Nowitzki made comments that he's considering opting out and leaving Dallas. Consider that if he jumps to the Eastern Conference and his team is a top 3 seed, that pretty much translates to a first round bye.

Whereas in the Western Conference, being a 2 seed results in Dallas having to take on Duncan, Parker and Ginobli's Spurs in the 1st round.

Chris Bosh? Even playing in the weak Eastern Conference, Bosh hasn't won a playoff series in his 7 seasons in the NBA.

Bosh = the Jay Cutler of this free agent class.

I think all of these top free agents have player options for next season. The looming NBA lockout + CBA renegotiation means they want to forgo that option and secure long term deals under the current CBA (as everyone seems to assume the next CBA will be less favorable to the players).

Maybe the better question is why Dirk would NOT opt out and get a new contract--even if he stays in Dallas and makes the Mavs cuts him a new deal, 4 or 5 years @ $17 million a year is better than a season or even 2 seasons @ his current salary.

His game lends itself to longevity. He's playing as well as he ever has right now. If he was smart, he would sign with the Thunder. That would be the perfect team for him I think.

Father time catches up with everyone. He is already having back problems. He doesn't seem like the type of guy that does a lot of work to stay in shape either. Right now the thunder doesn't have enough cap space to sign a full boat guy.

Yeah Dirk on the Thunder would be scary good. I have always like Dirk, and I hope he gets in a situation where he can win a title. Obviously, I would love to have him on the Bulls, but I don't see that happening.

That's why I said he doesn't seem like that type of guy. Tim Duncan is 34 too and has played 63 more playoff games and a total of 120 games even though Dirk came into the league a year after Duncan. Besides they don't have the cap room and long term it would prevent them from signing their young guys. That is unless you believe OKC is a big enough market where they can exceed the luxury tax. Durant and Green will be up for a contract after next season and Westbrook will get a new one the year after that. At least 2 of the 3 will be max deals.

Even rich guys don't like to lose money. They would have to be bringing money in like LA or NY to consider it. OKC is too small of a market. Being a new owner he still has to take care of his investors.

That's not true. He might not want to be perennially over the tax, but it wouldnt be hard for him to go over to win a title, and they'll have plenty of chances to do that and they'll be good enough where they wont lose money. LA and NY are far from the only teams going over the cap.

maybe if this wasn't such a massive FA year I could possibly see it, but no way any team is going to offer him more than that this year. it would be a insane risk to opt out of that deal for not a very big reward.
