. Reagan gave them ample opportunity to come back, and they made a fatal error by not heeding his warnings.
