A letter from Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts

Dear Friends,

You've probably been hearing about the Toyota sign we've proposed for the back of the left field bleachers at Wrigley Field. As fans and neighbors, we want you to know why this is important to the team and how it can help preserve the Friendly Confines.

As you know, Major League ballparks have historically relied on in-park signage to generate revenue. Legendary Fenway Park, older than Wrigley Field, has added significant signage throughout its outfield - and two World Series championships - in the last six years. Most other MLB teams also receive substantial public subsidies; we do not. In our case, we have asked for one sign in the outfield.

When we became owners, my family and I anticipated the need to spend tens, if not hundreds, of millions of dollars over the years ahead to preserve Wrigley Field. This past off-season, before we saw a single game as owners, we invested $10 million to shore up the infrastructure of the aging ballpark, renovate and expand its bathrooms, preserve our beloved scoreboard and replace some of the less attractive features of the park, like the concrete panels on the Addison street façade. As long-time Cubs fans, we know Wrigley Field is a special place and our hope is for future generations to share the wonderful experience of visiting the Friendly Confines.

In addition to the dollars invested in the park, we have maintained one of the highest payrolls in baseball and increased our budget for scouting and development - the key to future success. Winning a championship requires significant financial resources and we are currently reinvesting all profits - from the Toyota sign and otherwise - to make this happen.

Beyond the economics, there is an important principle at stake here. Wrigley Field has thrived for years as a privately-owned facility, albeit one where public interest is keen. We believe the park continues to be well-served by this principle which has guided its operation for nearly a century.

We have also been very respectful of the City's landmark designation and the process we have undertaken to win approval has been thorough. We've worked with the City and made adjustments, including modifying the location and design of the sign at the request of preservationists and City zoning officials. We've also worked with the rooftop businesses and in fact chose the proposed location because it least impacts those rooftop partners with whom we have long-term agreements. The landmark designation was never intended to put Wrigley Field in a time capsule. It's intended to allow flexibility and growth, within reason, to help the ballpark stay alive for the decades to come.

Finally, much of the opposition is rooted in commercial interests of one particular building and is designed to protect advertising currently on a rooftop across the street from Wrigley Field. Protecting the interests of one rooftop advertisement does not help preserve Wrigley Field or put together a championship team.

We would welcome your help and support for this sign. If you would like to lend your voice in support, please e-mail us at cubsfanfeedback@cubs.com.

I hope this information is helpful. Efforts like this are important as we continue to invest in our team and our 96-year-old ballpark. Improvements to Wrigley Field and modest changes throughout the years have kept the Friendly Confines alive while other stadiums have come and gone. Working together as we have allows us to remain viable and continue to flourish.

Thank you again for your help. And Go Cubs!

Sincerely,

Tom Ricketts
Chairman

False causality.

This isn't an achievement; you have no choice. The Cubs maintain their high payroll because the numerous no-trade contracts and backloaded deals make it impossible to relieve yourself of the bad money that composes that high payroll.

Not required: 2003 Florida Marlins say hello. If anything's required, it's a deep and consistently useful farm system.

Ricketts now sees what the rest of us deal with when trying to get city approval for anything from a deck to a building permit. Basically NOBODY in City Hall wants to say YES to anything, until they are told to by someone else.

They are professional CYA'ers.

Surprised he didn't get some of the movers to get his shit done quickly and quietly. This ain't Wilmette or Omaha.

An issue I do have with Ricketts telling me how much he put into Wrigley, is that it is about $4 million more than the annual budget of improvements and doing this after the season starts makes me question what the hell they have been doing since October when they closed? Don't need that much time to improve the bathrooms. And to be honest, bathrooms still suck.

Regardless of this particular topic....It is nice to have someone out in front of this team. I like his approach. It appears to be professional and thought out. Hopefully he learns how to play the game (chicago politics) a little better. Maybe he needs to look at the other MLB owner in town to see how he greases his wheels.

Gotta buy new grease! Assuming Tunney has been taken care of. Wagspack and Schulter got a taste and nobody else. Thus not enough votes for city council approvals.

This guy is a silver spoon just like mikey mccaskey. what has this ass-clown done besides take over a multi-million dollar business that his DADDY built up. fuck TR and his whole mooching family. He knew the state of the park when he bought the team, so don't fucking whine about putting money into the ballpark you weasly prick. He also knew wrigley was granted landmark status. Go ahead and threaten to move little tommy, you won't draw flies in addison or hoffman estates after the first couple years of the new ballpark wear off. Ticket prices will go up 10% every fucking year until attendence figures drop and i won't pay one nickel to enter wrigley and i am a cubs fan. I would love to see attendence drop down to about 10-15K/game and then watch the silver spoon shit his pants when they can't make their debt payments.

There it is. Funny that you compare TR to MM, because I thought the same thing when I first heard TR speak as he sounds like MM. He knew the rules & the situation that he was getting into.
I want him to focus on the team, not the ball park.

He's been a very successful businessman in Chicago for 2 decades at Mesirow, ABN, and with his own investment firm for the past 10 years.

I'll never cease to be amazed at the capacity of fans to get angry at owners for failures of the team. I mean, I guess it makes sense in baseball, with a theoretically limitless money supply, but even there it tends to degenerate into "he's not a real fan he's just a rich guy" tropes.

I'll never understand this. It's not the job of the president or owner to focus on "the team". He pays professionals to do that who have been around the game their entire lives. It is the owner's job to cut checks and make money so that he can cut bigger checks in the future, and occasionally fire or hire some of those professionals. That's it. The history of owners focusing on "the team" to the point of meddling in management affairs is one of unmitigated disaster.

I am not blaming him for the failure of the team. he knew what he was getting when he bought the team. and now he wants to use the public to help him pay for improvements to the ballpark. he is trying to extort mesa arizona into paying for the cubs new spring training complex and got shot down. I fully understand that it is his right to do all of this. I am just calling him out on it. if you don't agree thats fine. I could care less about the sign going up at wrigley field. Ricketts wants to be in front of the camera instead of fielding a winning baseball team IMHO.

You were clearly stating that he was "silver spoon just like mikey mccaskey" and that he had never done anything in his life.

But, in fact, he has done well on his own. In that respect, and most other respects, he's nothing like Mike McCaskey.

Please describe "well on his own". He started out with nothing and turned it into something? Anything else & he is just another guy in the Lucky Sperm Club.

He didn't start out with a bucket collecting change to buy clothes. So, I guess I can't say he started out with nothing.

But, he used the education he was provided with to then work at the CBOE I believe, went back to school to get his MBA, work the rounds at some investment banks and start his own firm.

He didn't just tuck into an empty suit and office at Ameritrade and wait around for inheritance.

Ok,Doc....He sounds like a smart man. Most of these rich offspring remind me of that old Steve Martin joke. "How to make a million dollars. First, get a million dollars."
